Conservative media analyst and former Los Angeles Times news editor Robert Knight says the court battles over the definition of marriage provide the latest examples of how the media use biased terminology to promote positions they support.
Pro-family advocates talk about laws protecting "natural marriage" or "biblical marriage" while objective observers write about "traditional marriage." But Knight, director of the Media Research Center's Culture and Media Institute, says one will not hear either of those phrases used in most so-called "mainstream" media reports.
"The press has reported it as 'Gay Marriage Ban Upheld,' making the marriage law – which is a healthy, positive thing defining what a marriage is – a 'ban' on some people. So it makes it entirely negative. They've done this over and over, and they spin language to their advantage," Knight contends.
The media's actions are not surprising, according to Knight, because they frequently commit what he calls "labeling bias."
"For instance, prostitutes are no longer 'prostitutes.' They're 'undocumented sex workers.' And of course, abortion is just 'reproductive choice' ... and illegal aliens have morphed into 'undocumented immigrants.' You see, the media do this all the time -- and you can tell from the language they use which side of an issue they're on," Knight explains.
He believes the bias even extends into reporting on business stories such as the foreclosure crisis, referring to home buyers who made unwise borrowing decisions as "victims."
"Your heart goes out to people in trouble. But the press uses language like that to continue their tirade against American business, portraying them as unfeeling monsters who prey upon the unwitting," Knight points out.
The media analyst adds that labeling bias is one of the most obvious indicators of a lack of objectivity in reporting and one of the easiest for editors to correct, if they chose to do so.

That's quite ok KM...You always post good threads, but that's only in my humble opinion.

Last night. But, in re to this thread, I am not for killing an individual for them to have an abortion. I am just against it unless it's for therapeutic reasons, i.e. since we now have all the knowledge...but I can't go there. That would be double speak KM. II am just against abortion but do believe that it should be in the States hands as per Constitution and the right as a free nation. This is and always will be a hard topic for me. I will give you a fer instance on this as to what happened to me. I was on the front cover of The National Enquirer known to have an alien baby from outerspace. Naw...j/k...I remember seeing that on the news shelf about 13 years ago.
I was around 19, married and we had a daughter. She was born and then died three days later due to her ambilical chord wrapped around her neck and I was just, I don't even know how to say it, beyond belief maybe? Anyway, she would have grown up mentally retarded, among other things and I don't even want to go there. I thought at the time why would God do this? After many years and a divorce I may add, I began to realize something as I had remarried in my late 20's and had a perfectly good baby boy, was it then that I understood why it all happened the way it did.
God tested me to see if I would carry on and become man enough to handle a situation such as what he gave us. It all makes sense. Do I miss her to this day, yes. Do I question it today? No, as I wasn't ready at the time to take care of a new life. I was a Bike ridin maniac. MC Club and all. Put simply, I didn't deserve her at the time. I don't blame myself or even Debbie my ex. That's for the Lord to judge.
So as far as abortion, I am still pro life. It's what God has intentions for all and I don't ask why anymore. I throw it up to him and let him take control. I don't control anything. He does and I am sorry I have brought up the Christianity Spectrum, but this is why I feel the way I do. I'm no Saint by a long shot.
Thanks for the thread KM. That's a reason why I am here on FS. To learn, to be humbled, to be ridiculed at times as I can only say, it's ok, God has this under control. Also to maybe put a glint into someone's mind to do the right thing. We are only human. Also to share my thoughts, my learnings and to help make a difference as we are one on here even though we don't all see eye to eye.
