Thompson out, but some backers not abandoning ship http://timesfreepress.com/news/2008/j... target="_blank"> Chattanooga Times Free Press ^ | January 26, 2008 | Andy Sher http://timesfreepress.com/news/2008/jan/26/first-person-thompson-out-some-backers-not-abandon/ NASHVILLE — Republican Fred Thompson is out of the presidential race, but that isn’t stopping some top Republican officials from continuing to support the former U.S. senator in the Feb. 5 GOP primary. Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, is running as an at-large delegate for Mr. Thompson. Senate Republican Leader Mark Norris, R-Collierville, is running as a Thompson delegate in the 7th Congressional District. And both are hoping to get to the Republican National Convention this summer as delegates. During a press availability with reporters this week, Lt. Gov. Ramsey told reporters he has been getting calls from various GOP campaigns seeking his support since Mr. Thompson’s flagging campaign officially fizzled. “Obviously, Chip Saltsman, who’s with Mike Huckabee, called about 30 minutes after Fred was out, and I asked him what took so long,” Lt. Gov. Ramsey joked of Mr. Saltsman, a former Tennessee Republican Party chairman who is Mr. Huckabee’s campaign manager. “Yesterday,” Lt. Gov. Ramsey continued, “I got a phone call that came up, unknown number, blocked caller ID. And usually I don’t answer that ...

Video: Mike Huckabee, Stop the Push Polls » The Constitution is Not a “Living, Breathing Document” Posted on January 18th, 2008 By Fred in Law , Judges This morning I heard that one of the other candidates commented that the Constitution is a “living, breathing document.” Frankly, I assumed this came from Senator Clinton or Senator Obama. It is identical to what Al Gore said when he was running for President in 2000, when he said he would look for judges “who understand that our Constitution is a living, breathing document, that it was intended by our founders to be interpreted in the light of the constantly evolving experience of the American people.” Imagine my surprise when I learned that this statement actually came from my opponent, Governor Huckabee, in an interview with CNN this morning. Now I know Governor Huckabee was talking about amending the Constitution, but I don’t think he understood that he was using code words that support judicial activism. He does not appear to understand that reliance on the notion that the Constitution is a living, breathing document is precisely the kind of wrong-headed thinking about the Constitution that gave us Roe v. Wade , which ...

Muslim newspaper endorses Ron Paul in Michigan The Muslim Observer endorsed Congressman Ron Paul in the Michigan Republican primary. The Muslim Observer, a newspaper based in Michigan, came down on the side of the presidential candidacy of Republican Congressman Ron Paul of Texas. "The Muslim community in Michigan has a unique opportunity to beat the pundits by voting as a block for Ron Paul as the Republican candidate". The newspaper added "Ron Paul meets the Muslim community's major concern about War in Iraq - an issue that every media outlet has ignored in the primary political campaign in Michigan. To the Muslim community, it is the source of major problems in America - security, jobs, education, healthcare, etc.; and the world peace. The Republican candidate who voted NO against War in Iraq, is against the Patriot Act and is in favor of bringing the troops back home - deserves our full support in the Michigan Primary". The Democratic primary in Michigan allows voters to choose only Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, while the Republican primary allows voters to choose from a variety of candidates, including Congressman Paul, Governor Mitt Romney, Governor Mike Huckabee, and Senator John McCain. The Muslim Observer opined ...

I guess this is as close to an endorsement as anybody will ever get from Rush. Some of the transcript: THOMPSON: Governor Huckabee’s campaign manager said it accurately in terms of what they believe. They believe that it is over. This is a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party and its future. On the one hand, you have a Reagan revolution; you have the Reagan coalition of limited government, and strong national security. On the other hand, you have the direction that Governor Huckabee would take us in. He would be a Christian leader, but he would also bring about liberal economic policies, liberal foreign policies. RUSH: And, you know, now, this was unique. This has not happened to date in Republican debates with a Republican calling another Republican a liberal. And this is why Fred was considered to be on fire. He continued. THOMPSON: He believes we have an arrogant foreign policy in the tradition of blame-America first. He believes that Guantanamo should be closed down and those enemy combatants brought here to the United States to find their way into the court system eventually. He believes in taxpayer funded programs for illegals, as he ...

HUMAN EVENTS Endorses Fred Thompson by Human Events (more by this author) Posted 01/11/2008 ET The 2008 presidential election is the most unusual and most important in many years. It’s been more than five decades since such a race didn’t feature an incumbent President or Vice President. Since World War II, America has not had a presidential election at a time when the stakes were higher. Conservatives have to win this election, and to do so, we have to identify a candidate around whom we all can rally. Fundamental Beliefs We begin by recalling the profound words of Ronald Reagan at the Conservative Political Action Conference Feb. 15, 1975: “A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency or simply to swell its numbers.” We believed that then, and we believe it now. The issue for us -- and for the conservative community -- boils down to which of the candidates is most representative of the fundamental conservative principles we believe in. The answer is Fred Thompson. To reach that conclusion, we looked closely at the former Tennessee senator and his opponents to judge whether ...

Paul Won't Rule Out Run as Independent Ron Paul, the Texas congressman stirring up the Republican presidential contest with his libertarian-leaning views and online fundraising prowess, left the door open Sunday to running as an independent, should he not win the Republican nomination. Paul, who has railed against excessive federal spending, also defended his own earmarks to benefit his congressional district into spending bills, likening them to a "tax credit" for his constituents. He added that his position was consistent because he ultimately voted against the spending measures. And he decried the Civil War, calling it a needless effort for which hundreds of thousands of Americans paid with their lives. He rejected that the war spelled the end to slavery in the United States, saying that the U.S. government could have simply bought the slaves from the Confederate States of America and freed them. During a one-on-one interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," host Tim Russert challenged Paul particularly hard on the earmarks, saying that the congressman inserted them because he knew the bills would pass even with Paul voting no. "When you stop taking earmarks or putting earmarks in ... the spending bills, then I think you'll be consistent," ...

Some - well more like all of two readers have gotten a little cross-eyed over the fact that I dared to imply that George Soros/MoveOn forces were working covertly to assist the most Soros-like candidate on the GOP ticket. The truth is some of the support has been covert, some of it rather obvious... For instance one MoveOn group assisted in the funding and production of this television ad: The MoveOn covert ops have also been infiltrating Ron Paul groups for meet-ups, sometimes not meeting with the most cordial of greetings once discovered. To see for yourself check the MoveOn.org meet-up site that lists the MoveOn events not to be missed... the next meeting in Michigan for example is December 31st. The truth is Ron Paul's denial of the Global War against Islamo-fascist Terrorists runs in concert with Soros' "Hate America First" brigades.
The amero conspiracy Behind closed doors, a secret cabal is planning the end of the United States as we know it. Inside a paranoid vision for our time. (Tim Lane for The Boston Globe) By Drake Bennett November 25, 2007 SINCE HE BEGAN his presidential campaign, Republican candidate Mitt Romney has held more than 125 "Ask Mitt Anything" town hall forums, and the people who have shown up for them have done their best to make the events live up to their name. There have been questions about medical marijuana, about abolishing the income tax, about Romney's Mormonism and his potential vice president. more stories like this Of course, certain topics come up more than others. One is healthcare. Another is Iraq. A third is the North American Union. The North American Union is a supranational organization, modeled on the European Union, that will soon fuse Canada, the United States, and Mexico into a single economic and political unit. The details are still being worked out by the countries' leaders, but the NAU's central governing body will have the power to nullify the laws of its member states. Goods and people will flow among the three countries unimpeded, aided by ...

Tancredo: Tough Immigration Reform Essential to Maintain U.S. Identity http://www.cfr.org/publication/11141/ Interviewee: Tom Tancredo Interviewer: Robert McMahon , Deputy Editor July 24, 2006 The U.S. Congress remains sharply divided over immigration reform. The House of Representatives has passed a bill emphasizing tougher enforcement measures, including a stronger border security presence and penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants. The Senate has passed a bill , favored by President Bush, that also seeks to tighten security on the U.S.-Mexican border but includes provisions that would lead to citizenship for many of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States. One of the strongest voices in Congress for an enforcement-only approach is Congressman Thomas Tancredo , a four-term Colorado Republican who chairs the 104-member House Immigration Reform Caucus. He frames the issue both in terms of the letter of the law and as an imperative to preserve the country’s identity. He believes there is momentum for the House bill, as evidenced by increasing measures by states to crack down on illegal immigration. And he regards the latest changes to the country’s changing ethnic composition as a threat to national unity while the country seeks to wage a war on what he ...

Thompson says it's about strength By STEPHEN BEALE Union Leader Correspondent 6 hours, 8 minutes ago http://tinyurl.com/255c98 Bedford – Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson yesterday said America should not be a global policeman, but it must remain the world's leader. Thompson, a former actor and U.S. senator from Tennessee, said America is facing a global war on terror that transcends the ongoing conflict in Iraq. He said the country must have a foreign policy based on prevention as well as deterrence. He warned that Iran was well on its way toward having nuclear weapons. "Nobody knows exactly when that might be," Thompson said at a Politics and Eggs breakfast at the Bedford Village Inn. "We don't know how good our intelligence is. That's one of the pitiful things that is known as the aftermath of Iraq. We learned how bad our intelligence is." He said America can't afford to be that wrong in the future about who's doing what in the world. "We can't go around putting out every brush fire in the world," he said. "The United States of America cannot be the world's policeman, but we've got to be the leader and we've got to have the best ...
