DENVER - A Colorado legislator known for kicking a photographer was ordered to leave the podium of the state House of Representatives on Monday because he called Mexican workers "illiterate peasants."

State Rep. Douglas Bruce, who has a history of provoking controversy, made the comment during debate on a bill that would allow the state to help immigrant workers get temporary federal visas. The measure is intended to ease a shortage of farm workers in the state.

"I would like to have the opportunity to state at the microphone why I don't think we need 5,000 more illiterate peasants in Colorado," Bruce said.

His outburst drew an audible gasp from the House.

"How dare you," said state Rep. Kathleen Curry, a Democrat who was serving as chairwoman during the debate. She told the Republican lawmaker he was no longer recognized to speak.

House Minority Leader Mike May, head of the GOP caucus, said legislative leaders were trying to determine what action to take against Bruce.

Rep. Terrance Carroll, a Democrat, said the remark could result in a formal ethics complaint that would require a hearing and possible suspension, censure or expulsion.

Bruce remained on the House floor Monday afternoon and was unavailable for comment.

He became the first Colorado lawmaker censured by the House after he kicked a newspaper photographer for taking his picture during a prayer.

Republicans later removed him from the powerful State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee because he refused to co-sponsor a resolution honoring military veterans. Bruce said he believed resolutions were a waste of time because they have no legal effect.

The Mexican Consulate in Denver did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

There's AP trying to stir up an anti- American reaction under the guise of absolutely incorrect PC.

Wish that article had a comments section.  That is what most of the illegals invading this country are to my way of thinking.  That thought may not be politically correct, but I am tired of PC.  Kudos to the Colorado Representative Bruce for speaking what a huge number of us believe.

I agree.  No action is necessary.  He was just stating the facts up front and the others couldn't handle it.

I'm with you!  He did nothing wrong!  He is right in the fact that most of these people (and it is written all over the net) don't have anymore then a fifth or sixth grade education, and in many cases less.

I think he should run for Congress!  What do you think???

He could have called them "dumb serfs" or any other number of names that would heve been pejorative.

Screw AP.  They are a government lapdog anyways.  They have been thrown into the group of people I do not do business with, along with WalMart, Target and various others.

Why even pay attention to an entity that does not report news at all?  AP just reports on what they are supposed to report on.

I went out there too--Douglas Bruce is not well-liked. I continued on and went to another article about him. It dealt with illegal immigration. The posts made me very happy I do not live in Colorado. Almosy all of them dealt with hoe we need to help indigents,. etc, etc.

Maybe the guy just got ticked dealing with the bleeding hearts.

PS It was fairly evident to me that Madam Chairman is pro-illegal immigration or favors the bill proposed by the other legislator. Whatever rules CO has that allows her to kick him out of the well are bad for debating purposes. They should use a time limit. I have always despised power being used in a bullying fashion and damn it she bullied him. Otherwise, I understand (don't agree--understand) her reaction as it fits so perfectly into a PC world.

1 for the illiterate peasants.

Colorado needs to read this and take note--

50 percent of LA workforce are immigrants Published: April 21, 2008 at 12:48 AM LOS ANGELES, April 21 (UPI) -- Los Angeles is at the leading edge of a U.S. demographic trend, with half of its workforce immigrants, many of them unskilled and speaking little English. As baby boomers retire, the same pattern will emerge across the country, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. Demographers estimate that by 2025 most of the growth in the workforce will be from immigrants. Ernesto Cortes Jr., Southwest regional director of the Industrial Areas Foundation, said Los Angeles is at a crossroads. "The question is: Are we going to be a 21st century city with shared prosperity, or a Third World city with an elite group on top and the majority at poverty or near poverty wages?" he asked. "Right now we're headed toward becoming a Third World city. But we can change that." The Migration Policy Institute used U.S. Census data to determine that one-third of immigrants have not graduated from high school and 60 percent do not speak English fluently. Cortes, with former U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Henry Cisneros and others, is to participate in a conference this week at the University of Southern California on how to train and integrate immigrant workers.  Please click on the link below to view the entire article. http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Top_News...

I don't think it is that, nancy.  They used to do the same thing to Tom, and still do whenever a story comes up about him.

It is just the Liberal mindset.  Notice they were also attacking TABOR.  (Taxpayers Bill Of Rights)  I like TABOR and lobbyied for it here in Oklahoma.

Consider the source.

It seems to me there is a mindset out there who favor the illegal immigratioin.  They used to attack Tom Tancredo that way also.

You cannot be sure how many of them there really are because that ilk create multiple user names to make it appear there is more of them than they really are.

Nancy,  Those people would not want to be confused by the facts.  The kind of people speaking on that blog are some of the reason we have such a hard fight.  Like I said "Don't confuse me with the facts."  I'm so sick of PC.  I think Bruce told it like he sees it and I commend him for having the guts to do so.  He also told it like I see it.
