Perry backs Giuliani despite differences

Wed Oct 17, 9:34 PM ET

Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani won the endorsement of Texas Gov. Rick Perry Wednesday, despite their differences on abortion rights.

Perry said that his biggest concern had been Giuliani's support for abortion rights but that he was satisfied the former New York mayor would appoint judges who view the issue conservatively.

"The one (issue) that I wanted to hear him give me an answer and look me right in my eyes was that issue of who can I expect, what type of individual can I expect on the Supreme Court," Perry said at a news conference with Giuliani.

"He clearly said ... you can look for people like Scalia and Roberts and Alito. Let me tell you, I can live with that," Perry said, referring to conservative Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts.

Perry said when he buys a pickup truck, he doesn't rule any out simply because they have an option he doesn't like. He said the war on terrorism is the campaign's overriding issue and Giuliani is best-equipped to lead a country at war.

The Texas governor, who accompanied Giuliani on a campaign trip to Iowa later in the day, said, "Mayor Giuliani is not the enemy. Rudy Giuliani is a culture warrior."

Giuliani, who is addressing social conservative voters this weekend in Washington, said he wants conservatives to focus on areas where he agrees with them.

"I'm not going to get every vote," he said. "The idea is going to be that there's enough we agree about and enough we're facing — foreign threats and domestic problems — that it may just be if they think about it, that I'm the best candidate."

"What I really want is a relationship in which we respect each other, even if we disagree," Giuliani said.

In Iowa, he courted conservatives activists with a free-market pitch for the nation's health care system and ridicule of leading Democratic contenders.

"If we do Hillarycare in this country, where are the Canadians going to go for their health care?" Giuliani asked. Speaking before about 400 people at Drake University in Des Moines, he argued that the health care system should be treated like any other business, with tax incentives and free-market principles to drive costs down.

Giuliani said universal health care proposals make an appealing case, but "the reality is, it's a nice promise to make, but you will be misleading people."

Perry was also to attend two later town-hall style meetings in Iowa, appearances apparently aimed at reassuring conservatives who might be leery of Giuliani because of his support of abortion rights and past stands on gay rights and gun control.

In Washington, outside the hotel where the news conference was held, Perry refused to stop to answer questions and relied on security and others to block an Associated Press reporter who was trying to question him. When the reporter shouted questions at Perry, she was grabbed and threatened with jail.

"Mayor Giuliani and Governor Perry took questions from reporters twice on Wednesday; first at an open press conference and then on a conference call with Texas media," said Perry's spokesman, Robert Black. "Unfortunately, this particular reporter chose not to participate, and instead chose to bull-rush the mayor and governor as they left the building."

bob please do not brag on Perry, giving him a swelled head. He just is not that good.

Yesterday i spoke with a truck driver that said he does not like driving near the border as the drivers are all crazy. Also said that the non existant super highway sure is having a lot of work being done.

Perry is a liar and a cheat, he lied to Texans before the election and than called us stupid afterward, Rudy is for illegals, he did okay after 911, but I remember how he handled other issues in his life, no thanks, to Perry or Rudy.

Help me out here, is actual work taking place building the Texas Trans Corridor?  I though it was still in the planning phase and the big fight was over what route to take along with who to kick off their land after giving the peons some shut-up money.

Aren't they waiting for Guiliani to be elected President so he can help his lawfirm working on the NAFTA SUPERHIGHWAY by issuing some executive orders regarding this matter?

I am with Blaze on this one, I would never vote for Rudy.

Am I behind the times.....

Well, who you gonna vote for if it between Hillary and Guiliani??????

Hillary is the devil...and will really make a liberal/socialistic mess...

Not sure about Guiliani...but nothing is looking better so far, as most the hopefuls, are just that ...names are too unknown to really have a chance..IMHO.

Perry is a liberal in a conservative's clothing.  Marcy is exactly correct.  Perry told bald-face lies just to get elected then insulted the very people who elected him after he won the prize.  One of the radio hosts I listen to during my afternoon commute (J.D. Wells on KLIF) has been trying to get Perry to come on his show and has called his office over 50 times without so much as a courtesy call back from Perry's offices.  But the other day, while J.D. was talking with a Latino columnist from California, it was found out that the columnist was invited to Perry's offices for a face-to-face meeting.  Perry will talk with the liberals because it's easy, he believes in their causes, but is a scrawny-legged chicken when it comes to facing those who challenge him on important issues like his involvement in the superhighway and illegal immigration.

You sure ARE behind the times, SovereignMan!! Just kidding. Smile

TTC is already under construction, underway, and will be hard to stop. The TX Legislature couldn't stop Perry from implimenting it. Only the People of Texas and Congress can stop it, and unfortunately, only a handful or two of House members want to stop it and Texans aren't marching. Bad weather and a bad economy are keeping the protests down in Texas, IMHO and winter is coming, never a good time for protesting.

The most up-to-date sites in TTC happenings is:

Sal is my neighbor.  He is mostly interested in the tolling going on in Austin and central Texas, but is all over this whole TTC mess.  He and the AustinTollParty.com are not only fighting toll roads on already built and paid roads, but offering lower cost alternatives where congestion is a problem.  I don't agree with everything he posts, but he is definitely on top of it all.

I just have to believe that there is a special place in hell for Perry. He has raped the state of Texas.

To change the direction of this country, you must change the people who you have entrusted. Do not stand by and let others tell you what is good for your country. Vote these carpet baggers out of office.

someone asked "why dont all you people get together in Texas and recall that traitor. I'm not sure we can, and other than radio shows taking him on, I really dont see anyone else taking him on(newspapers, other officals)I do recall when he tried to mandate about the vaccine being given to girls 11 or 13 against cervical cancer, I think the legislative branch pushed him back, You know I never see him on the news, or on the radio, talking about Texas, to the people, I think hes a snob, He reminds me an awful lot like our Senate. God help us if Rudy gets elected, puts Perry in a job, and Hutchison is govenor of Texas, might as well hand the keys to Texas over to mexico now. We will be over-run.

How hard IS it to get this guy outta here?  His backing of Rudy is the nail in the coffin - he's a traitor and a liberal... part of the NAU package....

Here's yesterday's Houston Chronicle article that made me GAG (bold and bracketed emphasis and comments mine):

Oct. 18, 2007, 1:19PM
Perry's VP chances could ride on Giuliani
Governor endorses Republican presidential candidate

AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry's endorsement Wednesday of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani for the Republican presidential nomination sparked renewed speculation that Perry is seeking a spot on the ticket as a vice-presidential candidate [YEP - can't run Texas, so let's move on up - typical politician].

"I would say that Gov. Perry is at the top of everyone's list [they must be delusional], my own and any other Republican nominee," Giuliani said in a conference call with reporters. "He's governor of one of our largest states. He's a very successful governor [WHAT? Rudy - "great insight" - can't vote for anyone whose insight is THAT BAD]."

When asked about the speculation, Perry was quick to say, "I won't consider that." [B.S. - B.S. - B.S. But he also declined to say whether that meant he would turn down a vice-presidential slot on the ticket if it is offered.

"I have a really, really good job. I love my job. As a matter of fact, I just had to move out of the mansion, and I'm not looking for another move," [B.S. - B.S. - B.S.said Perry, referring to the remodeling of the Governor's Mansion.

Perry's endorsement of Giuliani was unusual because the conservative governor differs with Giuliani on numerous issues, including Perry's opposition to abortion and support for gun rights.  [BUT, I'll do any suck-up I need to do to get ahead - conservative principles don't really matter if they get in the way of my advancement].

Perry downplayed their differences on abortion, saying Giuliani would appoint "strict constructionists" to the U.S. Supreme Court who would have an impact on limiting abortions. [And we should believe that why?].

Perry said a presidency under Democrat Hillary Clinton would lead to court appointments "that would cause people to wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night."

Perry also said Giuliani understands there are differences on what kind of firearm limits might work in New York and not work in Texas or other places.

Perry made it clear that one of his biggest reasons for backing Giuliani is a belief that he can win the presidency [AND I might get to be Vice President - oh boy, oh boy, oh boy].

"The mayor knows how to lead. He knows how to get results, and he knows how to win," Perry said.

But the endorsement definitely represents a case of politics making for strange bedfellows.

Giuliani is taking support from a governor who was re-elected with 39 percent of the vote and has lost support among his Republican base over the past year. Conservative Perry is signing on with the most moderate candidate in the Republican field.

'Tired of Texans'

"Texans supporting the mayor of New York City? Get a rope," [AMEN!] joked Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, who is backing Republican Fred Thompson for president.

Thompson this week announced Patterson and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott as his state chairs.

"As far as helping Rudy carry Texas in the primary, this is of no impact. The governor is an unpopular governor," Patterson said, noting that Perry has been in office since 2000, "wearing out his welcome."[AMEN!]

Patterson said he could see why Giuliani might want Perry on the ticket with him, though. He said Perry's conservative image would help Giuliani in the South and West. Patterson said he thought Perry would hurt Giuliani in the rest of the country.

"The nation is tired of Texans, period. It makes no difference who it is," Patterson said.

John Weaver, a GOP consultant who was a key consultant on Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign until earlier this year, said the endorsement will be a great boost nationally for both Perry and Giuliani.

Weaver said Perry's endorsement gives "air cover" to other conservatives who might want to throw their support behind Giuliani for president: "Rick becomes a validation for other conservatives."

For Perry, joining Giuliani's campaign will give the governor the opportunity to become a major national surrogate speaker, Weaver said. He noted that Perry is about to ascend to a leadership role in the Republican Governors Association. [Just what we need]

"It gives you another vehicle other than the Republican Governors Association to get out and about outside the borders of Texas," Weaver said. [So he can neglect us Texans even more?]

Weaver said the early presidential primaries make it unlikely the nomination battle will still be alive when Texans vote March 4. He said the nomination likely will be all but settled in multistate voting Feb. 5.

Cathie Adams, president of the Texas Eagle Forum, a conservative political organization, said she is "disappointed" that Perry would endorse a candidate who is as moderate as Giuliani.

'The rest of the story'

Adams said that is especially true after Perry last month told California Republicans to shun candidates who don't adhere to the party's principles, including opposition to abortion. [BUT, I'll suck-up personally to anybody that might help me get ahead]

"He (Perry) was throwing them red meat," Adams said. "But they don't know the rest of the story."

Republican consultant Mark Sanders worked for Democrat Tony Sanchez against Perry in the 2002 election and for independent Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn in 2006. He said Perry's 39 percent victory in 2006 will keep him off any Republican presidential ticket. [I certainly hope so]

"I don't know of anybody in the presidential field who is seriously considering Rick Perry as a vice-presidential candidate," Sanders said. "He doesn't bring much to the table." [AMEN!] [AMEN!] [AMEN!]

r.g.ratcliffe@chron.com

Other than my comments above, I don't have any strong feelings regarding Rick Perry!!  Thumbs Down

YOU can start a recall petition , check with the state for details . It does not have to be a big organization , just requires a bunch of signatures , and having lived in Texas for well over a dozen years I know what the people there will do when mad as hell . You could find many volunteers to stand in front of malls and grocery stores and sign them up , might cause some big lines though as so many are fed up with him .
