Since this is starting to be mentioned on some other FS threads, I thought I'd post the email I got from the Media Research Center.  The link in their email takes you to their (MRC) petition page.  In the top right corner of that page is a yellow box with a link to see the Bill Maher uproar!

Douglas Mills, Executive Vice President

Jim,

This time, Bill Maher has gone too far. On his Time-Warner/HBO show, Maher called the Pope a "Nazi" and said the Catholic Church is nothing more than a "child-abusing religious cult."

It gets much worse. Go here to see this shocking video:

http://www.mrcaction.org/r.asp?U=6018&CID=506&RID=14625020

If you have dial-up Internet access and cannot watch videos online, go here for the MRC's Culture and Media Institute report:

http://www.mrcaction.org/r.asp?U=6019&CID=506&RID=14625020

+ + Immediate action needed

Today, our Culture and Media Institute issued a call for Time-Warner -- HBO's parent company -- to issue an immediate apology for Maher’s defaming comments.

I am asking our MRC Action team to send a message to

Time-Warner right now demanding an apology.

Go here to email Time-Warner right now demanding an

immediate apology:

http://www.mrcaction.org/r.asp?U=6020&CID=506&RID=14625020

Again, please watch this shocking video. And then send your emails to Time-Warner executives.

Bill Maher has crossed a line. Time-Warner needs to take immediate action. Thank you for your help.

When it comes to the left, you have to watch what you say, but when it comes to Christians and Christianity, it's open season.  A look at his religious background helps explain why he's such a confused and unhappy human being:

KING: Bill Maher. Last month, Bill got the First Amendment Award at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen. He was also selected as this year's recipients of the President's Award by the L.A. Press Club. Since Leno was talking about it there, what do you make of this Catholic situation?

MAHER: Well, you know, I was raised Catholic, Larry.

KING: Catholic and Jewish, right?

MAHER: Well, I wasn't raised Jewish. My mother is Jewish. But I never even knew I was half-Jewish until I was a teen-ager.
I was just so frightened about the Catholics and everything that was going on there in the church -- and I was never, you know, molested or anything. And I'm a little insulted. I guess they never found me attractive. And that's really their loss.

KING: You were special, Bill.

MAHER: I was very special. You know, I'm just -- I'm shocked that people are finding out that priests are no altar boys, you know. It's the institution that really needs fixing, and of course you really can't fix an institution when it is religion. Because when you say religion, immediately you can get away with anything. I mean, look at what the Muslims did with women around the world. If you did that to anybody else, if it wasn't under the guise of religion, you could never get away with stuff like that. So...

KING: You see no good in religion?

MAHER: Not very much, no. I don't. I mean, as long as there are people who think that this is the only way, you're going to have wars and killing and death. I don't think the hate that comes from the Muslim world comes from religion. The hate comes from some place deeper. But the religion gives it a noble framework to put it in. So, that's why it's extremely dangerous.

KING: So this act I'm doing is a noble thing, I'm doing it for a higher power.

MAHER: For a higher power, exactly. And as long as one religion says, "I am the way and the truth and the light and the only way to the Father is through me," and the other one says, "Mohammed is the only prophet and Allah is the only God," and people believe that to the death, I mean, they're going to...

KING: Why hasn't the church, Bill, come down harder on the priests who have done this?

MAHER: Because they didn't have to. Because again, it's religion. It's the thin black line I call it. You know, it's like the cops protect each other, so do the priests. And it's just amazingly hypocritical that they have zero tolerance for just about everything else. I mean, you know, I remember when I was a kid being deathly afraid when I got to be 12 or 13 of what they called "a nocturnal emission." Do you know what that is in the Catholic Church? Sounds like something from NASA. But it means, you know, if you should have a...

KING: A release.

MAHER: ... a release in your sleep -- I couldn't stop it when I was awake, but you know -- in your sleep. That's when I said, you know, I'm never going to satisfy these people, these are -- but I mean, that was a sin. But when you screw around with a kid -- you know, say three hail Marys, and you know, we'll send you to another diocese.

BLAZE, all of us realize that there is sin--evil--imperfection--in ALL human activities, including organized religion, which has over the ages yielded up an abundant crop of phonies, lawbreakers, and every other form of anti-social behavior known to mankind, exceeded only by the category of social creep known as a "politician". But religion has also brought about a civilized society where, as imperfect as it is, men and women can live lives honoring to God and to each other, if they choose to do so. Christianity, as we define it today, has brought about the greatest good for the greatest number in history, and especially for women, for it is based on teachings radically different than all other religious faiths. It's obvious that Bill Maher is a sacreligious and troubled man, a hater of tradition and the ethic that has guided mankind for eons. Some consider him funny, but I don't find his brand of sarcasm humorous--merely pathetic. In that respect, he is little different than many who inhabit positions of power and authority in our country.

I'm Catholic and have read some negative things about Catholics on this very website (i.e., that the Catholic Church is a cult).  The way I look at it...if Jesus could go through what He did up until His last breath on the Cross, then I can certainly weather comments like the ones Bill Mahr made.  It's sad that Mahr has become so jaded and lost.  My gosh, my memories of going to church and Communion and all of the Catholic holiday masses and celebrations was wonderful.  For those who think the Catholic Church is a cult, how about grabbing a book that explains the meaning of the Catholic Mass and you may find yourself having a different take on it.  We have a lot of pomp and ceremony but all of that is the build up to the celebration of Jesus.

That's true, Texas.  And you know what "pomp and ceremony" I miss the most?  The Mass in Latin.  Now it's in English, you have folk masses, rock masses, etc., do all the lame hugging and hand shaking.....phooey on that.  I loved the mystery and mystique of the old way.  That's what's mostly kept me away from the church the last 40 or so years.

Yes, you are right, some say negative things about the Catholic Church, and perhaps some chatholic rituals may seem cult-like to the uneducated.  What remains is the question if Bill Maher would say about Mohammed what he says about Jesus, and about Islam what he says about Christianity.  The Catholic Church is a Christian Denomination, and if Bill Maher speaks ill of it, we all should be offended.

Patsy, I just heard this morning on the Today Show during a report about the Pope's visit that he prefers to say the mass in Latin.  I have to admit that Pope Benedict isn't as charismatic as Pope John Paul but I'm beginning to see him in a different way now.  Seems he's old-fashioned in that he prefers the way Catholicism used to be without all the rock and folk, but rather as a serious, spiritual ceremony.  He shy...which is why he comes off as "cooler" than John Paul.  The more I learn about him, the more I like him.

How sad for Bill Maher to deny himself such beautiful spirituality.  And, yes, Elaina, I'd like to hear what Maher has said about the radical Islamics.  I wonder if he slammed those cartoonists who drew pictures of Mohammad?

Maher is a lost soul.  It must be painful for him to not understand the love of God.

Of Bill said about the catholics themselves as a people no doubt was indeed as evil as you're going to get. But, as far as Catholicism is concerned about it being a Christian branch I have to agree with him. Catholicism is a cult. This is why.

1. The Holy Rosary.

The rosary itself violates one big rule of the Ten Commandments. The rosary exalts Mary above God and that is deadly and a sin.

2. Idols.

I see statues of Mary everywhere in Catholic places.

In the Ten Commandments God says "You shall not have any idols before Me."  You must have them removed.

Also, in the Vatican itself there is an obelisk there. That itself is also an idol although I have no idea

3. Confession

Catholics go to confessions to confess their sins to priest. Does that forgive your sins? The answer is simple....No. Regular prayer does that when you ask the Lord Himself for forgiveness. Then and only then are your sins forgiven.

4. Holy Communion

This is one where Catholics have to overhaul and very soon.

Their faith no doubt is genuine here. That I commend well. One, on the wafer that Catholics eat is itself has three letters that represents false gods- the letters are IHS. It stands for Horace, Isis and Seth. When we take communion in my church we use ordinary grape juice and crackers, we do NOT have the three letters on our stuff...ever. That because we do not worship false gods like the catholics unintentionally do. About that, the Catholics unintentionally violate these two commandments every day, worshipping idols and false gods during mass. All they have to do is reread the Ten Commandments and re-examine what they are doing and they I hope will realize that they are worshipping idols and false gods. Bill Maher when he says this is saying it out of plain and straight out hatred. I say this out of genuine love for every catholic out there. I happen to have Catholics in my neighborhood and I get along with them very well and pray for their actual salvation. The new and Liberal drive-by media as well as Pat Robertson, Dr. Jack Van Impe do not see this what I see and I pray for them also that they will see the actual truth.

I wish every Catholic out a God bless and please examine again what you are doing. :)

You know, Maha, there would be millions around the world quite surprised to discover they were not Christian after all if what you believe is true......which of course, it isn't.  I am always amazed to find out the people here who are so positive that they know the absolute truth.  Really??
