The Christian Civic League of Maine is facing stiff opposition in its drive to ban homosexual "marriage."
The referendum would also ban homosexual indoctrination of youth in schools, and bar homosexual adoption, making it the most far-reaching referendum in the country so far.
But Michael Heath, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine, says a group called Equality Maine plans to harass their petition gatherers. "They're urging people to form 'truth squads' to go out and intimidate our petitioners who are all volunteers ... and probably not deeply political ...," he notes -- and therefore, he adds, "perhaps prone to this sort of intimidation being effective."
That does not settle well with Heath. "I'm upset about it," he continues. "I'm calling for this group, which calls itself Equality Maine -- and they have nothing to do with equality at all -- ... I'm calling on this group to shut down their campaign and apologize to the people of Maine," says Heath.
Heath is confident that regardless of the strategy, the Christian Civic League will be successful in getting the issue on the ballot.
