The nation’s number one Democrat, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, is defending the banning of religious references on certificates issued by the Architect of the Capitol.
An Eagle Scout asked that a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol be sent to his grandfather, along with a certificate bearing the message: “In honor of my grandfather Marcel Larochelle, and his dedication and love of God, country, and family.”
Stephen Ayers, the Architect of the Capitol, banned the use of the word “God” in the certificate issued for the Eagle Scout. Ayers, serving in a low-level, non-elected position, claims he has the authority to ban the word “God” from the certificate. This is the first time ever for the Architect of the Capitol to ban religious references. Ayers said he banned the word “God” because someone might be offended.
Pelosi defended Ayers’ decision to ban all religious references. Several legislators signed a letter to Pelosi asking that Ayers’ censorship be stopped. “The Architect’s policy is in direct conflict with his charge, as well as the scope of his office and brings into question his ability to preserve a building containing many national religious symbols,” the legislators said in the letter.
Instead of stopping the censorship, Pelosi defended it. “It’s not about being anti-religion,” Pelosi said. “It is just about what the Architect thought was appropriate for him to proclaim in a certificate.” By saying such, Pelosi approved the banning of religious references by Ayers.

To me, the question of worrying about offending someone is a meaningless escape clause in this situation. The requestor of the certificate specifically asked for references to God in the request.
This guy Ayers is just trying to force his small minded ideas down the throats of the American people. I cannot believe he has the authority to do what he is doing.
Nancy Pelosi is an idiot for defending an action that is not defendable. I took the opportunity to contact her and let her know how I feel. I wasn't vulgar or too angry, but it wasn't the sweetest letter ever sent either.
I know there are other pressing issues around these days, but it makes me sick when people do these kinds of things.
"Had the people, during the Revolution, had a suspicion of any attempt to war against Christianity, that Revolution would have been strangled in its cradle... In this age, there can be no substitute for Christianity... That was the religion of the founders of the republic and they expected it to remain the religion of their descendants." Charles Carrol, signer of Declaration of Independence, framer of the Bill of Rights, delegate to the Constitutional Convention, U.S. Senator
What a surprise. the woman from the city that offers up a welcome to all I llegals with open arms, hates our military and has proven so many times this past year alone, and we should expect anything other than this response from her .... I am not surprised..... the bug eyed one is a typical San Franciscan anything goes, anything at all...as long as it has nothing to do with the Christian religion or defending our country...even if she had not done this I am sure that the defenders of everything ANTI-American, the ACLU, would have rushed in to defend this man's right to deny the other man's rights...Until the American people finally wake up and say they have had enough this will continue
You know, the utter stupidity is sheer criminality. Pelosi is as ignorant of Abraham Lincoln as that boob who took matters into his own hands and made a decision that is not within his power. Please people? Is that what law is about? These Mobocrats have gone so far off the deep end, it is not funny. This whole thing is one big crock of bull dew. It is yet one more excuse and opportunity to stick it to the "Christian majority" or whatever the heck these freaks hallucinate about people who hold religion. It matches right up with Hillary "Ramrod" Clinton's opposition to vouchers for Christian schools because it would breed home grown terrorism. For crying out LOUD! Compare the first 300 years of Christianity to Islam and see which religion is the violent one. This is nothing more than a thinly-veiled attack on people who have managed to ask meaningful questions like: "who am I," how did I get here," and "for what am I here?"
It's these wretched pagan-boomers from the late 40's through the late 60's: they got a draught of prosperity and affluence and fell from grace. We need to reinstitute corporal punishment. No laws, just a good, long paddling until they can't sit. Do it on C-SPAN, too.
I'm starting to doubt that even the democratic majority in the House think that Nazi Pelosi is really good and stable for their cause anymore. Hopefully, she'll be handed her walking papers in '08. Then if we could just avoid electing another political and spiritual traitor.

I have to agree for once, if things like the inqusition could not do it, what makes people think omitting "god" from a piece of paper is going to do it? Or from the pledge of alliegance? Or even meant to do it? As a non-religious person, I get tired of having religion thrown in MY face all the time, my gov't doesn't have to do it too. I can never understand the panic and wringing of hands and dispair over a few times that "religion" is omitted from our gov't or schools because isn't that what CHURCHS are for??? Or have we all gotten so we don't want to get up on Sundays and attend worship services? If so, don't think you are being "with God" by demanding that the word appear on some gov't papers or in the pledge to a flag. As I have warned before, if you start opening that door a crack, then every religion you don't want to believe in, is going to shove it open wide, and soon we will have gov't papers with "allah" on them!
If you have to hyphenate your race--you are NOT an American!! This from a French-German-English-Irish-AMERICAN! See how silly this can become?
Guess they will have to dismantle the Washington Monument and, for that matter, the whole city of Washington as the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfants, had planned it in the shape of a cross.
Received the following in an e-mail a while ago, relating to the Washington Monument. It is titled Laus Deo.
One detail that is never mentioned is that in Washington, D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument.
With all the uproar about removing the ten commandments, etc., this is worth a moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this amazing historical information.
On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., are displayed two words: Laus Deo.
No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn't care less.
Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with everyone you know. These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America.
Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world.
So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply, they say "Praise be to God!"
Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation, Laus Deo. "Praise be to God!"
From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfant ..a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north. The Jefferson Memorial is to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.
A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about separation of church and state? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution. So, read on. How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice.
Praise be to God! Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message On the 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore; on the 20th is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians; on the 24th a presentation made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quoting Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6. Praise be to God!
When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848 deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Praise be to God! Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood given by the founder and first President of our unique democracy "One Nation, Under God."
I am awed by Washington's prayer for America. Have you ever read it? Well, now is your unique opportunity, so read on!
"Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
Laus Deo!
When one stops to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our nation's capitol, he or she will easily find the signature of God, as it is unmistakably inscribed everywhere you look. You may forget the width and height of "Laus Deo", its location, or the architects but no one who reads this will be able to forget its meaning, or these words: "Unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain."
It seems this clarifies the founding fathers' position on separation of church.

VeeBee, I agree with you for the most part. I don't think religion of any kind should be force fed to a person and everyone has the right to not believe. My problem with this particular situation is that references to God were specifically requested to be put into the certificate. Just as you have the right to not have those references, I believe a person has the right to have those references. I think this guy is overstepping his authority and forcing his non-belief down people's throats.
We were founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs and they are part of our heritage and traditions. I think people are free to not believe but also that we shouldn't throw away the foundation of our nation and laws.

Everyone, look around you these are are not seperate attacks. This is part of a huge attack coming from all sides to elimanate the peoples soverinty. Chrisitanity is under attack as well as our boders, along with the increase of immigration. You can change government policy but you will never change a religion. If the NAU is allowed to happen and the Amero becomes our new currency do you think you will read In God We Trust on it? I don't think so. We have got to vote these people out of office.Vote for no Incumbent, lets send a message to our government
To change the direction of this country, you must change the people who you have entrusted. Do not stand by and let others tell you what is good for your country. Vote these carpet baggers out of office.

SanFranGranNan is an absolute idiot. Allan Colmes was spinning himself dizzy last night defending her. It's true that no one in the government can ever remove God from our hearts and minds. But it's still an idiot thing to say the word "God" can't appear on a flag certificate! Cripes...I suppose if the architect had his way, he'd remove "our Creator" from the Declaration of Independence! As for the design of the city and L'Enfant's intent, that's not true:
Washington DC was laid out to be in the design of a cross-Fiction! It seems to be in the form of a cross, but there's no evidence that was the intent of the designer, architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant. If one sees the layout of White House, the Jefferson Memorial, the Capitol, and The Lincoln Memorial as the intended cross, it was not in the mind of Charles L'Enfant because he proposed the original design in 1791, which was long before it was decided that the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials would be built and where (1911 and 1934). Religious significance of George Washington and the Washington memorial-Mostly Truth!
"A woman who demands further gun control legislation is like a chicken who roots for Colonel Sanders." Larry Elder
Well, what I feel is that the "liberal" idea is not against religion, they seem to want to bend over backwards to promote religion in all aspects by allowing this and that religion to creep into our culture. I have heard recently, not sure if it is true or an urban legend, that some colleges now are putting footbaths for the Muslims outside of classroom buildings, and we all saw recently on TV were some muslims are wanting THEIR holidays and religions taught in the school system. As I have said, it is a slippery slope when you start adding prayer/religion in schools, because one never knows how the school will be made up in 5-10 years, what is a white, christian school district today might be 30% Muslim tomorrow! Personally I love Christmas, I like seeing and smelling the trees and seeing packages wrapped in colorful paper and the general holiday atmosphere, but I like the non-religious part of it, Christmas is Christmas, and if it has a religious connatation to your beliefs, then put the manger and the baby Jesus in front of your church, not in front of the school or be prepared to see all sorts of different religious symbols next to yours, look at what happened at Sea-Tac airport last year, they had holiday trees up and wreaths, and some nit wit Jewish leader demanded it was "religious" and threatened to sue if they did not also include menorahs!! And the liberals were all for it!!
I don't care if this nation was founded on judo christian beliefs, it has gone WAY beyond that for the past 200 years, in fact, Jefferson was mulling over dicatating one religion for the entire country when the constitution and bill of rights were drawn up, not sure which one it was, but he realized that that was the entire reason this country was founded, to get away from ONE dictated religion.
If you have to hyphenate your race--you are NOT an American!! This from a French-German-English-Irish-AMERICAN! See how silly this can become?
In this case I think ConcernedMom has got it right.
Veebee I understand and appreciate the point you are making in general. One has to look no further than the situation at colleges in Michigan and Airports in Kansas City to find the footbath building boom taking place. Of course the ACLU is 100% behind this.
It seems to me that the balance has to be struck by not allowing any restriction to be placed on those who seek to exercise their religious practices without forcing such on others.
My view is Building footbaths is an act of supporting or endorsing a particular religion as would be building a Confession Booth. Using God in the Pledge is not. Children at school or adults at work praying on their own before lunch, a test or after an event is religious freedom while a Manager or Teacher requiring everyone to participate in a prayer of their choice is not freedom at all.
Below is a response I got from Fidel Mel about this issue. And now we are told that it took a Nancy Pelosi led House to enforce a policy that was developed in the 1970's and later updated in 2003. It would be interesting to see those policies but I don't have time to research it. It just strikes me as odd that a Republican led Congress in 2003 supported forbiding the use of GOD in an accompanying document sent with a United States Flag. Yet here is the King of The Republicans telling us this is so.
Below is a response to the recent comments I received from you:
Dear Mr.
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Architect of the Capitol and the recent controversy over religious statements on certificates accompanying flags flown over the Capitol. I appreciate hearing from you and would like to respond to your concerns.
The practice of not allowing religious and/or political statements on certificates accompanying flags flown over the U.S. Capitol dates back to the 1970's; and a formal policy has been in place since 2003. Recently, some Members of Congress have complained that this rule is inconsistently and sometimes inappropriately applied.
In response, acting Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers announced changes on October 11, 2007, to the policy governing messages on certificates that accompany flags flown over the U.S. Capitol. This new policy confirms the Architect's role is merely to certify that flags are appropriately flown over the U.S. Capitol, and that in the future, messages on flag certificates will be subject to the discretion of the sponsoring Member of Congress. As an American, I believe in the separation of Church and state, but I also believe that the right to express one's faith is a right that all Americans should enjoy without the intrusion or restriction of the federal government.
Again, thank you for sharing your views with me. If you have any additional questions or comments, please do not hesitate to let me know. In addition, for more information about issues and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at http://martinez.senate.gov.
Mz said: I can only surmise that when the time comes, there are many people in this country who will be "banned" by God.
Mz., Whether or not God "Bans" anyone is His decision, and as I surmise, you understand this? It'll be done not because what our government does or does not do, rather, by each individuals decision for Christ. Those who continually reject Christ will in essence be blaspheming the Holy Spirit, the only unpardonable sin. It's not a governmental decision, or one that the government can even enforce.
I realize what you say but God also has "rules" that require all who would come to him to be of good character or at least trying to be of good character, loving others as being worthy of the same things that they aspire to. Lying, cheating, stealing - in effect hurting others - in my opinion, does not qualify as a response to God's command to "love one another".
God does not need us to defend Him. He will handle everything when the time comes. I was merely pointing out that this might be the result of their actions.
Please do not nitpick. I merely made a statement, a one-liner. I believe in the "Golden Rule" that everyone should "Do Unto Others As You Would Have Done Unto You"! (With no modern-day paraphrasing that everyone seems to think is so funny)

With our house of representatives praying to ALL the names of God, I feel like they are rubbing it in our face and trying to make us give them amunition to fight against religion because they want to do the same thing with religions that they do to equal rights. All religions will be deemed as equall but in fact all other religions except christianity or judaism will have bully status and get special protections to controle the rest of us. They are pushing us into another no win situation. Either separation of church and state and push all religion out or have other relgions dominate us.
