Illegal immigrants in prison costing state millions of dollars June 19th, 2008 @ 12:37pm Becky Bruce reporting The state of Utah is spending nearly $8 million a year to keep 300 illegal immigrants in prison, but the numbers don't tell the whole story. Angie Welling, spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Corrections, says, " While it sounds like a lot of money, and certainly $8 million is a lot of money, in the overall scheme of things it's not as big as it may seem at first glance." The Utah Department of Corrections only got back about $550,000 from the federal government for locking up undocumented workers last year. But spokeswoman Angie Welling says it's only about 5 percent of the total inmate population, and the state prison treats them equally. She says, "They do their time. If ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has placed a detainer on that person, they're deported once they've finished serving their time here in the state." Funding from the feds used to be much greater -- topping out at more than $2 million before 2001. Welling can't say for sure what changed, but she says one thing hasn't. "We will do what we need ...

Jacksonville business owner pleads guilty to harboring illegal aliens Wednesday, 30 July 2008 Faces up to 10 years imprisonment Jacksonville, Florida - A 37-year-old man pleaded guilty today to one count of harboring illegal aliens after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigation. Ruben Tinoco-Tinoco, of Jacksonville, Fla., was indicted on Mar. 13, 2008 by a federal grand jury following the arrests of 34 illegal aliens at various residences in Jacksonville. According to the plea agreement, 29 of those aliens said they worked for Tinoco-Tinoco at Taurus Painting, Inc. The ICE investigation revealed that the utilities of numerous houses and apartments owned by Tinoco were kept in his name. The investigation further revealed that during the period of Feb. 2007 through Mar. 2008 numerous Hispanic males were picked up at those residences and driven away in motor vehicles owned by either Mr. Tinoco or his business. "The recruitment, harboring and transportation of illegal aliens are very serious crimes that we will simply not tolerate" said Robert Weber, special agent-in-charge of the ICE Office of Investigations in Tampa. "My office devotes significant resources to identify, prosecute and incarcerate these criminals and is determined to continue identifying and shutting down vulnerabilities ...

SPP DONE DEAL??

North American leaders defend anti-worker trade policies Author: Emile Schepers Last month’s summit in New Orleans brought together President Bush, Mexican President Felipe Calderon, and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, all right wingers, for the fourth meeting of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of the Americas (SPP), which is a tri-national grouping designed to coordinate strategy to create a corporate friendly atmosphere. The key power grouping within the SPP is the North American Competitiveness Council composed of 35 representatives of New York Life, Ford, General Motors, Merck, General Electric, Chevron, Wal-Mart, Lockheed-Martin, Gillette, Whirlpool, Home Depot, Scotiabank, Mexicana Airlines, Kimberley-Clark of Mexico, and other US, Canadian and Mexican big business interests. Labor, environmentalist and other non-business sectors are completely locked out of SPP. Nor is the SPP accountable to the legislative bodies of the participating countries. Bush administration comments suggest that the goal is now to “institutionalize” the SPP so that whoever wins in November will have trouble changing it. But all three governments find themselves on the defensive, because of opposition to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). While NAFTA is not the same as the SPP, the latter is seen by ...

DPS: Officer assaulted by illegal immigrant TOMBSTONE — A Department of Public Safety officer was assaulted by an illegal immigrant following a traffic stop Thursday, the agency said Friday. The vehicle, which had been pulled over for unsafe lane use, stopped and then sped away as the officer approached the vehicle, stopping in a dirt pullout, according to the DPS. The driver, also an illegal immigrant, tried to run, then the officer tried to restrain him, at which time the officer was attacked by a passenger who attempted to choke him. After the officer broke free, the men fled. Six other illegal immigrants were in the vehicle and held at gunpoint by the officer until help arrived. The two men who fled were arrested by Border Patrol agents at about 11:20 p.m. Thursday. The officer was not hurt. Eliaquim Lopez, 21, of Mexico, was booked into the Cochise County Jail, charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and hindering prosecution. Jesus Tapia of Mexico was arrested on charges of unlawful flight from a police officer and escape.

Another illegal immigrant offender flees Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer Wednesday, July 23, 2008 (07-22) 22:28 PDT San Francisco -- The last illegal immigrant juvenile offender who had been in a $7,000-a-month group home as part of San Francisco's now-abandoned effort to shield young immigrants from deportation has bolted, authorities said Tuesday. The youth walked away from the unlocked center in Atascadero (San Luis Obispo County) on Monday, bringing to 12 the number of illegal immigrant offenders in the past month who have fled from youth homes hundreds of miles from the city. Ten of the 12, all of them from Honduras and all detained for dealing drugs, are still at large, including the youth who disappeared early Monday. The juveniles were among the offenders San Francisco juvenile probation officials had decided not to refer to federal authorities for possible deportation proceedings. The city flew several such youths to their native countries without telling the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, and when federal officials objected to the flights, city officials started sending the offenders to group homes outside San Francisco. City taxpayers picked up the $7,000 monthly tab for each juvenile. Mayor Gavin Newsom renounced the flights and the ...

Locals cross border in search of cheaper gas By Jonathon Shacat Herald/Review Published on Saturday, June 14, 2008 NACO, Sonora — Erika Saavedra handed $30 to Francisco Moreno and he filled the gas tank of her Chevrolet car with more than 10 gallons of gas. The exchange, which took place on Friday, seemed like a dream in this age of $4-per-gallon gas prices. But it was for real. Saavedra, who lives in Naco, Ariz., and works in Bisbee, said she started crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to buy gas in Naco, Sonora, a couple weeks ago. “I come here for different purposes. Like, right now, my main reason was to get gas. I’m on empty and I wasn’t going to pay $4 a gallon,” she said. Moreno, who pumps gas at the PEMEX station in Naco, Sonora, said Saavedra is one of many Americans who regularly come to Mexico to purchase gas. Regular gas at the PEMEX station in Naco, Sonora, is about $1 cheaper per gallon than in Bisbee. At the PEMEX on Friday, magna gas, which is 87 octane, cost 7.53 pesos per liter, or about $2.87 per gallon. The price for premium gas, which is 91 octane, was ...
