English-only business law clears Ohio House
A Senate bill allowing sheriffs to help enforce illegal immigration heads to House, which passed an English language bill.

HAMILTON — Local minority groups are joining together in opposition to proposed state legislation they say drives a wedge between government and the immigrant community.

In a joint news conference Friday, May 30, the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the League of United Latin American Citizens railed against the two bills in the state House and Senate.

The Senate unanimously passed its bill, sponsored by Sen. Gary Cates, R-West Chester Twp.

It would allow county sheriffs to assist in enforcing federal immigration laws at the request of federal officials. 

 
Opponents say the bill would distract deputies from their current duties, seed mistrust of law enforcement in immigrant communities and could lead to racial profiling.

"I would prefer just to have the federal people enforcing the law as it is now," said Gary Hines, NAACP director in Butler County.

"These are groups that are engaged in fear-mongering and spreading lies about the bill," Cates said. "We're trying to get a handle on illegal immigration."

The House bill, sponsored by Rep. Bob Mecklenborg, R-Green Twp., requires Ohio government do its business in English — though it allows for exceptions.

Rep. Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton, supported the bill, which made it through the House on a party-line vote.

"I believe we as a community are better off if we can communicate," he said.

Gov. Ted Strickland has said he'll veto Mecklenborg's bill if it gets through the Senate.

I've called! I HATE this man.....he already said in the Dayton Daily News last week that he will VETO this bill like you stated above CJBL! I have had it up to here with Ted "the most liberal Governor in the world" Strickland...he has already tried to present programs for our schools that are outright "taxation without representation". He is a socialiast, pinko-commie FREAK!

Meanwhile, I am reporting illegals in my town, they are like cockroaches when you turn on the light...they scatter. Strickland will do NOTHING!

I have no love for Strickland, but I do believe the illegals have been here a long time before he took office. They have dominated the building trades for at least 10 years. Voinovich, Hollister, and Taft were all open border globalist.

algebra, I KNOW my own hometown though...that's the point. I have seen this coming for years, but not like it has been lately- I live in a wonderful "Norman Rockwell" kind of town down here in Southwest Ohio....church on every corner- tight knit community where everyone knows everyone.

I hated Taft too...and I can't stand Voinovich...and don't even get me started on Sherrod Brown or his predecessor Mike Dewine...also  a traitor.

they signed up to "co-sponser" the SAVE Act (which requires all employers to use the E-verify to insure Social Security numbers on employment forms are real and not stolen or being used in multiple locations) BUT under the pressure of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi now won't sign the petition to bring the bill to the house floor for a vote.

So they are "spinning" you in Ohio saying they think it is important to hire American Citizens and also insure no identity theft but it is not as important as Speaker Nancy Pelosi wishes to not allow a floor vote.

If they can't even push to vote for something they "co-sponsered" then what good are they as Congressmen?

Who do they work for anyway?  The American Citizen or the Hispanic Caucus and Ms. Pelosi?

Did you hear our Attorney General Dann is now being investigated for mismanagement of money in his office? AND the DAyton daily news listed his 17 driving offenses for which he was not punished......one was an actual accident, speeding, tailgating...just a HORRIBLE driver- and no consequences for his actions.....typical- Strickland probably had a hand in that...he is buddies with Dann but doesn't want anyone to know now that Dann is in "hot water"......

BRING BACK BLACKWELL AND PUT HIM IN AS GOVERNOR...is it possible to "recall" our governor in Ohio like they did with Grey Davis in California?

Well, CA overturned Davis, and got Aaaaaaaanold.  Didn't he turn out to be the turncoat?  I did vote for Blackwell, and I would love to have him in office.

Latta responds most of the time, but he is on the fence on some of the stuff.  He knows I go after him and call him on his booboos.

I do know about Dann.  The difference between him and the other crooks is that he got caught. Put them all in jail ( a Mexican if possible), and throw away the key.
