WILKES-BARRE — Less than four minutes after former Mexican President Vicente Fox took the stage at F.M. Kirby Center Monday night, he called Mexican immigrants working in the United States his “heroes,” and applauded their work.

It set the tone for his speech, which he has followed in TV interviews and book tours the last three weeks he has spent in the United States. Although Fox touched on several topics, including the Iraq War, during the 38-minute speech he focused on immigration policy and reviving Latin American countries’ economies with open trade and normalization of a workforce.

“They came here with their pockets empty and their heads full of dreams, looking for their American dreams,” Fox said of immigrants to the United States.

Fox spoke as part of Wilkes University’s fourth annual Outstanding Leaders Forum. In what amounted to a lecture on the virtues of open-market capitalism in a changing global economy, Fox’s speech relied heavily on the same points made in his recently published book, “Revolution of Hope,” even using similar anecdotes. He called for shared agreements between countries in the Americas, creating an open work force.

His comments drew applause from the crowd three times, twice about immigration reform and once when he called for a U.S. withdraw from Iraq, equating it to a parent that has to let a child grow up.

Fox referenced New York Times’ columnist Thomas Friedman, calling “the world flat” and saying that NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) worked well for the U.S., Canada and Mexico to create jobs, even if American manufacturing jobs were exported. He told the audience that open borders would create economic prosperity for the U.S., an “aging nation” that will need workers.

He called for Congress to handle immigration reform, because without reform it left “open spaces” that would be filled by people preying on hate. He didn’t mention Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta or that city’s illegal immigration act directly during the speech or his 20-minute news conference before the event, but he discussed “local communities” forced to handle the immigration issue.

“It’s a federal issue and should be addressed by Congress,” he said. “When you do not act and you do not meet problems, you leave empty spaces.”

Fox called for current immigrants in the United States with jobs to be allowed to stay as long as they worked and told audience members that immigrants are “hard working” and “not terrorists.”

“I am not for illegality, but these people came here because someone offered them a job,” Fox said. “They love this nation, they contribute to the betterment of this nation.”

Ten minutes into his speech Fox referenced plans in the U.S. to build a wall along the Mexican-American border. He would use the term “wall” at least 20 times during his speech and called such actions deplorable.

“I cannot understand why a wall is being built,” Fox said. “What is the fear in this nation? Who is this nation trying to isolate from? Why the inconsistency? When President Reagan comes in Berlin and shouts ‘Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall ...’ The threat to this nation is not immigrants. The threat to this nation is isolation. Instead of building walls, we should be building bridges. Bridges of understanding. Bridges of trade. Bridges of love.”

Some come with their pockets full of drugs and weapons too, Fox.  What a piece of work he is.  Of course he loves the illegals, they send all their dollars back to Mexico.

He is probablly here illegally. I doubt very much that he has a valid passport or visa. They should arrest him on federal charges for illegal immigration, and while they are at it, charge him with sedition. All he is trying to do is stir up the Hispanics even more to accomplish his agenda. He doesn't care any more for them that he does for the United States citizens. If he did, he would keep his sorry ass in Mexico, and fix their system and not worry about ours. It is people like him and Calderon that is the reason for the illegals being here in the first place. If they, along with our president and congress would do the jobs they were elected to do, there would not be a work force problem in either country.

Wilkes University should be closed down, for treason and sedition. They are upholding these clowns over their own people. If this is an Outstanding Leaders Forum, what are they doing bringing people like Fox in to speak? What has he done that is so outstanding?

In part I do agree with the former Mexican Presidente.  We do need to build bridges and remain allies.  I think he misunderstands the American sentiment though.  We've reached our fill of illegal immigrants.  That option is no longer going to be tolerated.  If Mexico is sincere about their intentions then they need to make it clear to their population that the US is still friendly and we still welcome them, but they must now do it legally.  The "free lunch" is now gone.  The "wall" "fence" or whatever you call it is not to keep those that wish to come here legally out, but those that would exploit us, or desire our demise. Ergo there is no isolationism at all.  Times have changed and those that want to come to Los Estados Unidos must now do so legally.  It's really that simple.  Yet as Vincente alluded too, we too need not hate someone just because they are Mexican descent, and likewise he needs to understand that walls or fences are erected when someone is trying to kill our people.  Mr. Fox allow us as Americans to outright own properties in Mexico.  Allow small businesses to establish themselves in Mexico.  This will do more for Mexico than trying to dump your undereducated and poor population onto us.  Think about that Mr. Fox.  You'd see a boom in the economy of Mexico that would rival China.  In fact Mr. Fox why not annex Mexico to the US and become part of the United States.  This would resolve just about everything. Disban the Mexican military make each state in Mexico just another in the United States.  Do so over a period of let's say 50 years.  Do you think you're people would agree to that?  I doubt it.  As would ours not fully agree.

Hmmm!  Fox, the Administration, many in the Republican Party and the Democrat Congress have one very interesting thing in common.  None want interior enforcement (i. e. employer sanctions as spelled out in IRCA 1986).  One the few exceptions is Tom Tancredo, for example.  Business as usual otherwise.

We don't need new "comprehensive" immigration laws. We need widespread, well funded enforcement of existing immigration law, i. e. IRCA 1986. http://www.oig.lsc.gov/legis/irca86.htm ANYTHING ELSE IS JUST A BIG CHARADE! I don't think so, they came here to demonstrate in our streets, take over our towns, REFUSE to learn English, fly THEIR flag over the top of ours, sing our anthem in Spanish, use false and stolen ID"s to get jobs they are not legally able to have, invade our schools and take our social and health benefits without paying for them, sell drugs, rob people, rape people, that HARDLY sounds like good people with "love" in their hearts!!   They KNOW they are here illegally, that is enough, what is that rule, ignorance of the law is NO excuse???  And they are not ignorant of the "crossing the border to get a job" laws!

If you have to hyphenate your race--you are NOT an American!! This from a French-German-English-Irish-AMERICAN! See how silly this can become?
