Report: Jordan Charges Dutch Politican With Blasphemy

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

Dutch politician Geert Wilders was charged by a Jordanian prosecutor Tuesday with blasphemy and contempt of Muslims for making an anti-Koran film, and ordered to stand trial in Jordan, Reuters reported.

The charges came one day after Dutch prosecutors decided they wouldn't take action against Wilders because he was protected by the right to free speech.

An order was issued to bring Wilders to trial through the Dutch Embassy in Amman, Reuters reported.

Wilders' film "Fitna," which appeared on the Internet on March 27, linked terror attacks by Muslim extremists to texts from the Koran, Islam's holy book.

Terror

The Organization of the Islamic Conference, a league of 56 Muslim nations, said it was "deeply annoyed" by the Dutch decision, Reuters reported.

"The decision ... encourages and supports the irresponsible defamatory style followed by some media outlets and instigates feelings of hatred, animosity and antipathy towards Muslims," the Saudi Arabia-based organization said in a statement, according to Reuters.

The film set off protests in Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia and led to calls in other countries for a boycott of Dutch goods after its release.

The Dutch government has said it disagrees with the tone of the film, but says Wilders has a constitutional right to air his views. The U.N. secretary-general and U.N. agencies have condemned the film. EU foreign ministers have also rejected Wilders' views.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of three years in jail, Reuters reported.

I don't get this. Is Wilder expected to "turn himself in" OR travel to Jordan to answer for his sin or WHAT ? His own government (Dutch) refused to bring charges under freedom of speech. Seems to my pea sized legal brain  as long as Mr. Wilder doesn't go to any Muslim country (Duh) or allow himself to get kidnapped by radical extremists (Duh, duh) he can thumb his nose at the Jordanian prosecutor from long-distance with inpunity.

I personally am "deeply annoyed" that the Organization of the Islamic Conference thinks they have the power to sway governments or the legal standing to cause ARREST and TRANSPORT of persons in any country not represented in their little organization. Geez, if they have that kind of muscle then they should immediately conquer poverty within their own borders !! Or at least the drug trade !!

Well it was just a couple years ago that Theo Van Gogh (yes, a decendent of the famous painters family) was murdered by an Islamic extremist due to him making a film about how muslims abuse women in their society.

It seems like ANYTHING to do with islamics or their koran or the way they treat people is fully off limits to the rest of the world, and if you dare to thwart them, they murder you for it, if I were this guy, I would be hiding for my very life!!

I can't understand why they think that films like Fitna lead to the "feelings of hatred, animosity, and antipathy towards Muslims".  It is these types of criminal charges and ridiculous whining about insignificant piggy banks and now puppies that lead to the way Westerners feel about Muslims.

Dutch prosecutor: Wilders will not be charged over Fitna

"A statement Monday by the prosecutor said Wilders made his anti-Muslim remarks in the context of a legitimate debate."

A victory for free speech and common sense. But there remains the Jordanian effort to use Interpol to secure his arrest and extradition. "No charge in Dutch Muslim incitement," from the Associated Press, June 30:

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — The public prosecutor's office says it will not charge right-wing legislator Geert Wilders with inciting hatred for his film denouncing the Quran.
The prosecutor says the film and statements Wilders wrote in Dutch newspapers were hurtful and insulting but not criminal.
A statement Monday by the prosecutor said Wilders made his anti-Muslim remarks in the context of a legitimate debate, and he could not be charged for incitement or discrimination.
Wilders told The Associated Press he was not surprised by the decision because he had stayed within the boundaries of the law.
Wilders' film, titled "Fitna," appeared on the Internet in March. It aroused protests around the Muslim world.

I am kinda surprised that Jordan is at the forefront of these charges, as I always thot that Jordan was a bit more "enlightened" of the backwards countries in the middle east.

Years ago when Boeing was first building the 777, Jordan was one of the first customers, so had some of the first jets coming down the line.  Well, the late King Hussein of Jordan and his wife, former American Queen Noor, came to the Everett WA plant for a tour and to see his jets in the final assembly line.  I had heard one of the first airlines to take delivery of the 777 was United and they had agreed to let him take delivery and fly it down to San Francisco for them as he was a licensed pilot apparently.  Well, one of my office workers and I took an hour off as we were caught up on our work and the boss said, "OK go" and went thru the factory to see the King, boy, was there SECURITY there, I mean FBI, Secret Service, State cops, local city cops, Boeing pretend cops, bomb sniffing dogs, you name it, they were there that day.  But we watched him running around the jet and he was so excited like a kid, and he kept running back to his wife and pointing things out to her, you could tell they had a very close relationship, which smacks me as unusual in a world where those rich arab leaders usually have a harem, and he started walking with the Prez and a the Veep of Boeing to some golf carts that were taking them around the factory (the factory is HUGE, over 100 acres under one roof), and he saw me in the crowd, and I was smiling, and he ran right over to me and shook my hand for some reason -- color me surprised --LOL-- and then, not to be outdone of course the Prez and Veep of Boeing had to follow and shake my hand too, the gal I came with was behind me just stunned---LOL---but he seemed like a personable, likable person and I know his wife worked on trying to get more equality for women in Jordan, so am surprised that they are at the forefront of this stupid attempt to put this guy on trial for a stupid reason that he has every right to talk about!
