Reported by: Trevor Ravenscraft
Last Update: 6/05 10:39 am
Phoenix police will now ask everyone arrested about their immigration status
A traffic stop by a Yavapai County Sheriff's Deputy on Monday led to the discovery and arrest of 12 suspected undocumented immigrants.
The deputy stopped a silver Nissan X-Terra on I-93 near Congress for impeding traffic.
The driver, 34-year-old Elezar Reyes told the deputy he was in the U.S. illegally.
Eleven other people were also in the 5 passenger SUV.
All the passengers stated that had been in the U.S. illegally and were currently heading to Las Vegas for work.
The deputy contacted Immigrations and Custom Enforcement (ICE) agents in Phoenix who verified that the occupants were undocumented immigrants.
ICE agents took custody of the 12 passengers pending deportation.
