New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin Endorses Barack Obama

CHICAGO, IL – Today, New Orleans Mayor and Superdelegate Ray Nagin endorsed Barack Obama for President, citing Obama’s advocacy for the people of Louisiana and working men and women across the country:

“In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Senator Obama worked to help address the needs of our Gulf Coast communities. As the Gulf Coast continues to rebuild, other cities have faced tragic disasters across this country. Therefore, it is critical that this country's infrastructure and emergency response systems are evaluated and rebuilt to sustain our cities and protect our families. What happened in Louisiana should never happen again.

I have learned firsthand that a unified constituency can make what seems impossible, possible. Senator Obama represents a new generation of leadership, one that can help heal the divisions of the past and unify this country so that together we can build a stronger future.

Since the immediate days following the storm, I have been travelling to our nation’s capitol to advocate for policies that aid our rebuilding effort. I know firsthand, we desperately need the leadership of someone committed to changing the system in Washington that can hold us back from moving forward. For these reasons, I endorse Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nominee. “

Said Obama: “I want to thank Mayor Nagin for his support. I share his commitment to renewing the great city of New Orleans, which is one of the great national challenges of our time. I look forward to working with him and all New Orleanians to prepare for the storms that may come while advancing opportunity and prosperity for the people of this great American city."

Mayor Nagin is the 283rd superdelegate to endorse Obama, who is 148 delegates away from securing the Democratic nomination.

Not a surprise.  I am sure Nagin believes he is going to get all kinds of perks to superenergize New Orleans--something he wasn't able to induce on his own.

What in the name of God was or will be great about New Orleans.

I just caught Laughing former Mayor of DC Marion "Crackhead" Barry defending Barack Milhous Obama on FOX.  Neither Nagin nor Barry are surprises I suppose.

Does this surprise anyone?  Maybe Obama will give him another $123 BILLION for the rebuild!  Obama won't let his "brotha Nagin go abeggin"!  Anyone remember what Nagin's "chocolate" comment went like in the aftermath of Katrina?  That was another racist gem, I believe!Cool

The only advantage for Obama would be for the Mayor of Houston to endorse him -- the majority of Katrina refugees are still here!  And yep, my immediate thought related to the "chocolate city" statement made by Ray "School Bus" Nagin -- and those imbeciles re-elected him ............... sigh!

Somehow, having that moron in NO endorse anyone is not impressive, and I agree, the morons who live there and voted him back into office are fools!

I just can't understand why the top dems are pusing obama so much when he loses so badly in some states like he just lost in W Virginia...that tells me that a LOT of people do not want him as their nominee....he has the momentum, he has the "lead" and still he lost over 60% of the vote???  He by this time should have had the majority IMO if he was so popular with mainstream Americans rather than being forced down our throats by people like Kennedy/pelosi/reid and media idiots like chris matthews, joe scarbourough, imus etc.

Something is WRONG if he loses by that much this late in the game.....

If you have to hyphenate your race--you are NOT an American!! This from a French-German-English-Irish-AMERICAN! See how silly this can become?

Nagin's a funny guy.  I used to look forward to his "appearances" on Imus.  This was one of the best.  Enjoy.

Ray Nagin: School Buses Not Good Enough

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin garnered a ton of publicity with a profanity-laced interview he gave to WWL radio last Thursday, where he blasted President Bush and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco for not coming to rescue his city in time.

However, Nagin's most newsworthy comments - where he explained why he didn't use hundreds of city school buses to evacuate his city's flood victims - went almost unnoticed.

Turns out, Nagin turned his nose up at the yellow buses, demanding more comfortable Greyhound coaches instead.

"I need 500 buses, man," he told WWL. "One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here."

Nagin described his response:

"I'm like - you've got to be kidding me. This is a natural disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

While Nagin was waiting for his Greyhound fleet, Katrina's floodwaters swamped his school buses, rendering them unusable.

I am curious, is the aid given by the Government to New Orleans, socialist philosophy? Is it welfare, a hand out, waste of the taxpayers money. Should the whole thing have been handled by the private sector?

Both Federal (taxpayer) money + private + international help was given -- wasted, squandered, stolen.   See Wikipedia "Katrina"  for the amounts.

But THIS is interesting.  (Tancredo had something to say about it.)

Not really, VeeBee -- as algebra commented, this election is NOT race neutral!  Here's the census stats for West Virginia:

White persons, percent, 2006              94.9%

Black persons, percent                           3.3%

New Orleans was a great city.  It was always a whore of a city, dependent largely on tourists and before that, the river.  Some think it is dirty and run down, but like anywhere, at any given time, there are places that are being rebuilt and renovated and places that are simply beautiful.  The water drives the city and also contributes to the dirty appearance.  It has great restaurants, interesting culture, and lots of history.  Sadly, long before Katrina, it was run down by political nepotism of the first order.  Doesn't help that the whole state of Louisiana is run that way.  Many people with above average means (myself included) have moved out to escape the politics and decay creating an even worse mess.  Forty years ago, New Orleans was a gem.  I weep for New Orleans!  I curse Nagin and bums that preceded him (especially the Morials) for sucking the life blood out of the city without giving anything back.  I yearn for café au lait and begniets, a muffaletta from the central grocery or a debris from Mother's or a night in the piano bar at Pat O's before the Sugar Bowl or a day sailing on the lake with too much beer and crawfish, or Mardi Gras, or taking the kids to the Audubon Zoo, or the light coming on at Bender's Bakery when the French bread comes out of the oven, or Jazz fest, duck hunting in the fall and fishing/crabbing/crawfishing year 'round, or a street car ride down to the Magnolia grill for a late night breakfast with your date, the beautiful azaleas and other flowering shrubs and giant majestic oaks and cypress trees.... I could go on and on, but you get the point.
