Big Three Auto Execs Flew in Luxury Jets to Seek Multibillion-Dollar Bailout
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
The CEOs of the Big Three automakers reportedly flew private luxury jets to Washington to plead for a $25 billion taxpayer bailout to save their debt-ridden industry — ringing up tens of thousands in charges even as they cried poverty.
Recipients of eight-figure bonuses in 2007, the corporate cowboys used their executive perks — which for GM's Rick Wagoner include the run of a $36 million Gulfstream IV jet — to arrive in style as they went begging before Congress.
Wagoner, whose flight reportedly cost $20,000 round-trip — about 70 times more than a commercial airline ticket — told Congress he expected about $10-$12 billion from the requested bailout.
"This is a slap in the face of taxpayers," Tom Schatz, president of Citizens Against Government Waste, told ABC News. "To come to Washington on a corporate jet, and asking for a handout is outrageous."
Joined by Robert Nardelli of Chrysler and Alan Mulally of Ford, Wagoner told the Senate that a collapse in Detroit could cost 3 million jobs in just a year and put the hurt on communities across the country.
But the prospective bailout is getting held up in the Senate, where lawmakers don't appear keen to save the ailing industry. "Just giving them $25 billion doesn't change anything," Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., told FOX News. "It just puts off for six months or so the day of reckoning."
Meanwhile, back at the UAW hall, the unions are promising to accept no, nada, not a single concession. And they want to be bailed out as well. I'm sure we'll end up bailing them out and paying more for automobiles and seeing our taxes go up and the value of our currency go down. Then in about 2 or 3 years we can do this all over again. Yippeee!

Actually, they were trying to economize by taking the jet. It would have cost $20,000 to have driven a Hummer or Escalade. I'm sure they weighed the matter and decided it was the more cost effective.
If they are as smart and greedy as we are told and if they even own their own automobile, it is probably foreign made and that would have been embarrassing to drive to DC.

did anyone measure the carbon footprit of the flights to see how it negatively impacted global warming.... I think Algore should investigate this fiasco.....
Absolutely! Send Al in his private jet up to Detroit to read them the riot act!! Honestly, if it wasn't so pathetically sad, this would really make a great comedy.

They either have really big cajones or single digit IQ's or maybe they think we taxpayers have single digit IQ's.
We still have the choice of not buying a GM, Ford, Chysler product. To top all of this is Toyota and Honda are looking to expand their manufacturing facilities in the U.S..

I rather think they do drive Detroit-made cars, but they're such pieces of crap, they couldn't drive to the city limits before breaking down. If they did manage to make it to Washington, their cars would be towed to the trash heap and they'd be forced to fly home commercial. How humiliating would THAT be?

These guys are nothing short of incredible -- I think I will become a bank also -- and force the Feds to make me take bailout money!
GMAC files for bank holding status

DENVER - GMAC Financial Services has applied to become a bank holding company, which would allow General Motors' financing arm to be eligible for aid under the government's $700 billion bank rescue plan.
GMAC said Thursday the change in status would shore up its capital position and allow it to continue providing automotive and mortgage financing.
GMAC is majority owned by the private equity firm Cerberus, which also owns most of Chrysler. General Motors Corp., which itself is running out of cash, owns a 49 percent stake in GMAC.
GMAC also is launching cash tender offers to buy or swap debt held by its units and mortgage business Residential Capital LLC for cash, new notes or preferred stock, in a move to boost capital levels and reduce debt.
The financing arms of Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC may also apply to become bank holding companies, and therefore become eligible for a piece of the financial bailout being administered by the Treasury Department.
Earlier this month, GMAC reported its third-quarter loss widened to $2.52 billion compared to a loss of $1.6 billion a year ago. Steep losses at the company's insurance division weighed heavily on the results.
GMAC also warned that its mortgage lending division, ResCap, could fail. In September, GMAC announced it would close all of its 200 retail offices and lay off about 5,000 employees, with the bulk of cuts coming at ResCap. The division lost $1.91 billion in the third quarter, compared with $2.26 billion a year ago.
GMAC has tightened its criteria for U.S. consumers seeking financing, including limiting purchases to those with a credit score of 700 or above and limiting how much financing about the value of a new car consumers can receive.
Shares of GM fell 24 cents, or 8.6 percent, to $2.55 in morning trading.
GMAC is just following suit, Jim. American Express and the Hartford did this already.

I know msbobbie -- but this is another attemp to double team since the auto bailout wasn't looking good! At least Amex and Hartford are in the financial sector!
These companies could have bailed themselves out years ago, made billions and positioned their companies on the cutting edge of technology. I don't have to be a mechanic to say the combustible engine hasn't changed much since it's creation. The computer driven bells and whistles have, but not the basic design. GM is going to roll out the "Volt" and it is very inferior to the EV1 that was killed years ago.
The Volt will have a daily range of about 45 miles I believe. The EV1 had a range of an average of 145 miles a day and that was before tons of advancements were made with batteries.
Consider buying this documentary as it's an eye-opener. The solutions exist, but are being killed like the EV1.
Another bailout (sellout) of the American taxpayer.
If this 25B bailout is approved, watch sales of new cars drop even more. There has to be enough jobs for people to buy a new car, our economy is in the tank now and we are dragging most of the world down with us.
The CEOs and very high upper management live in their grand estates, have money in hidden overseas accounts and have very little contact with the real world. The same applies to many of our elected officals. This is way they had no idea they flying in on multi million corporate jets would cause an uproar with taxpayers.
I think this bill will pass in some form, as to how much and what kind of a deal (plan) I have no idea. Look for the credit card companies to be next. It never ends !
It seems odd that, while the airline industry is responsible for at least 11 percent of greenhouse gases emitted, the environmentalists are not having fits about it. Their only concern is about cars and SUVs, not jet fuel.

I am a long time buyer of GM products from my second hand 56 Bel-Aire Hard top to my current 2007 Impala. They have always served me well. Even the two Chevettes I owned in the succession of products.
When I purchased my Impala I could have purchased a Flex-Fuel version but I do most of my driving in NJ and there were not many places to buy the ethanol mix. Later it turns out that using ethanol increases fuel consumption and it is very expensive to produce ethanol. It also competes with our food supply. I wound up purchasing a 6 cyl that runs on 3 when there is light demand on the engine.
I am averaging over 21 miles/gal over the 12,500 miles I have driven with the majority being local driving.
I remember Ford having a large assembly plant in Mahwah, NJ. The UAW closed the plant with a protracted strike for more pay and benefits ... Ford announced it was closing the plant. In a TV interview one of the plant workers was complaining that he didn't know where he would get a job that paid that well, he only knew how to put lug nuts on the wheels!
Perhaps we shouldn't bail out the car companies. We shouldn't be supporting the unions with taxpayer funds either! Maybe the auto industry should just bill the government for all the expenses they have incurred because of government mandates!
The big three have the American workers by the tails and they’re black mailing the federal government that if they don't give them Bailout Money they'll drop the workers into the river.
Why doesn't anyone explain to the taxpayers how and why GM is building up its plant in Mexico at the same time it closed plants in America? Or how can they be building a new plant in India and cutting jobs in America. How can Ford be planing on opening up a plant in Japan where people make less than $ 1,000. a year? How can the big three afford those luxury skyscraper office buildings? Why does the CEO's make more money than the President of the United States???
They’d like to blame it on greedy unions but I don't think that's what broke them. All three over spent money in order to be broke. Americans stopped buying their products because they wouldn't give Americans what they wanted in a vehicle. Besides they built, maintenance nightmare pieces of junk that got poor gas mileage!
Now, they fly in their Lear Jet’s with a tin cup in hand asking "Joe the Plumber" for his last bit of chump change, in their eyes 25 billion that's all that is to them. They invested money offshore and appear to be broke and now, they want the American people to put a band-aid on their boo boo.
Boy, are the American people the big chumps, or what?! The big three lobbyists, already paid off our politicians with the lobbyist millions, and to close the deal the politicians have to make the taxpayers choke up the bailout cash and pretend they didn’t have a hand in it.
It's almost laughable if it wasn’t so sickening! What the taxpayers will probably get out of the whole deal is losing Social Security Benefits because the government will say, it’s too expensive and the National budget can’t afford it.
What does it feel like to just be taken to the cleaners, again big time???
