U.S. congressional approval rate reaches new record low www.chinaview.cn 2008-07-09 05:01:59 Print
WASHINGTON, July 8 (Xinhua) -- U.S. congressional approval rate hit new lows in the recent polls, said a news website on Tuesday.
The latest Rasmussen poll conducted on July 1 showed that percentage of voters who give Congress good or excellent ratings fell to only single digits for the first time in the survey body's history, at 9 percent, while about 52 percent said Congress was doing a poor job, said the report by Politico website.
However, the approval rate of Democrats, who have a majority of seats in Congress, still led that of Republicans by 12 percentage points, it showed.
The lead was much wider in a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll conducted in mid-June, which found Democratic party beat Republican by 52 percent to 33 percent in supporting rate, Politico said.
The gap of 19 points was the largest recorded for either party since the question was first asked in 1994, it added.
It also said the poll results came as the nation suffered from a high gas prices and a sagging economy, in which public's perception of Congress was hurt.
The U.S. is gearing for the Nov. 4 when they will vote for a new president and also all House Representatives and one-thirds Senators.

How can the Democrats have a higher approval rating than the Republicans (not that I think much of either)? The Democrats have had control for two years, and have done nothing, zip, zilch, zero! I guess the same sheeple that would vote for Obama think the Democrats are doing OK????
My Vice Presidential candidate can whip your Presidential candidate!
Holy smokes, you mean their approval rating is THAT high?? They must all have a lot of relatives being polled otherwise, I would think it would be in the negative numbers by now
If you have to hyphenate your race--you are NOT an American!! This from a French-German-English-Irish-AMERICAN! See how silly this can become?
The thing that gets me is that they don't much care, do they?

Perhaps, Jim, most tend to view anything governmental in terms of the presidency (although that is erroneous) and we all know how popular W is!

I read a story along these lines the other day. According to other questions in the poll, most people are disturbingly ignorant and apparently still believe that Republicans are in control of Congress. If you don't even know who's in control, you shouldn't be allowed to vote!
Also disturbing was the fact that people have such a low opinion of Congress yet still think highly of their own reps. That's probably due to all the pork spending on ridiculous local pet projects that should not be paid for by Congress.
Until people wake up, pay attention to who runs this nation, and accept the fact that their reps are also responsible, jokes like Kennedy will keep getting re-elected for a lifetime. Incumbents have a 90% chance of winning re-election.
"Had the people, during the Revolution, had a suspicion of any attempt to war against Christianity, that Revolution would have been strangled in its cradle... In this age, there can be no substitute for Christianity... That was the religion of the founders of the republic and they expected it to remain the religion of their descendants." Charles Carrol, signer of Declaration of Independence, framer of the Bill of Rights, delegate to the Constitutional Convention, U.S. Senator
You know the answer to that Jim. At least according to the dems. They don't have a large enough majority and those nasty little republicans are "blocking progress."
"A woman who demands further gun control legislation is like a chicken who roots for Colonel Sanders." Larry Elder
This discussion made me wonder whether approval rates are higher when Democrats have a majority in congress or when Republicans hold the majority. I couldn't find the answer, but this one shows approval rates of our presidents since Eisenhower. If the graph doesn't appear, and if you're interested, you can find it on this website.
To change the direction of this country, you must change the people who you have entrusted. Do not stand by and let others tell you what is good for your country. Vote these carpet baggers out of office.
The really sad part of this story is the fact most of them keep getting re-elected. In many cases nobody runs against them thinking they can't win. They probably right, without the "party" and a ton of money they don't have much of a chance.
Some have made a lifetime career of staying in Congress or Senate. A few that do leave become lobbists.
We keep voting the crooks in, why should we expect any difference from their actions? We know what they are but we vote for them anyway.
The pork barrel seems to keep the voters of their state happy. That don't say much for the voters.

They are all dems. But the problem is the republicans in this state just run nutcase neo-cons against them. You really have to hold your nose to vote in Washington State.
"The Republican Fisherman" A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."
The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude."
She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Republican."
"I am," replied the man. "How did you know?"
"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct , but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."
The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Democrat."
"I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?"
"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that y ou have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but, somehow, now it's my fault.
The problem is that the federal goverment is just out of control and too large.
The dems and republicans are drunk with power and money.
I've given up on believing the republicans anymore. They say they want smaller federal goverment, but all they have done is expand it. And the dems are just going to expand it and they let you know it.
Neither party is conservative. I'm trying to work within the republican party to go back to core conservative values, but it's an uphill fight now that special interests have taken over.
I will not be voting for McCain or Obama. I might just write in Ron Paul.

I totally agree (cute dog photo BTW), it is super frustrating even for this long time demo!! I was all set to vote against cantwell this past time and all the republs could find to run against her was some idiot ex-insurance exec, who laid off thousands of workers and then gave himself a $25 million golden parachute!! If ANYONE is more mistrusted than a politician, it is an insurance exec (me having been screwed over on my disability by aetna).
You can't run a super conservative repub against the demos in WA state, they have to be much more moderate/centrist to appeal to voters here, but at least get someone we CAN vote for for crying out loud!! With the gov's race, it was between bad and worse, Christine or Dino, and I am not sure which was which still even today!
I want to see all the current office holders gone, voted out, our senators have been there too long, and my rep, Brian Baird, seems to have forgotten that 90% of the people in HIS district don't make a $160,000 a year salary like HE does as a Rep! Plus, he cares more about illegals and their comfort than he does about his own LEGAL constituents! As I keep saying, if it says "incumbant" next to their name on the ballot, I am voting for the OTHER guy now, no matter HOW bad he/she is!

LOL LOL--Jim, I think you got it!!
Years and years ago, when I first started college, Wash State U, we were voted the worst college football team in the nation my first two years there, and we took a whole lot of pride in that fact---LOL--then my junior year, we actually won a game or two, and there goes the ole ball game title, we were then just "average"...maybe congress is PROUD of the fact that almost the entire country thinks they are losers and do nothings?? Somehow, I just don't see people like pelosi or reid or kennedy or obama or mccain or graham etc in their TOTAL arrogance, caring what we think....
