Study: False statements preceded war

By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer 20 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The study concluded that the statements "were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses."

The study was posted Tuesday on the Web site of the Center for Public Integrity, which worked with the Fund for Independence in Journalism.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel did not comment on the merits of the study Tuesday night but reiterated the administration's position that the world community viewed Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein, as a threat.

"The actions taken in 2003 were based on the collective judgment of intelligence agencies around the world," Stanzel said.

The study counted 935 false statements in the two-year period. It found that in speeches, briefings, interviews and other venues, Bush and administration officials stated unequivocally on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them or had links to al-Qaida or both.

"It is now beyond dispute that Iraq did not possess any weapons of mass destruction or have meaningful ties to al-Qaida," according to Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith of the Fund for Independence in Journalism staff members, writing an overview of the study. "In short, the Bush administration led the nation to war on the basis of erroneous information that it methodically propagated and that culminated in military action against Iraq on March 19, 2003."

Named in the study along with Bush were top officials of the administration during the period studied: Vice President Dick Cheney, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan.

Bush led with 259 false statements, 231 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 28 about Iraq's links to al-Qaida, the study found. That was second only to Powell's 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq and al-Qaida.

The center said the study was based on a database created with public statements over the two years beginning on Sept. 11, 2001, and information from more than 25 government reports, books, articles, speeches and interviews.

"The cumulative effect of these false statements — amplified by thousands of news stories and broadcasts — was massive, with the media coverage creating an almost impenetrable din for several critical months in the run-up to war," the study concluded.

"Some journalists — indeed, even some entire news organizations — have since acknowledged that their coverage during those prewar months was far too deferential and uncritical. These mea culpas notwithstanding, much of the wall-to-wall media coverage provided additional, 'independent' validation of the Bush administration's false statements about Iraq," it said

---------------------------------------------------

All the lies I see here are made by the study. Bush actually made  0 lies about Iraq and about 0 lies about connections Hussein had with Al-Qaeda. Study people....you're the one with the lies. Get real, Liberals!!

The WMD's had either "Made in Russia" or "Made in France" on them.

A deal was cut to allow both countries to get them out to avoid extreme embarrassment.

There are satellite photos of enormously long truck convoys taking all that junk to the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon.

So, President Bush knowingly gave up the right to say, "We found WMD's."

Our President showed real class and respect for France and Russia.

For this action our President deserves a huge thank you yet all he gets is, "He lied."

Most people are just too lazy to put out the effort to find the real truth.

The media desperately cling to their control over all the lazy people.

The educational system has been dumbing down children or teaching liberal ideas for far too long.

Turn your brains on and do the work it takes to figure out what the media is hiding.

It will be one of the best experiences of your life.

Greg Badger, too true.  There are plenty of images showing exactly what happened with the WMD's.  Why anybody who refuses to believe the biased liberal media about anything else just accepts the hogwash about no WMD's being found is beyond me.

There is a national threat here.  There is a reason to fight.  In fact, judging by some of the questions posed online by fellow al Qaida members to al Zawarhi regarding why they haven't attacked the U.S. again, there is definitely still a danger and imminent threat to all of us.

ConcernedMom,

The danger we face today is more insidious than AlQaida.

It is the danger from within.

It is Hillary Clinton and George Soros.

They are REAL mortal danger.

We have got to stop all the bickering, lock arms, and defeat them.

Agreed, Greg.  The problem to me is that there are so many real dangers right now.  If we ignore any of them, we are in great danger.

Soros can take his lousy butt back to Hungary if he hates us so much now that he made his fortune in this "Nazi" nation.

Hillary is wrong for so many reasons they can't be listed.  She and her kind need to be defeated if we are to stand a chance.

Radical Muslims want to destroy us.

Our border is wide open for terrorists to cross.  Not to mention the billions spent on the illegals every year.

George Bush and the Clintons are all carrying out their assignments given to them by the plutocracy. The invasion of Iraq is only a part of the One World assignment they have been given. No more, No less.

Greg,

Soros is an "enemy" to our way of life, for sure.  The whole American experiment has been a once in history epic.  We were (and for many remain) the envy of the world.  The reason is liberty.  Americans have had more liberty and freedom from government overbearance than any large society in history.  The enemies of liberty are our enemies and without sounding like a conspiracist, they are everywhere.  They are the people who crave power over all else and they are the people who naturally tend to rise to the top in politics, both government politics and office politics.  Soros is as dangerous as he is because he has so much money and is willing to spend it for power.  The Clintons are as dangerous as they are because they have so much blind ambition and are without moral restraint.  But the everyday well meaning do-gooders who want to tell us what we should do and shouldn't do are not to be ignored.

tencz57,

I'm sorry for offending you. My wife warns me someone might punch me in the nose.

I was responding to your comment, "What do you mean ,Soro's has us ?"

Haliburton may have all the money it wants. They put it right back into paychecks for men to support their families.

Arizona changed their laws and illegals are leaving in droves right now. We may have better ways to do this than a fence.

Arizona put up border cameras and caught lots of drug smugglers. THE LIBERALS HAD A HISSY FIT AND DEMANDED THEY ALL BE TURNED OFF.

My wife and I have a regimen we are faithful to every morning, first thing. We pray diligently for President Bush, Laura, their children, his cabinet and chief advisors. Specifically we pray they would be filled with wisdom and make only the best decisions. We pray they would have a deep and sincere love for each other.

The deep and sincere love for each other drives the media bonkers. You can go to the White House and see staff carrying Bibles. This is not a show. They are deadly serious to get the Word into themselves.

There are more prostitiutes in Washington D.C. than in the entire rest of the USA. George and Laura are complete outsiders to this and viciously hated.

I can tell you with the utmost confidence we have a President to be proud of. He makes mistakes but he can be reasoned with. This is far more than you can say for Clinton, Inc.

With this preface switch gears back to illegal immigration.

Bill Clinton exacerbated this mess purposely to Hillary's advantage. He wants us to argue about it so nothing gets done and Hillary comes in and gets all the credit and worse ALL THE VOTES SO NO CONSERVATIVE IS EVER AGAIN ELECTED.

They are very smart and devious people. WE HAVE TO WISE UP.

If some kind of bill to address amnesty gets done now the best Hillary can expect is an even vote split. I realize we do not want to bankrupt our country in the process or let the other related issues be a problem. I'm not sure how to do it but we sure need to.

Hillary will for sure bankrupt us.

Personally, I feel Haliburton is ripping off the American taxpayer.
