McCain Resumes Talk of Comprehesive Immigration Reform

UNION CITY, Calif.--Surrounded by high-tech entrepreneurs, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said this morning he would expand visas for immigrants at the same time he would propose legislation cracking down on illegal immigration.

The declaration--which came as several Silicon Valley CEOs complained about the need for highly-skilled employees--marked a slight shift from what McCain had said while campaigning to secure his party's nomination. During the GOP primary McCain -- whose support for bipartisan immigration reform proved to be a liability within his own party -- said he would clamp down on illegal aliens before doing any other immigration reform.

"I believe we have to secure our borders. But we must enact comprehensive immigration reform, and we must make it a top priority," McCain told the chief executives of several high-tech companies. "We must make the best of this problem, and we must attract the best and brightest minds to this nation."

Shellye Archambeau, CEO of the software company MetricStream, told McCain she was worried about the decline in H1B visas, which go to highly-skilled workers, as well as the fact that foreign students earning graduate degrees here are leaving the U.S. in increasing numbers.

"We should give them a diploma and staple a visa right at the same time, so they can stay," she said, prompting applause from the audience "The key point here is immigration has fueled the growth and innovation of this country since its founding."

McCain expressed sympathy for the entrepreneurs' plight, asking them about the problems they are facing in hiring skilled foreign workers. Conrad Burke, president of Innovalight, a solar energy company, quipped he had become an expert in U.S. immigration law over the past two years as he searched for qualified workers.

"It is difficult getting visas, there are caps," Burke said, who immigrated from Ireland to America a decade ago. "Certainly we need some help."

Vivek Ranadive, who came from India to the U.S. for college and graduate school and stayed to start a high-tech company, said his own experience testifies to the importance of welcoming talented immigrants. Innovation is still occurring more frequently in America than in India and other nations, Ranadive argued.

"The innovation that is going on is going on in my backyard," he said "It will go on forever, as long as we continue to accept smart people."

McCain--who has not talked about immigration as frequently since securing the GOP nomination, in part because audience members are not raising the issue as often as they did during town hall meetings during the GOP primaries--also took personal responsibility for Congress's failure to enact immigration reform last year.

"The failure of the federal government--and it was my failure too--has had a lot of consequences associated with it," he said today.

Thank you for contacting me regarding border security. I appreciate knowing your views.

As you probably know, the Secure Fence Act of 2006, P.L. 109-367, directs the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to provide and install 700 miles of reinforced fencing along our southern border. I voted for the Secure Fence Act, which passed the Senate by a vote of 80-19 on September 29, 2006. It was signed into law on October 26, 2006. According to the DHS Secretary, the fencing initiative is scheduled to be completed by October 2011.

We need to ensure the Department of Homeland Security has all the resources it needs for border security. That is why I have cosponsored amendments to the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill and the Department of Defense Appropriations bill that would add an additional $3 billion in emergency funding for border security. These amendments were included in the Fiscal Year 2008 Omnibus appropriations measure. This legislation, which provides $1.2 billion for border security fencing and $3 billion in emergency funding for border security, passed the full Senate on December 18, 2007. It was signed into law on December 26, 2007.

In addition to putting more assets along the border, we need to improve interior enforcement and put employers on notice that the practice of hiring illegal workers is unacceptable and that law breakers will be prosecuted. Both interior enforcement and border security are addressed extensively in S. 1984, the Immigration Enforcement and Border Security Act of 2007, which I joined Senators Kyl, Cornyn, Graham, Martinez, Sessions, and Specter in introducing on August 2, 2007. This legislation has been referred to the Senate Finance Committee.

If every single illegal leaves this country over night I and my familoy will have food on our tables the very next day.  And if all American citizens would give up lettuce or whatever for two or three weeks we would make a big statement to the so-called farmers who insist on hiring the illegal aliens.  Let the crops rot in the fields and who will suffer more?  The so-called farmer or the consumers?  The consumers can live without tomatoes or lettuce or whatever for a while but the so-called farmers will be hit in the pocketbook.  Right where they should be to learn to obey our laws.  I say let the crops rot for a while and we will see change.  But I agree that 100% need to leave this country if they are illegal.

First of all I am proud to be an American.No my friend the majority of the American people want our immigration laws enforced.Why do you think we have stop three trys with amnesty?We want illegals deported now.It is special interest groups , greedy businessmen and crooked politicans who want this.As far as AG worker shortages,there is a guest worker program in place (H2B visas)By the way machinery is slowly replacing the need for alot these workers. As far as cutting grass and landscaping go's,why is it that when I moved to Idaho from Calif I see anglo people cutting the grass,landscapers and constuction workers?The anwser is Idaho has not gotten flooded yet with illegal workers and lowered the wages for citizens cannot compete.You are right about some of the greedy businessmen with no integrity.I agree some need to stop taking advantage of illegals.Yes we can live with out the illegals.

Want an example?   Let's look at the actions of the sponsor of this stealth amnesty amendment, Senator Dianne Feinstein.  According to The Hill, a D.C. insider publication:

"The Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday added to an Iraq spending bill a controversial provision to help pave the way for undocumented agriculture workers to win legal status, a move that may reopen the divisive immigration debate on the Senate floor."

"The so-called Ag-Jobs amendment, sponsored by Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Larry Craig (R-Idaho), would create a process that allows undocumented workers to continue to work on farms."

It might shock you to know that this is NOT the first time our elected officials tried to hold our troops hostage to amnesty!

Michael Doyle wrote the following in an article published by McClatchy:

"In 2005, for instance, agricultural guest worker supporters fell seven votes short in efforts to include AgJOBS on previous Iraq war spending legislation.

"'This is not the place for this bill,' one unhappy senator said during the April 18, 2005 debate. 'I believe it is a mistake to pass this bill on an emergency supplemental that is designed to provide help for our military, fighting in extraordinary circumstances.' That senator, as it happened, was Feinstein."

Doyle continued:

"'The place to do these amendments is through the regular order, beginning in the immigration subcommittee of the (Senate) Judiciary Committee,' Feinstein said then."

"Feinstein's press secretary, Scott Gerber, explained Friday that 'times have changed...'"

Really?  It seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

NOW is the time to tell our elected leaders in Washington that we're tired of "the same."

But Senators Feinstein and Craig simply didn't try to grant amnesty to 2 million illegal aliens under the cover of darkness.

In addition to the 2 million illegal aliens who would have become eligible for legal residency within the United States, the spouses and children of these illegal aliens would have automatically qualified for legal status as well!

According to a TownHall.com article written by Ira Mehlman on Friday:

 "[T]he Appropriations Committee approved amnesty for 1.35 million illegal alien agricultural workers, and made available an additional 650,000 skilled and unskilled foreign guest workers over the next three years. That's 2 million new, or newly legalized, foreign workers entering our labor force over the next three years -- even as our economy has been losing jobs.

"The 2 million figure does not include the dependents of the amnesty recipients or new workers who could be admitted under existing agricultural guest worker programs."

The American people (Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike) have overwhelmingly and repeatedly told our elected officials, no Amnesty, secure our border first!

And they've responded by essentially telling us; Alright, we hear you loud and clear.  We won't try to shove Amnesty for millions of illegal aliens down your throats anymore.  Instead we'll try to sneak it by you when we think you aren't watching because, in the end, we really DON'T CARE what you think!
