The Hispanic Institute Proposes CNN Boycott;

Cites Lou Dobbs’ Anti-Immigration Crusade

The Hispanic Institute today announced that it will mount a Latino boycott of CNN to protest the cable news network’s ongoing distortion of facts surrounding U.S. immigration issues, especially in commentaries and reports on “Lou Dobbs Tonight.”

The nonprofit organization said the proposed boycott will begin today June 3, 2008 and will seek to stop Hispanic viewership of all CNN outlets, including the Spanish language service. There are now 12.14 million Hispanic television households in the U.S., according to Doug Darfield, Sr. Vice President of multicultural measurement for The Nielsen Company.

“We’re taking this step after years of CNN management’s failure to rein in Mr. Dobbs’s irresponsible assertions about immigrants and their impact on our country and its institutions,” Gus West, THI board chair, said in making the announcement. He added that THI will work with other national Hispanic organizations to broaden support for the proposed boycott.

West noted that THI called for censure of Dobbs two years ago, following three years of inflammatory on-air rhetoric about undocumented immigrants. “The lack of any meaningful response from CNN’s management, or any abatement of Mr. Dobbs’ offensive tirades, makes it clear to us that the company supports his misleading and often inaccurate positions,” he said.

The large and growing U.S. Hispanic population represents a significant television market, West said, one that CNN can ill afford to ignore. “The State of the Media 2008,” published by The Project for Excellence in Journalism, noted that Latino purchasing power was $850 billion in 2007, and, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, total TV advertising dollars spent to reach Hispanics in 2006 was more than $3 billion.

“We will mobilize this important market segment to make our strong convictions heard,” West said, adding that THI is not alone in its criticism of Dobbs. In “Fear & Loathing in Prime Time: Immigration Myths and Cable News,” an extensive new study published May 21, the Washington-based Media Matters Action Network reported that cable news program hosts Dobbs, Bill O’Reilly of Fox News Channel and Glenn Beck of CNN-Headline News “serve up a steady diet of fear, anger and resentment on the topic of illegal immigration.”

However, Dobbs was singled out by the Media Matters study as “one of the most obsessed with the topic.” The study added that the “Lou Dobbs Tonight” program “might be more properly called ‘Lou Dobbs Crusades Against Illegal Immigration Tonight.’”

It is clear to THI, West said, that a boycott is “the appropriate vehicle to address CNN’s obvious disregard for the concerns of Latino viewers and all others who value factual, responsible news and information.”

Let them try it!  They don't matter as far as I'm concerned.  They are the reason we even have to have a discussion about it.  I think everyone should write to CNN and tell them if they even try to dismiss Lou Dobbs that they will be facing a United States Citizens boycott!  I'll bet our input would put an end to the so called illegal alien boycott!  How dare them try to mess with our first amendment rights?

Amendment I - Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people to assemble, and to petition the Government for redress of grievances.

I just sent this:

I am writing in support of Lou Dobbs Tonight and especially his efforts to bring the truth about border security and illegal immigration to the American People.  The truth often hurts, and those opposed to his message do not want the truth to be known.  Lou Dobbs Tonight and Glenn Beck on the companion network are the only programs on your otherwise liberal programing I look forward to viewing.  Those objecting to the messages are probably not watching anyway, so what do you think you are going to lose by continuing to air these programs.  I can tell you you will lose me if either of them are removed.

I shall write to Dobbs, to CNN, and to the Hispanic Institute.

For one, I would like to know why the hay we need an Hispanic Institute in the first place.  Have one in Mexico, Central or South America.  Or wherever else you would like to have one.  We are instituting American style.

Secondly, why are the Hispanics watching CNN here in the US?

Great letter, bobbie.

I am so sick of the "hispanic caucus / hispanic institue ... hispanic anything"

trying to tell me why it is wrong to inforce the laws of the United States of America.

I am writing to CNN and letting them know that as far as I am concerned Lou needs to be on longer to cover all the issues / ie costs to American citizens from the devastation of illegal immigration.

Knowing Lou he will fight back just like Glenn Beck does.  If the "hipanic caucus" thinks things are bad now you just wait.  I hope that as the American public "wakes up" they vote out all of office all of the "open border elites" and put in more Tom Tancredo's and Duncan Hunters!

If we could only get the SAVE Act voted on - then the flood back to Mexico would really begin as every employer had to verfiy the Social Security number was real and not an "identity theft".

The hispanic viewership represents roughly 2%, and their buying power is much less than other American groups. CNN might lose their Spanish language services; however, would they rather lose the rest of the market? I wouldn't think so...

I sent Lou a message as well.   I imagine others outside of FS have raised their feathers with the Hispanic Institute and their demands to CNN.

They cant stand it because, we are making a few waves in their life.

I think we need to start causeing tital waves.  E mailing to Lou Dobbs and telling him hes doing a great job.  I am writing to him.  We the people of the United States of AMERICA are fedup, and they need to shut up, with all these so called people who think everything an AMERICAN says is aVIOLATION of their F--king " RIGHTS ".

BS  they talk on tv about how much they HATE AMERICA but, yet they live here and talk, about HOW GREAT mexico is, then why arent they where they belong?

If they bi--h about AMERICA soooooo  much, why in the freaking F--k are they here?????

They just recently started doing that.  Partly because of his book, I guess, and because he is urging everyone to change their voter registration.
