bad televisionThe Parents Television Council is blasting CBS for airing a primetime show which features a serial killer as the hero.

On Sunday evening, CBS aired two episodes of Dexter back to back. The show follows the life of Dexter Morgan, played by Michael Hall. Dexter is a blood spatter analyst with the Miami Metro Police Department. However, he moonlights as a serial killer who murders only those who get away with grisly homicides.

At the beginning of the season, CBS affiliates told the Parents Television Council (PTC)that Dexter would be shown during the last hour in the prime-time lineup. However, Melissa Henson of the PTC says CBS has broken that promise by airing the show at 8:00 in the Central and Mountain Time zones.

Henson believes the network and its affiliates need to hear from concerned parents. "We feel that, given the graphic content of the series, airing it at that early time slot is incredibly irresponsible. Especially considering that, as the series progressed through the first season, the last several episodes are among the most gruesome -- [I'm] talking about lots of blood [and] lots of really graphic imagery," Henson points out.

Since February, Dexter has often finished in last place among the three major networks. Even so, Henson believes the network may have a hidden agenda. "One would think that, if they were smart businessmen, they would pull the show that hasn't been doing well. But the fact that they haven't done that, I think, clearly points to the fact that they do have an agenda -- that they are doing something that is not only not popular with viewers, it's not popular with advertisers. They're obviously trying to prove a point or to pave the way for this kind of content to become accepted and common on broadcast television," Henson contends.

Dexter originally appeared on the Showtime network. CBS picked it up earlier this year. The program carries warnings of adult content, graphic language, graphic violence, and nudity. According to the PTC, several CBS affiliates have indicted they wish not to air the show but feel the network will not allow them that option -- even if they believe it violates their community decency standards.

I do not agree with "if you don't like what is on tv turn it off"

this is a public channel for God's sake, not a paid channel. If it is a paid one, they can show whatever crazy adult content if they want to, but it is a public channel.

at least show a bit of decency if you are not going to follow FCC rules
