Illegal immigrants in prison costing state millions of dollars June 19th, 2008 @ 12:37pm Becky Bruce reporting
The state of Utah is spending nearly $8 million a year to keep 300 illegal immigrants in prison, but the numbers don't tell the whole story.
Angie Welling, spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Corrections, says, "While it sounds like a lot of money, and certainly $8 million is a lot of money, in the overall scheme of things it's not as big as it may seem at first glance."
The Utah Department of Corrections only got back about $550,000 from the federal government for locking up undocumented workers last year.
But spokeswoman Angie Welling says it's only about 5 percent of the total inmate population, and the state prison treats them equally. She says, "They do their time. If ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has placed a detainer on that person, they're deported once they've finished serving their time here in the state."
Funding from the feds used to be much greater -- topping out at more than $2 million before 2001. Welling can't say for sure what changed, but she says one thing hasn't. "We will do what we need to do to see that justice is served.
The Department of Corrections says it costs about $23,000 a year to incarcerate one inmate.

That's jumped to 32,000.00 a year now CJBL, but I am glad you posted this. This should stay up front. The more people see it the better. Sticky time CJ...:)
About Me: Keep The 2nd. Ammendment Alive At All Cost!! God gave us this right through man. Florida Constitution Article I, Section 8(a) The right of the people to keep and bear arms in defense of themselves and of the lawful authority of the state shall not be infringed, except that the manner of bearing arms may be regulated by law.
Hey, Becky Bruce ... they are NOT illegal immigrants - the correct term is illegal ALIEN. Just a thought. Guess I'll email her with that distinction. Rhonda
All I know is that in CA (other wise known as Mexifornia) there are so many illegals in our jails that if we shipped them all back (mostly to Mexico) it would help save billions with a B!
At a time when we are running a billion with a B state budget deficit! The hospitals have been in financial trouble for years because of the free services they are required to give to illegal aliens who clog up the emergency rooms.
California should follow the prison model of Joe Arpaio in Arizona. Build a tent prison in the middle of the desert to house the illegal aliens for $10 a day. Make them wear pink prison garb and make them work on the state highways like the chain gangs of yore. I would bet they wouldn't be so eager to come back.
