The number of valid signatures required is equal to one percent of the total votes cast in the most recent governor's race. That typically equates to 40-50 thousand signatures. The actual signing of petitions cannot begin until after the primary elections and no one who votes in those events may sign a petition of an alternate party. When you vote in a primary election you become a member of that party for the duration of the election year and cannot officially participate in the activities of any other party.
