Normandale’s “Meditation Room” is Home to a Single Faith

Muslim Sex Segregated Prayer room in Minnesota Community College

by Katherine Kersten, Think Again blog, Star Tribune, December 17, 2007

Last week, I visited a Muslim place of worship. A schedule for Islam’s five daily prayers was posted at the entrance, near a sign requesting that shoes be removed. Inside, a barrier divided men’s and women’s prayer space, an arrow informed worshippers of the direction of Mecca, and literature urged women to cover their faces.

Sound like a mosque?

The place I’m describing is the “meditation room” at Normandale Community College, a 9,200-student public institution in Bloomington.

Until recently, the room was the school’s only usable racquetball court. College administrators converted the court into a meditation room when construction forced closure of the previous meditation room.

A row of chest-high barriers splits the room into sex-segregated sections. In the smaller, enclosed area for women sits a pile of shawls and head-coverings. Literature titled “Hijaab [covering] and Modesty” was prominently placed there, instructing women on proper Islamic behavior.

They should cover their faces and stay at home, it said, and their speech should not “be such that it is heard.”

“Enter into Islaam completely and accept all the rulings of Islaam,” the tract read in part. “It should not be that you accept what entertains your desires and leave what opposes your desires; this is from the manners of the Jews.”

“[T]he Jews and the Christians” are described as “the enemies of Allaah’s religion.” The document adds: “Remember that you will never succeed while you follow these people.”

A poster on the room’s door advertised a local lecture on “marriage from an Islamic perspective,” with “useful tips for marital harmony from the Prophet’s … life.” Other fliers invited students to join the Normandale Islamic Forum, or participate in Ramadan celebrations.

One thing was missing from the meditation room: evidence of any faith but Islam. No Bible, no crucifix, no Torah.

Yet my 11-year-old isn't even allowed a moment of silence at her school for fear of offending some nut job atheist.

I don't hear anyone calling for the "separation of church and state" in this case. Discrimination against Christians is evident and there is no outrage about that either - what's going on? Luke-warm Christianity!!!

I wonder if this has anything to do with Mr. "I'm not running as a muslim, I' mrunning as an American" Keith Ellison. Ellison is the first muslim elected to congress, winning a seat for MN.

Mr. Ellison refused to be sworn in with a bible and was allowed to use a koran for his swearing in.

MN. was also one of the first states to allow the foot baths in their airports for the muslim cabbies who needed to wash their feet before prayer.

Watch this state and it's emerging muslim influence. Personally I think it's pretty scary.

Outrageous.....folks it is time to start PRAYING in public! I would also LOVE to have a group of Christians gather outside of the offices of CAIR and have a "sit in" with CHRISTIAN PRAYERS! OUR COUNTRY, OUR RULES! The Wahhabi DID NOT settle this country, they did not shed blood for their freedom on THIS SOIL!

To CAIR.......LECH TEZ DAYEN!  Shove that in your turban!

If we say anything we are the biggot's. Will to bad I want Our prayer room and I'll find a good law too. To help us. Stand and be counted all you whom are for Yeshua {Jesus}. Let your voice be a thunderous voice. I will no longer take it. I am not a biggot. My rights are being violated.

i've been saying this for some time now . "Most Christians are Weak and far to the left".  Fact : they often pick the wrong battle for "Headlines". Farwell ,Robinson ,Dobson all have Their own agendas , imo none are good for the Greater good of the country .  Why don't these powerful groups back the president and put a sword in Islam ? you have nothing to lose except the offical your cartel is backing

A Muslim prayer room in a public college makes me angry

What's "Reverend" Huckabee's take on this?  Anyone know?

I'm in no way defending Mr Ellison or his religion.  However, in defense of accuracy:

I sent a letter of protest to my congressional leaders and recieved a reply from my representative.  She said all reps are required to take the Oath together as a group using nothing to swear on. This is the official swearing in.   Then, if an individual chooses, he or she may take the same oath using the Bible or a book or object of their choice.  Most choose a second swearing in on the Bible, a few choose other books or even an object, a few have no second swearing in.  Mr. Ellison I believe was the first to choose the Koran.    This to me is somewhat less offensive than the original version.

I have read (can't remember the source) that Muslims will take over a country any way they can: by sheer numbers, by armed force, or legally by  being elected to office. Already we have one Representative and are considering a person of Muslim background as President of the United States, the highest office in the land.

Simply,The above statement in bold is the original version.  To me this implies that Mr. Ellison defied the required swearing in on a Bible and instead special rules for him alone were made for him  to be sworn in on the Koran.  Whereas actually, according to my Rep , he was never required to use a Bible and rules already existed for anyone to choose alternatives,

It's not only MN & IN it is in every state.  VA has a large school there training Muslims.  The internet is doing training to convert Christians to Islam, I watched it Sunday because I was curious.  They are going to outnumber Americans I think I heard there were 3500 cells working in the US.  That's what scary about Obama.

Our tax dollars are really at work for everyone except the Americans.  What's going on you would think they are all on drugs the decisions they're making.

Thanks, LitehouseBrite.  Somebody should write him and tell him the joke is on him.  The particular Koran he was sworn in on was the one Thomas Jefferson bought.  Jefferson bought it for a specific reason.  That reason was to study the Koran to be able to deal with the Moslem pirates which were capturing our merchant ships and holding the American crews for ransom.  We paid many hundreds of thousands of dollars maybe more to them (at one time it was a 10th of our whole budget).

Anyway Jefferson studied the book then proceeded to kick the Moslems butt not once but when they broke the first treaty, twice, a second time.  To the Shores of Tripolee.  Jefferson used the book to help win the two Barbary Wars against the Moslems.

Mr Ellison actually made a fool out of himself by being such an idiot.  Wouldn't you agree?

I had read this before and I do think Mr. Ellison had the tables turned on him.  It is nice to have the last laugh once in a while, isn't it?

Does this college have a Christian chapel? If it doesn't, I would demand one if I were a student!

If I hear one more pro-muslim thing coming out of Minnesota, I vow never to visit that state again!!!
