Refugees from Bhutan may not want to resettle in U.S.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Tom Tancredo (R-Littleton) today sent a letter to President Bush asking him to reconsider a decision to admit 10,000 refugees from Bhutan into the United States. This is the first step in a plan that would relocate as many as 60,000 of the refugees to the United States.
“While it seems clear that this displaced group meets the criteria of persecution on the basis of religion, it is less obvious that forcing them to relocate to the United States is the appropriate course of action at this time,” Tancredo said.
Recent news reports have indicated that many of the refugees do not want to relocate to the United States and prefer to return to their home of Bhutan.
“How can we expect prospective immigrants to assimilate if they have no interest in cutting their ties to the past?” Tancredo said. “And why would we undermine ongoing negotiations and efforts aimed at allowing these refugees to return home by asking them to move to somewhere they don’t want to go?”
Tancredo concluded, “The bottom line is that many people in this displaced group wish to return home, not settle in a third country.”
