The High Price of Illegal Immigrant Crime As the Illegal Immigration issue has taken a back-burner in this years Presidential election, the effects of open borders and a broken immigration system still linger on the American people. Just the other day, Tony Bologna and his two sons were shot to death after their car came close to another car driven by illegal alien felon Edwin Ramos. Ramos, 21, an illegal alien from El Salvador, simply pulled out his gun and killed these men in cold blood. Just last March, San Francisco police arrested Ramos on a gun charge and already had two other felony convictions before that. However, due to San Francisco’s “sanctuary city” policy, the city officials did not alert Homeland Security about Ramos. According to San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, “We are standing up to say to all of our residents, we don’t care what your status is in terms of legal certification.” Since the shooting, Newsom has rescinded part of the sanctuary policy, but it is far too late for the Bologna family. Sixty-four assistant U.S. Attorneys and 35 support Staff will be hired to expand the prosecution of human traffickers, drug and gun smugglers, violent criminals and money launderers. This increase shows that border security is a top priority for the DOJ and these new sources will allow for better border security. The investments in the U.S. attorney offices are great but the current influx of illegal aliens will continue as long as the borders are open. The Federal government needs to take their constitutional responsibility and secure our borders by building the fence. Once the fence is built, the amount of illegal aliens will decrease and money can be spend on real immigration reform. Wait a second, didn’t the U.S. Chamber of Commerce just issue a report saying that the DHS plan to crack down on employers hiring illegal aliens would be bad for the economy? See article here. As unemployment rates increase across the United States, Oklahoma is experiencing a dramatic reduction in unemployment. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that unemployment in Oklahoma had fallen to 3.1 % in March, down 4% from March last year. Meanwhile, nationwide unemployment us up to 5.1%, up from 4.4% last year. This decrease is attributed to the passage of Oklahoma House Bill 1804 , the Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2007. The US Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation and apparently it is one of illegal alien’s devoted advocates. A recent article out of Capital Hill, Study: Illegal Worker Crackdown Would Cost Employers $1B reveals that the US Chamber of Commerce’s recent study claims that the government’s plan to crack down on illegal workers could cost employers more than $1 billion a year and legal workers billions in lost wages. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed a “no-match” rule that would require employers to fire workers who can’t resolve mismatches between their name and social security number. The U.S. Chamber opposes this plan because of their contention that it costs too much. The Chamber makes the argument that no-match social security numbers do occur with illegal aliens, but they are just as likely to occur due to typos, misspellings and name changes. The border fence (wall) in Yuma, Arizona works. Just imagine that you are an illegal alien running towards the border and then you come across a huge triple-layered fence. First, you would have to scale a 20 foot high steel fence reinforced by cement-filled steel piping. A recent Wall Street Journal Article, Crossings By Migrants Slow as Job Picture Dims , states that the number of illegal aliens apprehended along the U.S. - Mexico border is falling steeply. This steep decline is an indication that the economic downturn, combined with the beefed-up security is a formidable deterrent for unauthorized crossings. According to the U.S. Border Patrol there is no way to measure the number of people who try to sneak into the U.S. from Mexico each year. However, federal officials still consider border arrests a key indicator of how many people are attempting to cross the border. The U.S. Border Patrol estimates that the number of apprehensions dropped 17% between October 1, 2007 and March 31st, 2008 when compared to that same time span in 2006 to 2007.
