Dollar daze — NYC shops accepting euros
Eager to take them from foreigners visiting because of the falling dollar

NEW YORK - In the latest example that the U.S. dollar just ain't what it used to be, some shops in New York City have begun accepting euros and other foreign currency as payment for merchandise.
"We had decided that money is money and we'll take it and just do the exchange whenever we can with our bank," Robert Chu, owner of East Village Wines, told Reuters television.
The increasingly weak U.S. dollar, once considered the king among currencies, has brought waves of European tourists to New York with money to burn and looking to take advantage of hugely favorable exchange rates.
"We didn't realize we would take so much in and there were that many people traveling or having euros to bring in. But some days, you'd be surprised at how many euros you get," Chu said.
"Now we have to get familiar with other currencies and the (British) pound and the Canadian dollars we take," he said.
While shops in many U.S. towns on the Canadian border have long accepted Canadian currency and some stores on the Texas-Mexico border take pesos, the acceptance of foreign money in Manhattan was unheard of until recently.
Not far from Chu's downtown wine emporium, Billy Leroy of Billy's Antiques & Props said the vast numbers of Europeans shopping in the neighborhood got him thinking, "My God, I should take euros in at the store."
Leroy doesn't even bother to exchange them.
"I'm happy if I take in 200 euros, because what I do is keep them," he said. "So when I go back to Paris, I don't have to go through the nightmare of going to an exchange place."
My thoughts: Now, it's not just the Peso from Mexico that businesses in the U.S. are accepting. It's also the Euro. So, we've got currency from "south of the border" and currency from across the ocean that is being accepted.
This is a total slap in the face when it comes to having one currency for America. And, the hits just keep coming.

This is happening because we are in the early stages of a run on the dollar, and this is only going to get worse creampuff. When you finance wars via an inflation tax by "printing" more money and turning it over to the defense department, because the political will to raise taxes is not there, this is what you get. The stage has pretty much been set for hyperinflation in a couple of years, due to the policies of the fed and this president. People are taking other currencies, because the dollar is not good as gold anymore. I find it ironic that you see this as a slap in the face, yet you criticize the one presidential candidate that has made this his number one issue. I believe February 11th, Iran is no longer taking dollars for oil. We know what happened to Iraq when they tried that back in 2001.
The point I was making was that America has a U.S. Dollar. Therefore, if people want to come to this Country and purchase products then they should be using the Dollar Bill, no Euro, Peso, or Yen. Just like, people that come from other countries should be speaking English, not Japanese, Yugoslavian, or Hindu.
And, the price doesn't change just because they have Euros. The price that we pay and the price that they pay is equal. They may have to dish out less Euro for the product, but the product will still be the same. Bananas will still cost $1.35/lb. whether it's in Euro or U.S. Dollars. The only difference is the number of Euros a person will have to give.
So, they can change their Euro into Dollars when they get here. There are such things as banks. I believe they do deal with currency exchanges.
