TG, when McPain makes the "liberal" 'slip up' it seems to roll right off his tongue. LOL.

I went to dinner with some friends and there were 4 adult women and 4 adult men - most in their early to mid 40's and no one had decided who they would vote for.  Some were Dem's that were leaning McCain because the other two are just going to raise taxes so high you'll never be able to save.  Others were Republicans who didn't like McCain because they had fought hard against the McCain/Kennedy bill and did not trust him.

Of the top 3 contenders out of 8 registered voters no one really wanted to vote for any of them.  They all wanted to write in someone else.  Only 2 of us were Independents.

I was the only true Lou Dobbs viewer and non of them belong to Numbers USA or other groups - at this time.

So it seems that alot of Americans whether they call themselves Conservatives or Liberals or Dem's or Republicans don't like alot about these candidates.

Very good observation, CJBL.  My family is evenly split and both sides are "sick" about the selection they have to make.  Today, McCain actually praised NAFTA and said he would keep it. Guess his "freudian slip" of being a liberal Republican is right on.

CJBL, Jani,  I truly believe everyone who wants to vote should take an exam first.  The first question should be on a given candidates value system, the next on the issues of our time, etc  There are too many voters out there who don't have any idea as to what is going on in this Country.

BTW, I cancelled McCains e-mails twice today, yet I keep getting more.  Il'll keep counting.

I think they call a liberal republican a RINO -- Republican In Name Only.   We knew that all along and now he is confirming it for us.

I will vote for Huckabee (forth or fifth choice) as a protest against McCain and with some small hope that he can "get back in there".  If he is not on the ballot, I will "write-in".

Amnesty Proponents Launch Campaign to Shut Down Debate!
Please Act Now to Ensure Our Voices are Heard!

Having lost last year's epic legislative battle over the Bush-Kennedy
amnesty bill, pro-amnesty forces are regrouping and launching an
all-out campaign to censor the media and stop the debate over
true immigration reform.  This attack on the media should not
come as a surprise. Having failed at every turn to win the immigration
debate on the merits, pro-amnesty groups now have little choice but to
try to shut it down. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO ENSURE THAT OUR VOICES ARE
HEARD AND THAT FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS PRESERVED!

As part of this campaign, La Raza and other amnesty proponents are
specifically targeting corporate executives at CNN, MSNBC, and FOX and
are asking them to ban representatives from pro-enforcement
organizations such as FAIR and NumbersUSA from the airwaves. This
amounts to nothing more than an attempt to censor the media and
control what points of view the American public can hear. To read more
about these attacks on the media, see this Associated Press
article.
http://www.fairus.org/site/R?i=9HEGLW3dqy7_NIriFOOe3w..

FAIR is urging all members, activists, and friends to take action
immediately to counter this attack on the media!!!! Please contact the
media executives listed below and tell them how important it is that
both sides of the immigration debate are presented on the airwaves.
Tell them organizations like FAIR and NumbersUSA represent millions of
Americans who want our immigration laws enforced. Please use the
email, fax, or phone numbers below to respectfully share your
opinions. To send a fax, click here.

This alert is of critical importance!!! Right now, media outlets
continue to give voice to the millions of Americans who want true
immigration reform. However, if media executives do not hear from you,
the only voices they will hear are from amnesty proponents!!! Let them
know that your opinion matters too!!!

Dear Mr. (name of executive),

You have probably heard from amnesty proponents and special interest
organizations asking your network to not allow groups such as the
Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and Numbers USA to
be allowed on air as guests.  As a viewer and as a concerned
American wanting to here both sides of the immigration debate, I
strongly object to these McCarthy-like tactics designed to silence the
voices of longstanding, credible organizations fighting for meaningful
immigration reform.

Immigration reform is one of the most important issues of our
time.  It deserves broad media attention and a vigorous, robust
national debate.  And, while disagreement is a perfectly
acceptable part of this public policy process, shutting down debate
through censorship, intimidation, and baseless allegations is not and
never will be acceptable to me, nor should it be acceptable to media
organizations that pride themselves on being independent.  I
cherish living in a nation where our First Amendment rights allow
Americans to hear all sides of all issues.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform is the largest and
oldest immigration reform group in America. Over the course of 30
years, FAIR has testified before Congress over a hundred times, and
has appeared on your network and others on a weekly basis offering
fair, practical and effective solutions to our immigration problems.

By attempting to dictate who may and may not appear as guests on your
network, pro-amnesty special interest organizations are doing nothing
less than attempting to silence their largest threat - groups that
they disagree with and who represent the vast majority of
Americans.  I urge you to resist this coordinated campaign to
stop the debate.

Sincerely,

(your name)

McCain must walk tightrope on immigration

Teresa Puente, The Chicago Sun-Times

All the tough talk on immigration hasn't helped Republicans win elections.

Senator John McCain is poised to become the Republican presidential nominee, and his immigration policies were the most moderate of the GOP competitors.

The "let's deport them all" position resulted in failure for former Governors Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee and for U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo.

Huckabee called for all illegal immigrants to leave within 120 days. Romney exploited the immigration theme in his ads.

This also should be a warning to aspiring politicians such as Jim Oberweis, who's running for Congress in Illinois' 14th District to fill the seat vacated by House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

In his failed 2004 Senate campaign, Oberweis aired a commercial in which he flew in a helicopter over Soldier Field. Some 10,000 illegal immigrants flood into the country each day -- "enough to fill Soldier Field every week," he said with great unsubstantiated exaggeration. "Illegal aliens are coming here to take American workers' jobs."

This time around, we see a softer Oberweis wearing a sweater vest and standing in front of a fireplace as soothing guitar music plays in the background of his TV campaign ads. He still wants to make English the official language of the United States and strengthen the border. And it's no surprise he's still against amnesty. But his message now isn't as vitriolic.

The truth is most Americans, including most Republicans, aren't as extreme on immigration as is widely perceived.

The deport-them-all crowd is "extremely loud. They phone in to talk radio. They call the U.S. Congress," said Cecilia Munoz with the National Council of La Raza in Washington, D.C. "But they're not numerous enough to turn an election."

Most Americans believe there should be fewer illegal immigrants in this country, but only three out of 10 want them all deported, according to a recent CNN Opinion Research poll.

A recent Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll found that 67 percent of registered voters favor giving illegal immigrants who pay taxes and obey the law a second chance to stay legally in the United States.

What does this all mean for McCain?

Let's not forget that he teamed up with liberal Ted Kennedy in 2006 to push for legislation that would have given many of the nation's 12 million undocumented immigrants a path to legalization. Last year, McCain distanced himself from those negotiations in Congress, and we all know what happened. Nada.

But lately, McCain is placing more of an emphasis on border security and talking less about guest-worker programs and pathways to legalization.

"For the Republican base, he's got to do that border security first rhetoric," said Douglas Rivlin, with the National Immigration Forum in Washington, D.C.

If McCain goes too far right to appease a small but vocal minority, he risks alienating moderate Republican and Latino voters. McCain has had strong Latino voter support in his home state of Arizona, and he is hoping to regain Republican losses.

In a recent Pew Hispanic Center survey, 23 percent of Latinos identified themselves as Republican. This is down significantly from the 40 percent of the Latino vote President Bush got in 2004, a record for a Republican presidential candidate.

McCain also has some appeal with Latino Democrats and independents.

"Hispanics are the fastest growing segment of the electorate," Munoz points out.

McCain faces a difficult balancing act. It makes more sense for him to support what most Americans want -- secure borders, yes, but also a humane plan to help legalize those who contribute to our economy and our country.

If McCain goes too far to the right, he will lose.
