Congress Ready to Give Away American Jobs -- Again!

Federation for American Immigration Reform

While Americans are being laid off, Congress considers expanding visas for foreign workers to fill those jobs!

Dear Mr. xxxxx,

Right now, businesses are hiring tens of thousands of foreign H-1B workers at the same time that similarly qualified American workers are being laid off (or not hired)! Yet, members of Congress and big business want to import more cheap labor and increase the number of guest workers at the expense of the American worker.

Last week, just days after Bill Gates sat before Congress requesting an increase in the H-1B visa program, Congress responded by introducing several pieces of legislation that would increase the H-1B visa cap.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

"The existing number of visas is more than ample for the nation's needs. Contrary to industry claims, the perennial exhaustion of the H-1B visas due to the cap more than likely reflects widespread preference for lower-paid workers and lax enforcement of program rules, not an insufficient supply of visas to meet a deficit of highly skilled U.S. workers."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

An increase in the H-1B visa program is outrageous considering the Labor Department recently announced that the U.S. economy had lost 63,000 jobs and the Federal Reserve cut interest rates to stabilize the economy.

I want to support FAIR to represent my opposition to any and all increases in guest worker programs that lower wages and benefit special interests!

The notion that these visas are for “highly skilled” workers is a myth. About half of these visas are used for foreigners with no more than an undergraduate degree. The use of the H-1B visa is just another way for businesses to drive down wages while padding their pockets.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

"Our skilled wages are higher than anywhere in the world. If we open up a significant window for skilled [foreign] workers, that would suppress the skilled-wage level and end the concentration of income."

(The context of this remark was addressing how
to combat growing income inequality in the United States).

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Of the 65,000 H-1B visas granted each year, Microsoft used less than 1,000 in 2007; the largest percentage went to Indian firms operating in the United States that outsource their labor to other countries.

We cannot allow special interests to influence Congress at the expense of the American worker.

Federation for American Immigration Reform

Help FAIR educate members of Congress about the truth behind the H-1B program and protect the American worker.

Federation for American Immigration Reform

Call your representatives and tell them you oppose any increase in the H-1B, or any guest worker, program and that in an economic downturn they should be protecting American jobs.

It is urgent you act now. Big business has already started to lobby House members to increase the visa cap and reinstate unused visas from past years. Bills have been introduced and House members could start action on these measures as soon as this week.

Sincerely,

Dan Stein

Mr. Daniel Stein,

I am writing to let you know that I am in favor of Immigration Reform if that means keeping jobs in the U.S.

I am a Software Engineer with over 20 years experience. I have been laid off twice in the last 15 years. The last time I was laid off along with about 15 other programmers was because "the business requirements had changed." That was just another way of saying that the positions had been outsourced to India. I am currently working as a contractor because I cannot find any permanent work...
