Unmasking the Myths Behind the Fairness Doctrine Executive Summary “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.” Voltaire P olitical activists and even certain U.S. senators have argued that the federal government should reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine, which would require broadcasters to air both sides of controversial issues. Opponents charge that Fairness Doctrine advocates are trying to reduce the impact of conservative talk radio. Click for larger image Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) has introduced The Broadcaster Freedom Act (HR 2905), which would bar the Federal Communications Commission from reinstating the Fairness Doctrine. The controversy touches on America’s most fundamental civic values. Do we still cherish freedom of speech, or are some of us succumbing to the tyrannical impulse to stifle the speech of political adversaries? Do our leaders trust us to accept responsibility to govern ourselves, or do they wish to control which information we receive? Three principal arguments support resurrecting the Fairness Doctrine. First, the “scarcity” argument holds that the airwaves are public property with a limited number of broadcast frequencies, so government can and should intervene if the public debate ...

US soldier removed from Iraq for shooting at Quran By KIM GAMEL, Associated Press Writer 17 minutes ago BAGHDAD - An American sniper was removed from Iraq after he used a copy of the Quran for target practice, the military said Sunday, a day after a U.S. commander held a formal ceremony apologizing to Sunni tribal leaders. The elaborate ceremony — in which one U.S. officer kissed a new copy of Islam's holy book before giving it to the tribal leaders — reflected the military's eagerness to stave off anger among Sunni Arabs it has been cultivating as allies. The tribesmen have become key in the fight against al-Qaida in Iraq militants, who depict the American forces as anti-Islamic occupiers. One anti-U.S. Iraqi Sunni group condemned the Quran shooting, calling it "a hideous act." Similar perceived insults to Islam have triggered protests throughout the Muslim world. Iraqi police found the bullet-riddled Quran with graffiti inside the cover on a firing range near a police station in Radwaniyah, a former insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad, U.S. military spokesman Col. Bill Buckner said. American commanders launched an inquiry that led to disciplinary action against the unidentified soldier, who has been removed from ...

Vermont anti-Bush petition sparks anger By JOHN CURRAN, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 44 minutes ago BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - A town petition making President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney subject to arrest for crimes against the Constitution has triggered a barrage of criticism from people who say residents are "wackjobs" and "nuts." In e-mail messages, voicemail messages and telephone calls, outraged people are calling the measure the equivalent of treason and vowing never to visit Vermont . "Has everyone up there been out in the cold too long?" said one. "I would like to know how I could get some water from your town," said another. "It's obvious that there is something special in it." The petition — with more than 436 signatures, or at least the 5 percent of voters necessary to be considered — was submitted Thursday and the town Select Board voted 3-2 Friday to put it on the ballot. It goes to a town-wide vote March 4. It reads: "Shall the Selectboard instruct the Town Attorney to draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution, and publish said indictments for consideration by other authorities and shall it be the ...

Study: False statements preceded war By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer 20 minutes ago WASHINGTON - A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks. The study concluded that the statements "were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses." The study was posted Tuesday on the Web site of the Center for Public Integrity, which worked with the Fund for Independence in Journalism. White House spokesman Scott Stanzel did not comment on the merits of the study Tuesday night but reiterated the administration's position that the world community viewed Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein , as a threat. "The actions taken in 2003 were based on the collective judgment of intelligence agencies around the world," Stanzel said. The study counted 935 false statements in the two-year period. It found that in speeches, briefings, interviews and other venues, Bush and administration officials stated unequivocally on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was ...

As I woke up this morning and turned on the TV, the Dow Futures were down a record 440 pts or so, the worst since 9-11-01 when the futures was down 365 pts. The Dow on 9-11 was going to take about a 500 pt hit when the Towers fell. Today, we could be staring at the start of what the Liberals and the Drive-By media have been rooting for..a bad recession. The Dow I think will go down as much as 700 pts maybe a lot more. We have only the Liberals and the media to blame for the major crash.

Read this fellow Americans....posted by MahaRushie38 By ANNA JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer 14 minutes ago CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida 's American spokesman called on the terror network's fighters to greet President Bush with "bombs and booby-trapped vehicles" when he visits the Middle East later this week, according to a video posted Sunday. The rhetoric-packed video also featured the California -born Adam Gadahn tearing up his U.S. passport as part of a "symbolic" protest against Washington and marked the terror network's first message of 2008. "Now we direct an urgent call to our militant brothers in Muslim Palestine and the Arab peninsula ... to be ready to receive the Crusader slayer Bush in his visit to Muslim Palestine and the Arab peninsula in the beginning of January and to receive him not with flowers or clapping but with bombs and booby-trapped vehicles," Gadahn said in Arabic, though he spoke mostly in English during the video. Bush is scheduled to arrive in Israel on Wednesday for a weeklong regional trip that will also bring him to the West Bank , Kuwait , Bahrain , the United Arab Emirates , Saudi Arabia and Egypt . News and it's more of the same 'Doom and Gloom' nonsense. More suicide bombings in Iraq which the Liberals crave and Afghanistan. And today they point to Edwards calling for surrender in Iraq. This is a horrible sign that we Conservatives had better return to our Reagan roots and fight...and we better do it fast. Just look at todays Yahoo headlines and you'll see what I mean.

BREAKING NEWS FROM MAHARUSHIE38 AND IT'S GREAT NEWS!! LIBERALS LOSE IN VENEZUELA!! THEIR DEAR BELOVED CHAVEZ GOES DOWN IN DEFEAT!! A ">WWWWWW!! By FRANK BAJAK, Associated Press Writer 12 minutes ago CARACAS, Venezuela - Humbled by his first electoral defeat ever, President Hugo Chavez said Monday he may have been too ambitious in asking voters to let him stand indefinitely for re-election and endorse a huge leap to a socialist state. "I understand and accept that the proposal I made was quite profound and intense," he said after voters narrowly rejected the sweeping constitutional reforms by 51 percent to 49 percent. Opposition activists were ecstatic as the results were announced shortly after midnight — with 88 percent of the vote counted, the trend was declared irreversible by elections council chief Tibisay Lucena. Some shed tears. Others began chanting: "And now he's going away!" Without the overhaul, Chavez will be barred from running again in 2012. Foes of the reform effort — including Roman Catholic leaders, media freedom groups, human rights groups and prominent business leaders — said it would have granted Chavez unchecked power and imperiled basic rights. Chavez told reporters at the presidential palace that the outcome of Sunday's ...
