OTAY MESA – Packages of marijuana valued at more than $2.2 million were found in boxes of jalapeño peppers in a tractor-trailer seized Thursday night at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Vince Bond.

Customs officers found 805 wrapped packages of marijuana weighing more than 5,500 pounds hidden in numerous boxes of peppers, Bond said Friday. The truck also had boxes of cucumbers, jicama and husk tomatoes.

After the truck entered the United States from Mexico about 5:40 p.m., officers ordered it to the port's gamma-ray facility, similar to an X-ray facility, for a scan.
The examination indicated “a discrepancy” inside the refrigerated trailer, so it was sent to a dock and the produce was taken off.

A narcotics-detection dog alerted to the boxes of peppers.

Bond said because the criminal case is pending, he could not say what the discrepancy was. However, in general, he said, “We're looking for any anomaly,” adding that for any given merchandise, Customs officers “know what it should look like.”

The driver, a 39-year-old Mexican national, was arrested and taken to the federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown San Diego. The truck, which had 1997 California plates, and marijuana were seized.

Bust your own truck, validate, make it seem like you are fighting this 'war on drugs' and get more Federal taxpayer money to further inflate your bloated program. Is it time to investigate FDA and their Pharm buddies. I'd rather inhale some of that 5500 than drink a new Coke Zero loaded with asparatme.

Bush, build the fence and put a fancy camera there like the one that 'found' green stuff! Why won't he build it and pump the largest oil field on the north slope of Alaska today that would send oil to under $1.50 per gallon in California in one year? Hmmm? Maybe he's afraid of ending up like JFK? IMF and World Bank underling thugs...grrrrrr.

Legal Drugs Kill Far More Than Illegal, Florida Says

By DAMIEN CAVE

Published: June 14, 2008  New York Times

MIAMI — From “Scarface” to “Miami Vice,” Florida’s drug problem has been portrayed as the story of a single narcotic: cocaine. But for Floridians, prescription drugs are increasingly a far more lethal habit.

An analysis of autopsies in 2007 released this week by the Florida Medical Examiners Commission found that the rate of deaths caused by prescription drugs was three times the rate of deaths caused by all illicit drugs combined.

Law enforcement officials said that the shift toward prescription-drug abuse, which began here about eight years ago, showed no sign of letting up and that the state must do more to control it.   Read entire article from NY Times here:
