Hiller Instinct: 7News / Suffolk University Poll -- Governor Patrick and Senator Kerry

No one would confuse Deval Patrick with John Kerry, but they do have similarities. Both are lawyers with Ivy League degrees, both are liberals who like life's luxuries, and both could lose their jobs.

When John Kerry won his senate seat in 1984, the Celtics were winning an NBA title with the original Big Three, and at the State House, Governor Mike Dukakis wasn't even thinking about the White House.

Since then, Kerry has won three more terms in the Senate, but he hasn't won the hearts of state voters.

Our exclusive 7News Suffolk University Poll proves it: Just 38% of Bay State voters hope he's re-elected in November, while 51%--more than half--want someone new. Nine per cent don't know yet what they want.

"These numbers signal vulnerability. In a perfect world, this would be a huge problem for John Kerry. The hook is, is there a candidate on the ballot who can beat him," Professor David Paleologos, Suffolk University, said.

Governor Deval Patrick doesn't do much better.

Gov. Patrick says, "...by the end of my second term..."

Patrick is already talking as if he's won four more years, but our poll found only 39% of state voters believe he deserves re-election...and 41% want to give someone else a chance. Twenty percent are undecided.

In fact, given his close relationship with Barack Obama, many voters here won't be surprised if Patrick is in Washington when the next governor's race rolls around in 2010.

Asked if Patrick would join a President Obama's administration 47% said yes, 20% no, with 31% not sure.

Andy Hiller, 7News Political Editor
"You are going to run for re-election?"

Deval Patrick, Governor
"Of course, that's the plan."

Andy Hiller, 7News Political Editor
"What if Obama is elected and offers you a job in his administration?"

Deval Patrick, Governor
"Then I will say, 'Mr. President I'm honored to be asked, but I can do more good for you and the Commonwealth if I remain as Governor'--I've rehearsed that, thank you very much."

Andy Hiller, 7News Political Editor
"Care to know what percentage of state voters don't believe that?"

Deval Patrick, Governor
"No."

I believe the Governor, because he'd be nuts to say he won't take a job with President Obama so clearly unless he's sure he wouldn't.

But I also think John Kerry would, because I suspect Kerry has the same opinion of Massachusetts voters as our poll says they have of him.

I'm Andy Hiller, that's my "Instinct."

Don't count on it.  People tend to be suckered into re-electing the incumbent despite how unpopular and/or bad at the job they are.  How else could Ted Kennedy have been in there for 40 years?

In a way, I understand how Kennedy has been reelected over and over.  Number one, he's a Kennedy and in this state, that speaks volumes for some unknown reason.  Number two, he DOES have excellent constituent services.  Kerry's, on the hand, suck!  For the first time, Kerry is also facing a challenge from his own party.  He has to survive a primary this year.  He was BS to learn a couple of weeks ago that he will have to have a face off with Ed O'Reilly!

The Kennedy's of Massachusetts are like the Longs of Louisiana.  I'm sure other states have had their royal families, as well.  It all derives from patronage, which is why liberals tend to be the most successful at establishing royal families.  Eventually the patronage diminishes and they will disappear from the political landscape.  I was long gone from MA by the time he was elected and was never involved in state politics while I was there.  But my impression is that Kerry was always more of a "kept" man than a patron.  He lived off the support of others rather than establishing a system of patronage to develop political loyalty.

You've got Kerry pegged, Feed.  Loyalty is not in Kerry's vocabulary unless you're referring to loyalty TO him.  After all...he's entitled.  He served in Vietnam, don'tchaknow!?!?!   Wink

Feed,

I have asked myself many times in the past how these establishment incumbents get reelected time and again and have learned how it happens by watching in my own state of Arizona.  Many times in the past there have been good solid conservatives seeking to run as a republican and replace John McCain and the state republican party would not allow them any support.  Johnny was their golden child.  The state party machines are broken in many states and are filled with special interest lobbyists who influence the type of candidates who run.   The same typ of machine protects proven establishment croonies like Kerry and Kennedy.  Since 1992  I have had to vote libertarian to be able to vote for a true conservative who joins that party after being excluded from the republican primary process.  Year after year Arizona is filled with very moderate conservatives for candidates as a result.

Apparently, Tommy, as in Massachusetts, that's what the voters want.  Don't ask me why, but it seems they do.  In the last 20 years, I can still count on one hand with fingers left over, the number of people who voted for Kerry or Kennedy.  Let me amend that....who WILL ADMIT TO voting for Kerry or Kennedy.

Ha Patsy, I know what you mean.  It is so sad the way these old turkeys stay around so long.  The founders NEVER intended for these to be lifetime or even long term positions. When it was working for "we the people" , A successful statesman or businessman would leave his occupation and go to Washington for a term or two to dutifully represent the people of his locale and protect them from big government.   Then they would gracefully go back home to continue to earn a living in the private sector.   They would NOT drag a war chest campaign jackpot (received from lobbyists) in the millions home to pt in their personal bank account and take a lifetime enormous pension on top of it.   They did NOT trade the best course of action for their constituents to a lobby group for a "book advance".   Statesmen would never have the gall to insist on this larceny.   I sure wish Perot had been able to convince more people that the lobbyists were the largest problem with government.

Send any of these lifers home who have raped our treasury for decades.  The problem will exist until informed voters first secure the ballot boxes from any fraud and then get out and vote for change that returns us to the sensibility the founders showed.

It may be the same all over for all we know Blaze.  I did catch a short Fox report this AM on a confirmed case of voter fraud somewhere back east.

It makes me very suspicious when we have these huge illegal alien lobby groups alleging that requiring photo ID to vote intimidates voters?    Aside from being a ludicrous claim,   anyone who is a legal qualified voter and is that weak minded should probably not be at polls in the first place in my estimation.

Heavens to Betsy, Blaze!!  Is Duval County trying to compete for the highest number of voting dead folks with Chicago?  The "Daley Machine" must be spreading the word on how it's done, huh? Grim Reaper Election Day

Perish the thought, SP!!  Kerry and Kennedy already are on about their 10th life here in Mass.  I couldn't take them getting yet another life.  I'm hopeful Kerry will lose in the primary, or if not, in the general election, and I'm hoping beyond hope Kennedy will take his health issues to heart and resign at the end of his term if not before.
