Students at a Maine middle school will now have access to birth-control pills and patches at their school health center.

The Portland school committee recently approved a new policy, which will make King Middle School the first middle school in Maine to offer a wide range of birth-control options to students. The policy was put into place because of an alleged explosion in student pregnancies.

Mike Heath, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine, says that the school is stepping into a role the parents should be playing.

"This is coming about because of the vulnerable young people who should be having their parents being forced to become more involved with their children," the family advocate shares. "Instead of that happening, the health clinic is taking the role of the parent."

It is too early at this point, says Heath, to say what they are going to do in order to fight the new policy.

"I need to meet with our leaders and see what the possibilities are," he says. "I hope that there are enough concerned parents who want to get together and learn more and do something about this."

The contraceptive plan will be offered by city health officials, and students must get parental permission in order to get treated. However, under Maine law, students are not required to inform parents about the services they receive.

Now is the time for parents to put their foot down and tell the public schools to stay the he** out of their family values!  What is going on in this country that they would put children on birth control?  Many of the girls that they are talking about (11 years old) haven't even started menstruating yet!  What are they going to give them for advice on this med?  Are they going to tell them what the hormones might do to their bodies?  Are the going to tell them that they may end up with a blood clot that will kill them?  What is going on when parents will let the schools take over their authority as parents?  What happens when and "if" something like a blood clot kills one of these children?  Are the schools going to take responsibility for the death?  After all, they are the ones that issued birth control pills to the child without the consent of the parent?  Wake up people, it's time to take your schools back and your children!!!  For pity sakes, grow up and behave like adults!  These so called know it all's are destroying the childhood of so many of the children of this country!   They should be sued!  I just want to lash out at the parents and tell them to stop being lead around by this so called public school system!  I would pull my child out of the schools  and home school them.  No way would I allow them to corrupt my child, and that is all this is about!  What happened to parents teaching their children modesty, morals, and respect for one another?
