Democratic logoConservative media analyst Brian Fitzpatick says the mainstream press has engaged in "adulatory worship" of Democratic presidential frontrunner Barack Obama, heaping praise on the first-term Illinois senator rather than scrutinizing his record and policy positions.

MSNBC host Chris Matthews said Barack Obama's victory speech Tuesday night caused a "thrill going up [his] leg." Brian Fitzpatick, senior editor of the Culture and Media Institute, says the comment by Matthews is a perfect example of the news media's widespread infatuation with Obama.

"Watching the coverage of Obama is like watching the triumph of emotion over reason," says Fitzpatrick. "Nobody's looking deeply into his policy prescriptions; nobody seems to care."

The press, notes the media analyst, is "very excited" about Obama's personality. "They think he's a better candidate than Hillary Clinton, and so they've actually started to ask Clinton critical questions -- which I think is the most telling indicator that they've decided to side with Obama," he observes.

Another example? Fitzpatrick says press coverage of Obama's autobiography never discussed the anger Obama said he felt when forced to "play by the white man's rules." Yet the media portrayed Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas -- a gregarious, happy man -- as "sullen and angry" and "lashing out" in his recently published memoir.

According to the Culture and Media Institute spokesman, it is obvious the press is rooting for Obama to win the White House. "You just hear Barack Obama trotting out a laundry list of all the promises he's making to people," says Fitzpatrick.

For example, he continues, the Democratic frontrunner has promised he is going to provide universal healthcare -- and then, in the same sentence, that he is going to reduce healthcare costs for the average American family by $2,500 a year. "I don't know how anybody would do both of those things," says Fitzpatrick, "but he promises both of them at once and nobody seems to be calling him on it, asking him how this is to be done."

The media analyst has a theory on Obama's popularity with the media. "I think the reason is he fills a void for many of the people who are watching this race," he postulates. "They want to find somebody who they can believe in and trust and [who they] believe is going to make the system better."

Fitzpatrick says it is a "frightening" prospect to think that the senator with the most liberal voting record last year could talk about "change," never say what it entails, and then get into the Oval Office and claim a mandate from the public to do whatever he desires.
