Ron Paul on Eliot Spitzer ” Living by the Sword”, 13 March 2008
"Spitzer was brought down because he legally withdrew cash from a bank – not because he committed a crime.
This should prompt us to reassess and hopefully reverse this trend of pervasive government intrusion in our private lives..."
(PressMediaWire) Congressman Ron Paul said:
" It has been said that 'he who lives by the sword shall die by the sword.' And in the case of Eliot Spitzer this couldn’t be more true. In his case it’s the political sword, as his enemies rejoice in his downfall. Most people, it seems, believe he got exactly what he deserved.
The illegal tools of the state brought Spitzer down but think of all the harm done by Spitzer in using the same tools against so many other innocent people.
He practiced what could be termed “economic McCarthyism,” using illegitimate government power to build his political career on the ruined lives of others.
No matter how morally justified his comeuppance may be, his downfall demonstrates the worst of our society. The possibility of uncovering personal moral wrongdoing is never a justification for the government to spy on our every move and to participate in sting operations.
For government to entice a citizen to break a law with a sting operation – that is, engaging in activities that a private citizen is prohibited by law from doing — is unconscionable and should clearly be illegal.
Though Spitzer used the same tools to destroy individuals charged with economic crimes that ended up being used against him, gloating over his downfall should not divert our attention from the fact that the government spying on American citizens is unworthy of a country claiming respect for liberty and the fourth amendment. Two wrongs do not make a right. Two wrongs make it doubly wrong.
Sacrifice of our personal privacy has been ongoing for decades, but has rapidly accelerated since 9/11. Before 9/11 the unstated goal of collecting revenue was the real reason for the erosion of our financial privacy. When nineteen suicidal maniacs attacked us on 9/11, our country became convinced that further sacrifice of personal and financial privacy was required for our security.
The driving force behind this ongoing sacrifice of our privacy has been fear and the emotional effect of war rhetoric – war on drugs, war against terrorism, and the war against third world nations in the Middle East who are claimed to be the equivalent to Hitler and Nazi Germany.
But the real reason for all this surveillance is to build the power of the state.
It arises from a virulent dislike of free people running their own lives and spending their own money. Statists always demand control of the people and their money.
Recently we’ve been told that this increase in the already intolerable invasion of our privacy was justified because the purpose was to apprehend terrorists.
We were told that the massive amounts of information being collected on Americans would only be used to root out terrorists.
But as we can see today, this monitoring of private activities can also be used for political reasons. We should always be concerned when the government accumulates information on innocent citizens.
Spitzer was brought down because he legally withdrew cash from a bank – not because he committed a crime.
This should prompt us to reassess and hopefully reverse this trend of pervasive government intrusion in our private lives.
We need no more Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act!
No more Violent Radicalization & Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Acts!
No more torture!
No more Military Commissions Act!
No more secret prisons and extraordinary rendition!
No more abuse of habeas corpus!
No more PATRIOT Acts! What we need is more government transparency and more privacy for the individual!
No, get this straight. Apparently nobody cares if he's "still running" or ever was, LJ. The putz hasn't won a single primary, nor will he. And hasn't even received a million votes yet. 70% of the people didn't vote for him for congress....only 70% of the republicans that voted in the primary in one district in Texas. Wowie...I'm impressed as hell he can keep his rinky dink powerless 1 of 435 seat in congress. Say, how many delegates did he pick up in home state? Oh yeah...NONE! Zip, zero, nada!! Almost coffee time!

Oh yeah, I forgot. It was warm here today and I had to turn on the a/c in my car....Bush's fault!! Going to turn cold tonight.....Bush's fault. May rain or snow tomorrow.....Bush's fault! I paid $2.99 for gas today.....Bush's fault. My stock dropped a dollar today.....Bush's fault. Dang.....too bad we don't have Ron Paul to save us from all this!!

Perhaps all over zealous prosecutors ought to be suspect. Could it be that all Spitzer's highly public comments on how he was going to take down and expose those he deemed to be lawbreakers were really to cover his own tracks.
We don't need new "comprehensive" immigration laws. We need widespread, well funded enforcement of existing immigration law, i. e. You can make fun of Dr. Paul all you want, but that gentleman has the nation's best interests at heart. If you truly still believe the Bush is a good president besides all of the overwhelming evidence in front of you, then the name Patsy suits you just fine.
Suzi, I've read enough of RP to know he's dead WRONG for this country, and far and away the vast majority of this country knows it too. But Paul should definitely read more if he thinks Spitzer is in trouble for withdrawing money from his bank. What an idiot!
Jim.....he does NOT have America's interest at heart or he wouldn't blame her first for 9/11. Where did I ever say anything about Bush being a good president?? You're a newbie, so I'll excuse your faux pas.

What do you suppose Eliot Spitzer's wife's reaction will be when she finds he is to be the first recipient of Larry Flint's latest publication featuring Alexandra Dupre? For all others a boycott would be appropriate.

>Suzi, I've read enough to RP to know he's dead WRONG for this country, >and far and away the vast majority of this country knows it too.
If Ron Paul is dead wrong for this country, then many, many don't really know what's going on....I'll give you that. That's one of the major problems we are facing in the coming Presidential election....about 40%+ of the country don't have a candidate. If you fall into that category...fine. However, RP's strength was coming from the net, and I suspect there were "plants" in order to water down that strength w/ malice aforethought. You definitely got my attention because it seemed you were more "anti" than was warranted, and you had help from those who were authorized here.
The two biggest forums, including this one, were effectively blocking the RP people. I will say some of those people were obnoxious. RP, Tancredo, and Hunter were being blocked everywhere there was to be blocked. And, I often wondered what part you might have played in the whole scenario.
Incidentally, I had not signed on in the RP camp. I'm just observing.
I even addressed that several times here, and was effectively blocked. This will probably be allowed to roll since these candidates are all dead in the water....and that was the mission.
and tell me all those people with their heavy credentials don't have reasonable opinions. Or that you might know more than they do.....because you are ex-military, an ex-pilot, an PhD in physics, ex-CIA, or a variety of other things.
You are either purposely blocking reasonable conversation or you, in my opinion, just haven't read enough and don't allow for diverse opinions.... which sorta blocks the whole purpose of blogs.
No Suzi, that 9/11 garbage has been debunked over and over and over. 25 military officers?? Come on Suzi, Get real for pete's sake. You DO realize there are tens of thousands of officers in military, and you think we should be swayed by what less than 1% of them THINK??
BTW, NO ONE has ever blocked reasonable conversation from Paulies. But when they come into forums (be it here at FS, Free Republic, Kos, Huffington, etc.) and start labeling supporters of other candidates as uneducated, ignorant, America haters, unpatriotic, neocons, CFR pawns, etc., forget it. Paul may have had a few good ideas, but because so many of his supporters were wild eyed and down right rude radicals, it turned people off. Right or wrong, that's the way it was and is. And you are doing the same thing with your "you haven't read enough" comment. Just because people didn't go gaga over Paul doesn't mean they didn't listen to him, didn't read about him, didn't hear about him, etc. The media as well were not going to waste airtime talking about an also ran. How much time do you hear them giving to Ralph Nader? How much about Allan Keyes? How about Hugh Cort? Jerry Curry? Dan Gilbert? Ever even hear the names of some of them? But yet you'd have us shed tears that Paul was excluded? Attention was given based on VOTES they were getting....not hits on a search engine, or dollars raised in a day, etc. Do you hear any of the others complaining and whining? Nope...just Paulies. But we should "read more", right? Yeah sure.
I've never seen Hunter or Tanc supporters blocked. I thought both of them were terrific too and contributed early on to their campaigns. Support from "those who were authorized"?? You're really stretching it, Suzi. I have no control over what moderators or administrators believe, and I've gotten my fair share of deleted posts and warnings. If I've been overly vocal in my dislike for Paul in your eyes, you may be right. But I think he would FAR more dangerous to the safety and security of this country than ANY of the other candidates from ANY party!
Now, back to the point. Spitzer was NOT brought down because of a "legal bank withdrawal." That is just further proof of how insane Paul is to even THINK such a stupid thing, let alone go public with it.

Ron Paul recieved more donations from enlisted US military personel then any other candidate. Not just officers like other candidates. Hmmm. If you want actual information on Dr. Ron Paul and not just crap clipped and pasted from who knows where, go to: RonPaul2008.com.
PS: He has NOT dropped out of the presidential race.
>Spitzer was NOT brought down because of a "legal bank withdrawal." That >is just further proof of how insane Paul is to even THINK such a stupid >thing, let along go public with it.
You missed the point of what he was trying to say.
There is no discussion w/ you. We are all idiots. You are all-wise, all-knowing. Nothing untoward is going on....at all. How stupid of me!
does NOT go to a Ron Paul website, even thought there is a cut and pasted picture on there. If you do go to many of Ron Paul's websites you cannot find this article nor Dr. Paul quoting any of this. This is just another random blog being circulated as Dr. Pauls speech to bring him down. You people need to be carefull of what you post on here and its authenticity. As far as not liking Dr. Paul, that is your business- but don't spread propaganda please.
Also when reading the blog entry on the above link, keep in mind how much of the entry is in quotations and says after it; Dr Paul said. One of the few items actually quoted by Dr. Paul is "he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword" and the rest is out of quotations which means it is the authors point of view- not Dr. Pauls. There is so much misinformation out there these days, we really need to read these articles closely before we take them to heart.
I don't give a rat's rearend if you're an RP person or not. The point is, he was NOT brought down for a legal bank withdrawal and to say or imply he was is insane. Now what point was missed? He has taken one tiny fact (that there was a bank withdrawal) and turned and twisted it around into a rant about the evil government. Prostitution is not legal in NY or DC. Transporting a person for sex across state lines is illegal. There is nothing illegal about sting operations or the surveillance done in this matter. Oh, wait, I get it. Paul had to speak up on the issue to keep the financial support of the Bunny Ranch! Nevermind.

Uh, Jim, it doesn't matter one iota who got the most donations from the military. And, BTW, that is HIS say so....there is NO distinction on a contribution form to say whether you are IN the military or if you're a civilian employee of the military. If one was an army office on active duty, or a cashier in the base commissary, the employer is still the US Army. He didn't get the VOTES though, did he? So who really cares about a few dollars in donations? Your point? Paul doesn't have to "drop out" of the race. He was never really IN the race.
