Thompson’s Plan to Fight Illegal Immigration

From Thompson campaign:

Thompson Announces Plan to Secure Border, Enforce Existing Immigration Laws

Senator Fred Thompson today unveiled a comprehensive border security and immigration enforcement proposal that would make America safer by increasing security at our nation’s borders, enforcing our country’s existing laws to reduce the incentive for illegal immigration and streamlining the legal immigration process.

“A country that cannot secure its borders will not remain a sovereign nation and you cannot have national security without border security,” said Thompson.  “It’s not only necessary for any meaningful immigration reform, but border security plays a key role in both the interdiction of illegal drugs and in defending America against terrorist threats. Weak borders allow terrorists and smugglers, as well as millions of illegal aliens, easy entrance to the United States.”

Thompson’s two-pronged plan, which can be found in its entirety at www.fred08.com, is based on two principles: Securing the Border and Enforcing the Law, and Improving the Legal Immigration Process.

Highlights of the proposal include:

•       No Amnesty:   Amnesty undermines U.S. law and policy, rewards bad behavior, and is unfair to the millions of immigrants who follow the law and are awaiting legal entry into the United States.

•       Enforce Existing Federal Laws:  Enforce the laws Congress has already enacted to prevent illegal aliens from unlawfully benefiting from their presence in the country including:

A.      End Sanctuary Cities by cutting off discretionary federal grant funds as appropriate to any community that, by law, ordinance, executive order, or other formal policy directs its public officials not to comply with the provisions of 8 USC 1373 and 8 USC 1644, which prohibit any state or local government from restricting in any way communications with the Department of Homeland Security “regarding the immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of an alien in the United States.”

B.      Deny discretionary Federal education grants as appropriate to public universities that violate federal law by offering in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens without also offering identical benefits to United States citizens, regardless of whether or not they live in the state, as required by 8 USC 1623.

C.      Deny discretionary Federal grants as appropriate to states and local governments that violate federal law by offering public benefits to illegal aliens, as prohibited by 8 USC 1621(a).

•       Increased Border Security: Doubling Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents handling interior enforcement, increasing the Border Patrol to at least 25,000 agents, and increasing detention space to incarcerate illegal aliens we arrest rather than letting them go with a promise to show up later for legal proceedings against them.

•       Attrition through Enforcement:  Reduce the number of illegal aliens through increased enforcement against unauthorized alien workers and their employers.  Without illegal employment opportunities available, fewer illegal aliens will attempt to enter the country, and many of those illegally in the country now likely will return home.  This course of action offers a reasonable alternative to the false choices currently proposed to deal with the 12 million or more aliens already in the U.S. illegally: either arrest and deport them all, or give them all amnesty.

•       Maximize Legal Immigration Program Efficiency:  Reduce the backlogs and streamline the process for immigrants and employers who seek to follow the law.  Also, simplify and expedite the application processes for temporary visas.  Caps for any category of temporary work visa would be increased as appropriate, if it could be demonstrated that there are no Americans capable and willing to do the jobs.

•       Modernize Immigration Law/Policy:  Change the nature of our legal immigration system to welcome immigrants who can be economic contributors to our country and are willing to learn the English language and reduce the scope of chain migration by giving family preference in the allocation of lawful permanent resident status only to spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens, and no one else (no siblings, no parents, no adult children, etc.).

•       English as Official Language:  Make English the official language of the U.S. to promote assimilation and legal immigrants’ success, and require English proficiency in order for any foreign person to be granted lawful permanent resident status.

•       Preference for American Military Service:  Place those foreign persons who are lawfully present in the country and who serve honorably in the Armed Forces of the United States on a faster, surer track to U.S. citizenship.

That is a sound and reasonable plan.  I hope he talks about it at every campaign stop.   Thanks Melinda.  TG

Thanks Tommy.  I was impressed with it.  It is a well thought out plan IMO.

Great post Melinda TN! The one above is my personal favorite....

And I am also VERY PLEASED that Fred is strongly advocating ENGLISH AS OUR OFFICIAL LANGUAGE.

He WILL take the bull by the horns won't he Melinda?!

Yep BTB he will.  He mentioned several things that none of the other candidates have brought up in great detail.  He also put it in writing.

Some people don't realize that Fred was laying out parts of his plan for the illegal's situation long before the others.  Nobody would take him seriously because he wasn't "announced" at the time.

The proof of the pie is in the internal enforcement plan and that is where Tennessee Fred reflects the Simon and Garfunkel classic, The Sounds of Silence. The devil is in the lack of any kind of policy which would detail a plan for what he plans to do to support enforcing even existing law in the interior of our country.

He is not serious on the subject and is pandering to voters and then he will follow the dictates of big money by following the CFR roadmap (he is a member of the CFR) to forming the Empire of Canamerimex.

Glenn Beck covered this merger on his show tonight. It was titled Liberty in Peril. Glenn is firmly on board with the majority on these forums. I thank those who argue vehemantly against this notion because eventually people who are on these forums long enough look into it and discover the bitter truth just as most of us here on Fire Society already have.

If one group is effectively in control of national governments and multinational corporations; promotes world government through control of media, foundation grants, and education; and controls and guides the issues of the day; then they control most options available. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), and the financial powers behind it, have done all these things, and promote the "New World Order", as they have for over seventy years.

To be paranoid means to believe in delusions of danger and persecution. If the danger is real, and the evidence credible, then it cannot be delusional. To ignore the evidence, and hope that it CANNOT be true, is more an evidence of mental illness.

Melinda, I just gotta say, all of this is things Tom has been fighting for since 1999.  Much of it stalled in the Senate Judiciary Committee where Fred sat for the first 4 years Tom was in the House.

All of it is right out of Tom's campaign since April 2, 2007.

I can't wait for Alan Colmes and Geraldo Rivera to get in Fred's face and call him  "racist" the way they do Tom.

Thank you, JW and Bobbie.  Copycatting, but it was to be expected, and not a surprise.

Definitely a well thought out plan, because it was Tom's from way back.  Betcha Alan and Geraldo remain "mute"  on the subject.

Thanks for posting this Melinda. It looks like Fred has a great plan. I don't care if he copied the plan or part of the plan from someone else. If he is doing what is best for our country who cares where he got the idea.

The problem is there is no way to know that "what he is doing is best for our country" because frankly nobody knows what he will do; he doesn't hold any official position of power right now, Fred's record hasn't been very good in the past and Tom T. does already hold a position and has actually been in the trenches already.

This country can hardly afford to wait until a president is elected so he can go back on campaign promises/plans for whatever reason they give later.  We've had too many put over on us the last six years to suffer more of the same in the future.

I'll be watching to see what steps Fred takes next in support of "his" plan.

I should have said " Fred's record in the Senate on immigration issues hasn't been very good" above, to clarify.

Saying and actually doing are two entirely different things.

Efforts he made, or failed to make, while a Senator has set our country up for the situation we are in today.

Voted to strip legal reforms from 1996 billVoted in favor of chain migration in 1996

Voted for a foreign worker bill with no anti-fraud measures in 2000.

As Committee member, produced H-1B doubling bill in 1998

Nearly doubled H-1B foreign high-tech workers in 1998

Voted in committee against including worker safeguards in H-1B bill in 1998

Voted to allow firms to lay off Americans to make room for foreign workers in 1998

Tried to kill voluntary pilot programs for workplace verification in 1996

I for one am encouraged that Fred "CFR" Thompson is evolving on his position with regards to illegal immigration in such a way that better serves the interests of the nation.   While at this point it does not mean that he is a leader on the issue or that he deserves more campaign support it is nonetheless encouraging to have someone join the anti-illegal immigration camp who gets so many opportunities to speak in the MSM.  Hopefully he will take advantage of this and spread the message.

Like Mitt Romney becoming pro-life, I welcome Fred Thompson into the the anti-illegal immigration fold.  It takes a strong character to publically evolve in your perception and position on such a major issue.  But it takes tangible acts to earn support for it.

I am willing to extend my hand and support whatever good works he shall lead.  However, I think we must not become over excited about this prospect because to date he has not done anything of tangible benefit.  It will take time for that to occur.  Also, we must fully evaluate the details of his position.  The following comments he made just a few months ago will serve to remind us of just how much he has shifted his position and make it clear that this is a major change he has to incorporate in his political persona.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b81K03dMc98

(go to 3:00 if you only want to hear him speak).

I look forward to seeing how much attention he will give the illegal immigration issue going forward and how he represents the position he has  taken when it comes time to stand front and center against the open borders lobby.

For my money there is nothing better than the original, Rep Tom Tancredo....

Sheriff meets with Thompson; picks Romney

On Tuesday, Collier County Sheriff Don Hunter sat down with Fred Thompson to talk illegal immigration on the morning the GOP presidential candidate rolled out his reform plan.

Today, just two days later, Hunter officially endorsed Thompson's closest rival, Mitt Romney.

The Massachusetts governor's campaign has talked to the sheriff for some time, but didn't get the OK from Hunter to announce the endorsement until late Wednesday.

If Hunter gave Thompson a chance when they met, it appears he didn't past the test.

Read the news release below.

COLLIER COUNTY SHERIFF DON HUNTER ENDORSES
GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY FOR PRESIDENT

Boston, MA – Governor Mitt Romney today announced that Collier County Sheriff Don Hunter has endorsed his candidacy for President of the United States.  Sheriff Hunter joins a strong and growing team in Southwest Florida led by U.S. Congressman Connie Mack (R-FL), a Chair of Governor Romney's Florida Statewide Steering Committee.

"Sheriff Hunter is a respected leader in the Florida law enforcement community and has been on the forefront of working to curb illegal immigration in the state. I am pleased to have his support," said Governor Romney. "We agree that illegal immigration is a critical issue for our country. We need to ensure our existing immigration laws are enforced and end "sanctuary city" policies that encourage illegal immigration. Our focus should be on securing the border, implementing a tamperproof employment verification system and ensuring there is no special pathway to citizenship for those that come here illegally."

"I have had an opportunity to look at the records of other candidates, and it is clear that Governor Romney is the candidate with the most impressive record of accomplishment in the public and private sectors and the strongest record of enforcing our immigration laws," said Sheriff Hunter. "As Governor of Massachusetts, he worked with the federal government to allow Massachusetts state troopers to enforce federal immigration laws, vetoed in-state tuition at public colleges and universities for illegal immigrants, promoted English immersion in the education system and opposed driver's licenses for illegal immigrants. I am proud to endorse Governor Romney for President of the United States and know his conservative leadership will steer our country in the right direction."

Did anyone notice in the last debate how Fred kept emphasizing 'trade' and how critical it was to us???  Or was it just my perception.  That alone makes me very nervous.

I did not notice, speakenglish, but after the first 25 minutes I did not pay much attention to what any of the "top tier" was saying, I only kept the tv on to keep track of how many times everyone was allowed to speak.
