Jamiel’s Law: The revolt against L.A.’s illegal alien sanctuary policy

By Michelle Malkin  •  April 9, 2008 09:51 AM

Law-abiding citizens of all colors are uniting against the targeting of innocent black residents of Los Angeles by illegal alien gangs. The parents of murdered high school student Jamiel Shaw met with L.A. public officials yesterday, urging them to rescind the city’s notorious Special Order 40–one of the nation’s oldest illegal alien sanctuary laws. Enough is enough:

The parents of Jamiel Shaw Jr., a high school football star who was gunned down by a reputed gang member just blocks from his home, urged Los Angeles city leaders today to go after criminals who are in the country illegally.

Pedro Espinoza, 19, allegedly shot and killed the 17-year-old Los Angeles High School student on March 2 in the 2100 block of Fifth Avenue, not far from the Shaw family’s Arlington Heights home. According to police, the shooting occurred one day after Espinoza was released from county jail, where he was serving time for assault with a deadly weapon.

U.S. immigration officials believe Espinoza, a member of the 18th Street gang, may have been in the country illegally.

“We have a problem with the system. My son was murdered by someone that was here illegally. No matter how you look at it, that’s what happened,” Jamiel Shaw Sr. told reporters before entering the Los Angeles City Council chamber.

Authorities do not know why Espinoza was not detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement upon his release from the county jail.

Because, as I’ve reported so many times over the past several years, catch and release remains the standard operating procedure of the day.

Jamiel Shaw Sr. said checking the legal status of criminals is not an issue of racial profiling.

Exactly.

“We’re after the gang members who are here illegally, and when they’re released from jail, they’re out in the community,” he said.

“The guy who killed my son was in custody. He had a long prison record … and he was let out without any kind of hearing. He was let out into the community on a Saturday night with no supervision and within 24 hours, he had gotten another gun.”

The teen’s mother, Anita Shaw, said she plans to attend Espinoza’s arraignment hearing tomorrow. She was serving in Iraq when her son was slain, and will ship out Thursday for duty in Kuwait and Germany.

“I’m safer, somewhat, in Iraq than my son is safe on the streets of the United States. It doesn’t make sense,” she told the City Council.

Here are Jamiel’s parents confronting the council:

Walter Moore, an LA mayoral candidate, is crusading for Jamiel’s Law.

Go ahead, Geraldo. Call them racist. What are you going to do? Dare to threaten to spit on them?

Go ahead, La Raza. Call them hate-mongers. What are you going to do? Try and stop them from getting their message across?

Hey, Barack Obama. Where’s the honest dialogue about the racial crimes the Left doesn’t want to talk about? Will you march with the Shaw family–or with the illegal aliens again?

Innocent families of all races are sick and tired of the bloody consequences of open borders.

Enough is enough.

Michelle Malkin - amazing - she actually says out loud - what so many are thinking but are scared to speak.

Love it!

Los Angeles "Out of Control Villaraigosa kills another kid"

So today the Shaw Family spoke during the public comment section of the city hall meeting-

I heard some snippets of tape on the radio & it sounded to me like the city council gave the idea of Jamiels law the big one finger wave ????? Because from what i gathered - the idea of targeting illegal alien gang members is unfair to hispanics..Undecided

I just listened again to the KTLA interview with Chief Bratton this morning played on the John and Ken show.  It's enought to make your head explode.  The reporter asked Bratton if Jamiel's life would have been spared if Pedro Espinoza had been deported after he was released from jail.  Bratton replied "We don't know that.  If he had been walking down the street a few seconds sooner or later it might not have happened."  WHAT???!!!!   What an incredibly lame answer.

The Mayor and all of his City Council Cronies need to be voted out of office.

They are way to full of themselves to belittle themselves to actually listen to Americans.

LAPD chief vows to clarify policy on immigrants

Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton said Wednesday that the department's controversial policy on dealing with illegal immigrants was widely misunderstood by the public and some of his own officers, and he would clarify the rule in the next couple of weeks. Bratton strongly defended the basic intent of the policy -- known as Special Order 40 -- which prohibits officers from initiating contact with individuals for the sole purpose of determining whether they are illegal immigrants.

Councilman Dennis Zine -- citing Shaw's slaying -- introduced a motion last week calling for Bratton and the department's civilian oversight commission to require officers to check on the immigration status of gang members who are suspected of being in the country illegally -- even if the suspects are not under arrest.

Bratton lashed out at Zine, saying the proposal amounts to "racial profiling." He said that Zine is a reserve officer and "should be very up to speed on this and apparently is not." When police get retrained on the policy, Bratton said, "the first person we will put in the class will be Councilman Dennis Zine."

Zine rejected the chief's suggestion that the proposal would unfairly profile minorities, saying officers would check someone's immigration status only after confirming they were an active gang member. "With all due respect to the chief, I've been around this department a lot longer than he has -- before Special Order 40 and after it. And I can tell you that there is a lot of confusion about what can be done and what cannot," Zine said. "I am concerned that there is all this resistance from the chief of police about what we're trying to do here."

Thanks for all those email addresses.  They came in handy.

On Kevin James Show tonight, he wants everyone to call these people and just say:  Pass Jamiels Law.  Instead of calling them, I just put those 3 words in the subject line.  Enough said.
