It's time to fight against this bill!  Phone, fax, e-mail or anything else you can think of!  We have to treat this bill like it was another amnesty bill!  Don't let them get away with this!  America has been through enough of their crap!  It's time to show them who is in charge!  We hired them to represent "us", they have no right to do it any other way!   Let them know that if they vote for this bill they are out!  Let's get a letter together and send that too!
Congress to transform America to socialism?
Exclusive: Henry Lamb warns of water bill that would 'destroy' private property rights

By Henry Lamb

The classic definition of socialism is: government control of the sources of production. A bill now before Congress, H.R. 2421, will give the federal government absolute control over all sources of production. This bill, if enacted, will instantly convert the United States into a socialist nation.

The debate, however, is not about the merits of socialism over capitalism and free markets; the debate is about water. The bill will give to the federal government control over all water in the United States, and control over all "… activities affecting these waters."

Water is essential in the production of virtually everything. If the government controls water, and all "activities affecting these waters," then the government controls the sources of production.

There is absolutely no need for the government to take this draconian step. Water is already regulated far beyond necessity. The control and regulation of water has stripped property rights from people in every state – often for no definable public benefit. This bill will destroy the last vestige of the idea of private property rights.

For more than a generation, the liberal philosophy that government should "manage" society has prevailed in the education system and in practice. The 1973 Endangered Species Act gave the federal government power to declare private property to be "critical habitat" under the jurisdiction of the federal government. Court decisions in the 1980s defined privately owned "wetlands" to be the jurisdiction of the federal government. The 1990s saw the rise of comprehensive planning as the most effective way to control the use of land. Now, we're faced with a bill to give government the power to control the use of water and all "activities affecting these waters," and with it goes all claims to private property rights.

Americans have accepted the idea that the protection of a single population of a sub-species of some bug or weed is more important than the rights of the property owner. Americans have accepted the idea that some appointed planning council knows better how land should be used than the people who own and pay taxes on the land. Now, Americans are expected to accept the notion that government should control the water supply, and thereby control the sources of all production.

With all the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the current economic downturn, no one seems to be pointing to government's involvement in and mismanagement of the marketplace. Why Americans sat by and allowed government to take their freedom away piecemeal is a mystery posterity will surely ponder. Historically, Americans rallied behind whatever effort it took to keep socialism from overtaking this nation. Now, Congress is moving rapidly toward enacting a law that will effectively embrace socialism.

The voices in Washington in opposition to this transformation are few and are drowned out by big-name officials who command media attention. This condition did not occur overnight. For a generation, a government-controlled education system has produced people who actually believe that government should be the master of society, rather than society being the master of government.

For a generation, these people have been gaining political power in local, state and federal offices. Now, it is difficult to find an elected body of government anywhere that is not dominated by people who believe the power of government must supersede the power of the people.

This condition will not be corrected overnight – if ever. Someone has to teach a new generation why the U.S. Constitution produced the most prosperous nation ever. Someone has to explain to a new generation the difference between a free market and a market managed by government. Someone has to teach a new generation that the exercise of freedom does not require the government's permission.

The "someone" here will be the people who are elected to local, state and federal offices over the next several years. If the people who cherish freedom over government control fail to find and elect like-minded representatives, then freedom will continue to fade and government control – socialism – will continue to flourish.

Listen carefully to the candidates for every office, and reject those who campaign for more government programs and more government control. Identify those in the city council, county commission and in the state legislatures who vote for expanded government control – and vote for their opponents (if they advocate more freedom). Look at the list of cosponsors of H.R. 2421, and tell them to vote against this socialist bill. Read the bill yourself, and don't let your representative tell you that it doesn't expand government power over all "activities affecting these waters."

This bill is expected to see floor action within the next several weeks. If it is enacted, it will not likely ever be undone. Once government gets its hands on new power, it is never relinquished.

I'll take socialism over the current theocratic plutocracy that is America. The same system that oppresses the poor and powerless.

Besides, water - like air -  belongs to everyone. Not a moneyed few. So-called private property rights are trumped by the needs of the people.

Arby, the people of Cuba would love to sit down with you and tell you all about Socialism. Oh, and let's not forget the Soviets.  Socialism sounds good on paper. It has never worked in any nation that ever tried it.  Consider this: The greatest Republic on earth, the U.S. is in a downward spiral precisely because in the last 50 years it has slowly enacted "socialist" legislation; most specifically with the great "War on Poverty" in the sixties.  What has it wrought? More poverty, more hands out.  We were, in the 50's, after a crushing World War II, the greatest industrialized nation there ever was. We came back, we built, we manufactured.  And then - those children of the 60's felt we should start handing out rather than earning our way.  They are now in positions of power and you and I are witnessing this great experiment.

Good luck with Socialism. See you in the Gulag.

Our children and grandchildren are depending on what we do right now!

Wow...I am really suprised at you Arby. I know that you are all for the DNC, but why would you say something like that? Socialism will tear what's left of this country apart. I have nothing else to add except I know quite a few democrats that are changing their vote because they don't trust Hilary and they have seen the way they lie, cheat and steal our money and rights. Go ahead Arby, vote for one of those. McCain is going to end up with the Presidency anyway. At least we know that John McCain is truthful in what he thinks. He doesn't hold back and I am not saying vote for him, but he is a real American who does not want to see our Country thrown to the wolves as Osama Bin Obama and Hitlery would do. Here's a little thought and a short read for you.

Do you really know John McCain?

It seems in this way messed up world of politics, scams, liberals and people in Congress that just really do not care about us except for the money, saving the Earth, Global Warming Hoaxes, etc. I would like all of you to see what this man was and what this man is now. He hasn't changed. Even though his attempt at granting Amnesty, we at least know one thing is for sure. Where he stands on all issue's. For those of you that don't like John McCain, that's fine but the question would be, Do you really know John McCain in order to clarify why you don't like him. I for one do like him. He is a Christian Man with Christian Values and a zest for life along with what he may think is best for America. I don't know John McCain personally so I can't judge him, however, I was all over him when we got HB 1369 defeated and we all here did a great job in doing so. Just remember, he will be the President when it all comes to an end. We don't want Hillary or Osama Bin Obama in there...Alan Keyes won't make it, Ron Paul doesn't stand a chance, so I will leave you with this article I received for you to read and it might, or might not change your opinion of him.

NEW INFO WORTH KNOWING

Whether you are a Democrat or Republican this is worth reading.

By KARL ROVE
April 30, 2008; Page A17
It came to me while I was having dinner with Doris Day. No, not that Doris Day. The Doris Day who is married to Col. Bud Day, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, fighter pilot, Vietnam POW and roommate of John McCain at the Hanoi Hilton.
As we ate near the Days' home in Florida recently, I heard things about Sen. McCain that were deeply moving and politically troubling. Moving because they told me things about him the American people need to know. And troubling because it is clear that Mr. McCain is one of the most private individuals to run for president in history.

AP
Col. (Ret.) Bud Day with John McCain at a campaign stop in Pensacola, Fla., in January.
When it comes to choosing a president, the American people want to know more about a candidate than policy positions. They want to know about character, the values ingrained in his heart. For Mr. McCain, that means they will want to know more about him personally than he has been willing to reveal.
Mr. Day relayed to me one of the stories Americans should hear. It involves what happened to him after escaping from a North Vietnamese prison during the war. When he was recaptured, a Vietnamese captor broke his arm and said, "I told you I would make you a cripple."
The break was designed to shatter Mr. Day's will. He had survived in prison on the hope that one day he would return to the United States and be able to fly again. To kill that hope, the Vietnamese left part of a bone sticking out of his arm, and put him in a misshapen cast. This was done so that the arm would heal at "a goofy angle," as Mr. Day explained. Had it done so, he never would have flown again.
But it didn't heal that way because of John McCain. Risking severe punishment, Messrs. McCain and Day collected pieces of bamboo in the prison courtyard to use as a splint. Mr. McCain put Mr. Day on the floor of their cell and, using his foot, jerked the broken bone into place. Then, using strips from the bandage on his own wounded leg and the bamboo, he put Mr. Day's splint in place.
Years later, Air Force surgeons examined Mr. Day and complemented the treatment he'd gotten from his captors. Mr. Day corrected them. It was Dr. McCain who deserved the credit. Mr. Day went on to fly again.
Another story I heard over dinner with the Days involved Mr. McCain serving as one of the three chaplains for his fellow prisoners. At one point, after being shuttled among different prisons, Mr. Day had found himself as the most senior officer at the Hanoi Hilton. So he tapped Mr. McCain to help administer religious services to the other prisoners.
Today, Mr. Day, a very active 83, still vividly recalls Mr. McCain's sermons. "He remembered the Episcopal liturgy," Mr. Day says, "and sounded like a bona fide preacher." One of Mr. McCain's first sermons took as its text Luke 20:25 and Matthew 22:21, "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's." Mr. McCain said he and his fellow prisoners shouldn't ask God to free them, but to help them become the best people they could be while serving as POWs. It was Caesar who put them in prison and Caesar who would get them out. Their task was to act with honor..
Another McCain story, somewhat better known, is about the Vietnamese practice of torturing him by tying his head between his ankles with his arms behind him, and then leaving him for hours. The torture so badly busted up his shoulders that to this day Mr. McCain can't raise his arms over his head.
One night, a Vietnamese guard loosened his bonds, returning at the end of his watch to tighten them again so no one would notice. Shortly after, on Christmas Day, the same guard stood beside Mr. McCain in the prison yard and drew a cross in the sand before erasing it. Mr. McCain later said that when he returned to Vietnam for the first time after the war, the only person he really wanted to meet was that guard.
Mr. Day recalls with pride Mr. McCain stubbornly refusing to accept special treatment or curry favor to be released early, even when gravely ill. Mr. McCain knew the Vietnamese wanted the propaganda victory of the son and grandson of Navy admirals accepting special treatment. "He wasn't corruptible then," Mr. Day says, "and he's not corruptible today."
The stories told to me by the Days involve more than wartime valor.
For example, in 1991 Cindy McCain was visiting Mother Teresa's orphanage in Bangladesh when a dying infant was thrust into her hands. The orphanage could not provide the medical care needed to save her life, so Mrs. McCain brought the child home to America with her. She was met at the airport by her husband, who asked what all this was about.
Mrs. McCain replied that the child desperately needed surgery and years of rehabilitation. "I hope she can stay with us," she told her husband. Mr. McCain agreed. Today that child is their teenage daughter Bridget.
I was aware of this story. What I did not know, and what I learned from Doris, is that there was a second infant Mrs. McCain brought back. She ended up being adopted by a young McCain aide and his wife.
"We were called at midnight by Cindy," Wes Gullett remembers, and "five days later we met our new daughter Nicki at the L.A. airport wearing the only clothing Cindy could find on the trip back, a 7-Up T-shirt she bought in the Bangkok airport." Today, Nicki is a high school sophomore. Mr. Gullett told me, "I never saw a hospital bill" for her care.
A few, but not many, of the stories told to me by the Days have been written about, such as in Robert Timberg's 1996 book "A Nightingale's Song." But Mr.. McCain rarely refers to them on the campaign trail. There is something admirable in his reticence, but he needs to overcome it.
Private people like Mr. McCain are rare in politics for a reason. Candidates who are uncomfortable sharing their interior lives limit their appeal. But if Mr. McCain is to win the election this fall, he has to open up.
Americans need to know about his vision for the nation's future, especially his policy positions and domestic reforms. They also need to learn about the moments in his life that shaped him. Mr. McCain cannot make this a biography-only campaign – but he can't afford to make it a biography-free campaign either. Unless he opens up more, many voters will never know the experiences of his life that show his character, integrity and essential decency.
These qualities mattered in America's first president and will matter as Americans decide on their 44th president.
Mr. Rove is the former senior adviser and deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush

I hope everyone will at least take the time to realize what this bill will do to each and everyone them personally, not to mention their families.  I know some would like to ignore all that is going on and hope it goes away.  Wake up people it's not going away, it is about to get much worse!!!   So help out!  Don't expect others to carry your voice for you.  You must do that on your own!

Read the bill!  I've talked to a few people from Canada and I know they want to detour water from Canada into the United States.  Now I know that the Canadians are pretty po'd about that!  Yes, they can limit your water use.  Have you ever had your water restricted in the spring and summer?  They can tell you exactly how much your are entitled to.  If you use  more than what they consider your share.  They will be happy to fine you, or bill a surcharge in your water bill.   There are ways to restrict your water use.

Lady Jane is right everyone. This bill must not pass. I will back her as far as what she know's as I have friends in Canada and they are saying the same thing. I even came out with a thread on this and emailed, faxed and call my reps, congressmen/women and The Senators on this. I also got back a letter from my district House Member who said he was against this. This isn't a new bill. This is now trying to be passed with expedition as soon as possible. This is no conspiracey theory like Castouts have.

I don't know much about this bill, but what I just read I don't like.  I will be calling my congressman today.  Here is something I just read about it.

The Water Restoration Act of 2007, along with others, gives the federal government complete control over every waterway, river, stream, lake, aquifer, creek, slew, swamp, underground spring and even the rain that runs off your roof. Why? Well to better protect you from polluters and to ensure water safety, and of course "national security".

Here's the real deal. Oil which has been deemed the worlds most valuable commodity (remember that word) is quickly being replaced by water. Water is the new "gold". Under the Public Trust doctrine, the government is prohibited from converting something such as water (a human right…we can't live without it) to a commodity. It must remain in a public trust, meaning that it is so important to our survival that it should never be subjected to markets, trading or private interests. In other words, it should never be reclassified as a commodity. But this Act lays the groundwork for removing from the Public Trust this basic human right which is a necessity, and will facilitate it being reclassified a "needed commodity". Enter the multi-national corporations

Water is not only a basic human right, but also a natural resource. Inland states like Minnesota have Public Trust Laws (in addition to federal doctrine) which maintain the use of waterways for drinking and for recreation purposes. Every lake here has public water access due to the Public Trust which everyone contributes to in one way or another. No one can claim land at the bottom of a lake……its commonly held. No one can claim private ownership of lake fish stocks, or other natural resources resulting from the lake's existence. This applies to rivers also, including the Mississippi which runs through the state.

The Water Restoration Act of 2007 would federalize all inland and coastal waters from any source. This act is needed to set the stage for the privatization guaranteed to corporations under CAFTA and would effectively convert the entire water supply from any source into a commodity.

When I saw this bill I was amazed.  Take a look at the text:

SEC. 5. CONFORMING AMENDMENTS.

The Federal Water Pollution Control Act (33 U.S.C. 1251 et seq.) is amended--

            (1) by striking `navigable waters of the United States' each place it appears and inserting `waters of the United States';

            (2) in section 304(l)(1) by striking `NAVIGABLE WATERS' in the heading and inserting `WATERS OF THE UNITED STATES'; and

            (3) by striking `navigable waters' each place it appears and inserting `waters of the United States'.

In other words, the government wants to control water, arguably the most essential ingredient to life.  Talk about a power grab.

Mammaw said: Arby since you obviously hate America so much why don't you move to another country and do us all a favor?

Contrary to what you may think, as a disabled (asbestosis) Vietnam War Era Navy veteran, I love my country. I love my country in same way my combat-crippled father did. The same way my Russian immigrant, combat-wounded grandfather did - joining the US Army at 17 to fight in France.

My concern is about allowing a moneyed-few to destroy the planet for personal gain.

So my friend, I have no intention of leaving my country.

I edited this because once again, it's a flame. Against rule #2

You taking socialism over democracy is NOT loving your country, you have to fight for democracy. McCain is fighting to keep our democracy from folding into socialism when either Obama or Clinton is elected. Either of those two will take us into that socialist plane like Bill almost did.

I definetly do NOT want a socialist nation. If this bill passes and eventually we'll have to start forming anti-socialist resistance groups to fight the future Obama or Clinton  socialist administrations. Europe will adore this.

This thread is getting out of hand. I am locking it for reason's that we are starting to argue. We can debate and talk all we want but I, and others are getting a little short here. Sooooo, I am locking this thread. We do not need to be flamming each other. That's not what FS is about. We can disagree, but please let's all be a little more patient the next time something like this come's up.

On second thought....no, I will not lock it. Let's all simmer down a bit. Lady Jane does alot on here and I am not going to ruin her thread. So, warning to all who reply. Talk, but don't accuse, assume, or flame another poster please.

Thanks
