Parent Seeing Red After School Letter In Spanish Tuesday, March 4, 2008 WBAL Radio as reported by Anne Kramer
Sandi Henley opened a letter from Anne Arundel County School Superintendent Kevin Maxwell that made her see red. The letter about MSA testing was written in English on one side and Spanish on the other.
"We just felt it was a way of Dr. Maxwell to be politically correct, in two languages Spanish and English," Henley tells WBAL Radio. She wants the mailings in both languages stopped.
"Our tax dollars are being used to support and fund these sort of things. To what end do you feel a need to have things listed in Spanish," says Henley.
She and her husband have written a letter to Dr. Maxwell asking questions about the decision.
Anne Arundel County Schools started sending out system wide mailings in both languages back in the fall. Public Information Officer Bob Mosier says the move is a way to inform parents who don't speak English of what is happening with their child's education.
He says there is a growing population of Hispanics in the county, particularly in the Annapolis area where there is an increase in students requiring ESOL (English as a second language) services.
Parent Sandi Henley says her son's science textbook also has a Spanish index.
The school system is looking at sending out English and Spanish automated telephone messages when need be as well.
"We are not teaching the children K through 12 in Spanish. This is not a Spanish immersion program or anything like that. This is an effort to communicate with the parents of those students," says Mosier.
Officials with the State Department of Education say that other school systems in the state have been sending out mailings in different languages. And the website for the state has information in 15 other languages besides English.
Henley says there is a message she hopes to send with her concerns. "This is America. We speak English in America, don't cater to the minority at the sake of the majority," says Henley.
Where has this lady been for the past few decades? People have complaining about this type of thing for a long, long time now. If you cater to people in Spanish or any other language, you remove the motivation to learn English and fit in better here. Just look at Miami for crying out loud. They've been bending over backwards for almost 40 years and look where it's gotten them.
"Had the people, during the Revolution, had a suspicion of any attempt to war against Christianity, that Revolution would have been strangled in its cradle... In this age, there can be no substitute for Christianity... That was the religion of the founders of the republic and they expected it to remain the religion of their descendants." Charles Carrol, signer of Declaration of Independence, framer of the Bill of Rights, delegate to the Constitutional Convention, U.S. Senator
See, soon we will have dual languages and it is starting in the schools, they are pushing and aiding in this problem when they should be FORCING english! Annapolis?? That is a LONG way from the border, so does that tell anyone how bad this problem really is?
If you have to hyphenate your race--you are NOT an American!! This from a French-German-English-Irish-AMERICAN! See how silly this can become?

We have that problem up here in Flagstaff as well. All school letters come with Spanish on the back- even after we passed a state law declaring English as Arizona's only official langauge last year. I consider it descrimination against any other groups of people with English as a Second language that may have immigrated here legally.
GET CONGRESS ATTENTION! CHANGE YOUR W-4 AT WORK AND CLAIM 10 DEPENDENTS SO NO TAXES WILL BE TAKEN FROM YOUR PAYCHECK. WHEN THE MONEY STOPS COMING IN MAYBE THEY WILL REMEMBER THEY ARE SERVANTS TO WE THE PEOPLE.
I am from Flagstaff as well and know that there are enclaves of illegals here, and I am a former teacher as well so I understand what you are saying in regard to the English Language Proposition not being enforced and as you know, we do have a large Navajo population, who deserve the consideration that you and msbobbie have mentioned.
May I say that we have a mayoral election next week, and this is what one of the candidates, Rick Krug, said to me, and I believe he would help Proposition 200 to become an enforced reality in Flagstaff.
Flagstaff will not be a sanctuary city as long as I am mayor. It serves neither our city nor those here illegally to grant special protections to those who should follow the system we already have in place to immigrate to our country.
I welcome ICE sitting up shop here in Northern Arizona. I will work with them to insure that Flagstaff remains safe.
If you have any other questions, please contact me any time.

Like most Americans, I don't see a problem here. The offended mother should find something more substantial to complain about - like $12 billion a month spent on an illegal war or a criminal junta in the White House.

The issue is not just what language you speak, although many would love for you to think that.
At a minmum, the problem here is that when people come to this country, they need to learn English in order to become fully functional in society. Otherwise they will remain at an economic and political disadvantage--this KEEPS THEM IN THEIR PLACE, so to speak. And it makes them easier to manipulate.
While I enjoy diversity, travelling, and love learning about other cultures, I believe one of the ways that this country is being destroyed is by by encouraging illegal immigration, and the building up of groups to cause divisivness both between American citizens and these groups and between the groups themselves.
Ever heard of the concept of Divide and Conquer....if you want to control a group --or a country politically-- this is one of the tried and true methods.
Arby - If the school districts are going to cater to the Spanish speakers, they need to provide translation in ALL languages spoken by students/families. Sounds like a form of discrimination to me. Many schools in Phoenix have classrooms where fifteen or more different languages are spoken! Can you imagine how costly it would be to send home info. in all of those languages? Another wise use of taxpayer money! Especially in AZ where many districts will be losing teachers, programs and other essentials because of the state's money woes. As an AZ taxpayer, I feel obligated to complain about the two BILLION dollars spent each year educating non-citizens (illegals) in our schools. And, yes, Pres. Bush is partly to blame, but if you think Obama or Clinton will do anything to solve that problem, you're mistaken.
This is our country, take it back! (Thank you Tom Tancredo!) Press 1 for English; Press 2 to deport all illegal immigrants!
