A movement is under way in Saudi Arabia to garner driving rights for women – just one of many rights the oil rich nation denies its women citizens.

The driving ban applies to all women, both Saudi and foreign. It forces families to hire expensive live-in drivers to transport their women, or rely on male relatives to drive them to work, school, shopping, or medical appointments. Recently members of the Committee of Demanders of Women’s Right to Drive Cars started a petition to try to convince King Abdullah to change that policy. Jan Markell, of Olive Tree Ministries, says the problem goes beyond a driving ban.

"I think that when something so simple is banned, and that is their desire to drive, [it's] a good example of the repression in Saudi Arabia. But it's a nation that bans a lot of things," notes Markell. "It bans churches, it bans Bibles. It's a nation that [is] so far behind the times, other than of course their oil wells, and yet it's called America's best ally -- and that's what troubles me."

Markell says Saudi Arabia is stuck 1,000 years in the past, and she believes conditions in that country will not change until the Lord Jesus Christ returns.

I find it odd that the saudi royal family is such good. close friends with bush and his father and yet women have no rights there and we have such high gas prices, apparently the elder bush was able to keep gas prices lower and keep the saudies working with us (ie they paid a lot of money to help us with the gulf war), this current bush seems to think the sky is the limit when it comes to gas prices, and doesn't seem to even try to engage them to lower their prices or put more oil on the market.  Once again, bush is for someone other than the American people!  I can tell you, I can see it coming when we are going to be completely shut down as a nation with super high gas prices!  Being on disability, I am VERY worried about this coming winter and how I will heat my house as I am still $50 shy of paying for LAST years heating bills and I only kept the house at 62 degrees!  And guess what, it is time to turn the heat on again!  I put it off until usually late October until I can't put it off anymore, natural gas is not cheap!

If you have to hyphenate your race--you are NOT an American!! This from a French-German-English-Irish-AMERICAN! See how silly this can become?

Veebee, So frigging what? Do your friends dictate to you how to live your life? I see this as a positive step. In my grandmother's day she wasn't allowed to vote, or smoke, etc.. "Rome wasn't built in a day." Get off your frigin high horse and find the positives in things that are happening. Please.
