Just because some people who weren't even around when Stephen Foster wrote "Florida's song" think the words lean toward racism, that wasn't even a word back then, the state song is about to be changed further stripping us of our heritage and history. The old song talked of "plantation life", etc. It was a song of the times and I'm fairly certain Foster didn't have racism in mind when he wrote the lyrics. Just another part of history being changed because a few idiots want it their way. Bye. Bye. America.

This political correctness has gone way too far. They are trying to change our heritage and history.  Are there any Americans who are willing to stand up to these nut cases?  It started back in the early 60's when one woman decided she didn't want prayer in schools.  Everyone was asleep and didn't think she could do it.  Well,,,,,,,,,,,We are still asleep and the PC crowd are moving forward to change America into what THEY decide it should be.

Couldn't have said it better. It is "citizenly correct" to oppose "political correctness". It my view, there is nothing correct in todays politics.

Is the State song " way down upon the Suwannee river ....  ?   If so, we sang that as kids in the midwest in the 60's.  I don't remember feeling any racial impulses either way at the time.

Can't these busy bodies just sign up for their H.O.A. and go around the neighborhood seeing if the garbage cans are out in the street too long ?  ( and write harsh notices if so )

This was a song we sang at school when I was a kid in California.  It's the same political correctness that wants to do away with that great old song that also wants to get rid of Huckleberry Finn from the school libraries.  There is no accounting for the historical context of these pieces of Americana.  What is wrong with people?  We are losing our history and our heritage for sure if this keeps up.

Al and Jessie and their ilk need to keep stoking the flames of racism to insure that they can still make money. Without race as an issue they have no jobs. What's next? God Bless America? Because it has the word GOD in the title?

Help!  Ever since I posted on this thread, I can't get this song out of my mind!  Then I remembered the little soft-shoe dance     Dancing  that went with it.......my family thinks I'm nuts!  (nothing new there)

Old Folks at Home (aka "Swanee River") Lyrics

Way down upon the Swanee River,
Far, far away
That's where my heart is turning ever
That's where the old folks stay
All up and down the whole creation,
Sadly I roam
Still longing for the old plantation
And for the old folks at home

Chorus:
All the world is sad and dreary everywhere I roam
Oh darkies, how my heart grows weary
Far from the old folks at home

What will they replace it with?  La Bamba?

"Had the people, during the Revolution, had a suspicion of any attempt to war against Christianity, that Revolution would have been strangled in its cradle... In this age, there can be no substitute for Christianity... That was the religion of the founders of the republic and they expected it to remain the religion of their descendants." Charles Carrol, signer of Declaration of Independence, framer of the Bill of Rights, delegate to the Constitutional Convention, U.S. Senator
