Oct. 10, 2007 -- Check your freezer for Banquet or generic store-brand turkey or chicken not-ready-to-eat pot pies with "P-9" printed on the side of the package.
If you have any those pot pie products, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) says to throw them out or don't eat them as health officials investigate a multi-state salmonella outbreak.
Google Banquet Pot Pies. The url is a yard long.

I know about tinyurl.com. I was holding something else on my clipboard when I saw this information and did not want to lose it.

ICE really needs to check out these plants where this happens along with the health dept's. A chicken plant here in Alabama had 160 workers test positive for TB. When dealing with food our government needs to get serious.

It is unbelievable how many home grown food products have been recalled just this year.

Don't a lot of illegals work in chicken farms, meat packing places etc. and are known carriers of TB? I know it is difficult to buy quality produce, lettuce, tomatoes etc because of competition from farms that use cheap labor to flood the markets.
Wonder what it will be like when U.S. chickens are sent to China for various processed food products? No thank you.
It was pointed out to me some time back USDA is considering getting those chickens over to China.
OMG, have you seen the animals in their open air markets in china? Cramped up in small cages by the dozens, hundreds of different types animals, including cats and dogs, for sale to eat, filty conditions--unbelievable...and to think some of our food products are coming in from china now and our elected officials still won't pass the funds to have them inspected or labeled with country of origin. But, if the chickens come from the USA and are sent to china for processing, does that mean the country of origin is still the usa??
I think CNN is having one of their special investigation reports (possibly Anderson Cooper???) either this week or maybe it was last week about the food in china and how it is kept/handled. Makes my skin crawl....
I love chicken, but can start to pass on it if it is not going to be processed in this country, or maybe we should all start raising our own, when I was a kid we had chickens and killed/plucked them for dinner on may occaision!
If you have to hyphenate your race--you are NOT an American!! This from a French-German-English-Irish-AMERICAN! See how silly this can become?
If you can raise them yourself they are a world of difference than what we generally get at the grocery stores. My stomach has sort of been turned by the whole chicken thing, not just because some of the bigger producers are using certain types of labor but after watching how chickens are raised on large scale, the cramped , filthy conditions in which they are raised and the means by which they are slaughtered on a large scale ...yuk!
I hope to live on my small farm full time before too many years and pasture raise chickens. Also plan to build an egg mobile. I don't consume a lot of eggs but I can say a chicken egg from a chicken that has been eating grasshoppers and various natural grasses and insects with no antibotics in its diet is a whole lot better egg and a safer egg to consume. Same goes for the meat. Antibotics are given to commercial chickens because they live in such cramped quarters, have little fresh air and literally die one on top of the other. It is disgusting how the birds are raised before they are prepared for our dinner tables.
Meanwhile about the best I can do is purchase organic chicken from stores that carry them. No guarantee I suppose against salmonella but generally the source of such chickens is way more healthy than the commercial types. The thing to do in order to protect ourselves is to participate in local markets if they are available. I know there are clubs in my area that one can join and choose fresh produce from local growers. If we can just keep the Feds and corporate agricultural entities out of our lives in order to do so.
As the lyrics go in an old Bellamy Brothers song, " So he grows a little garden in the back yard by the fence He's consuming what he's growing nowadays in self defense". Those lyrics are a long time ago. Somehow I cannot help but think they are any less true today.

The paper didn't decribe the infected workers, but I'd put money on them being illegal. State health departments and ICE need to get involved with keeping our food supply safe.

Before you throw away those pot pies, think about it! There are probably some hard working, needy, high family value illegals in your neighborhood who would really appreciate the donation.
