A French intellectual says that while President Nicolas Sarkozy wants to boycott the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, he is hoping for European unification in the matter.
Noted French author Guy Sorman says while Sarkozy has been a leading proponent of boycotting the opening ceremonies, the French head of state hopes to reach an accord on a possible boycott among the European Union's 27 member states.
Sorman recently published The Empire of Lies: The Truth about China in the Twenty-First Century, and says France will be heading the European Union starting July 1. "[Sarkozy's] personal position right now is not to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, but he will not boycott the Olympic Games as such," explains Sorman.
"[W]e make a distinction between the sporting event and the opening ceremony," Sorman notes. The distinction, he explains, is that the opening ceremonies are a "Chinese government initiative."
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has already indicated he will not attend the opening ceremonies, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel -- like Sarkozy -- has left the door open for a possible boycott.
