Thanks-- I am glad you did.  Here in GA we do not get this kind of news.  I would not even be aware of these brave women and their efforts if not for firesociety.

I wish them continued success and constant safety.

Groups clash over illegal immigration at SoCal church

The Associated Press
Article Launched: 09/17/2007 04:23:25 AM PDT

SIMI VALLEY, Calif.—Dozens of anti-illegal immigration activists faced off against immigrant-rights backers at a rally outside a church where an illegal immigrant is being sheltered with her U.S.-born infant son. One immigrant-rights advocate was injured with a chemical spray during Sunday's confrontation at the United Church of Christ, officials said.

Members of the anti-illegal immigration group Save Our State, which organized the rally that drew about 120 protesters and counter-protesters, said they had hoped to make a citizen's arrest of the woman, who has identified herself only as Liliana.

Liliana is living in the church's former parsonage as part of the New Sanctuary Movement, which arranges church accommodations for illegal immigrants nationwide.

Group members shouted for Liliana, who lived in Oxnard before taking shelter at the church, to give herself up.

"I'm here because I'm for the movement for the illegals to go home," protester Dee Barrow said.

Daniel Smallwood, one of the counter-protesters, accused the anti-illegal immigration activists of racism and said members of his group joined the rally because they didn't want their ideological opponents "to get all the attention."

Officials were investigating allegations that a hospitalized immigrant-rights activist had been sprayed in the face with a chemical agent by an opposing protester, police Capt. John McGinty said.

From Simi Valley community newspaper, Simi "Acorn", from the "LETTERS" section...

Unhappy with reporting on Liliana and UCC

Shame on Darleen Principe and the Acorn for the Sep. 7 story on the mom who faces deportation.

Ms. Principe has neither the fortitude nor honesty to call Liliana what she really is- an illegal alien and a lawbreaker. Instead, she is referred to as an "undocumented immigrant," which severely downplays Liliana's crime.

Yes, I said crime. As in one who breaks the law.

One doesn't need to be a murderer or a bank robber to qualify as a criminal. Journalists, above all, have an obligation to be impartial and to report the facts as accurately as possible.

It is quite obvious that Ms. Principe has let her personal feelings interfere with her journalistic judgment as well as her perception of right and wrong. Liliana is portrayed as a saintly, caring mother ("I am here to fight for my children!") and the authorities are played up to be the villains ("This made her a target of immigration officials. . . .").

Did this last excerpt evoke a mental picture of immigration officials drawing their weapons against poor, defenseless Liliana and little Pablito, as it did for me?

Equally shameful is the Rev. June C. Goudey and the Simi Valley United Church of Christ. Rev. June is guilty of doublespeak when she says criminals should be deported, but then says, "Liliana's only crime was using forged documents to enter the country."

Huh? How can one participate in crime, yet not be considered a criminal, Ms. Goudey? The Rev. June is equally guilty of hypocrisy as her personal viewpoint on obedience to governmental law clearly deviates from the Holy Scriptures her church utilizes.

Ms. Goudey should refresh herself on Romans 13, verses 1 through 5, where Paul is admonishing the followers to submit to earthly governing authorities. Maybe then it will dawn on her that her personal feelings on Liliana's situation are about 180 degrees off from God's word.

Has Rev. June also blinded herself to the fact that Liliana has broken CLUE's precept No. 4- sanctuary candidates must have good moral standing- when she forged documents to gain access into this country?

Do moral people produce counterfeit documents for the purpose of deceiving others for purely selfish motives? They do not.

People who defend or provide aid and comfort to Liliana haven't a moral leg to stand on. They are guilty of contributing to the collapse of this great nation, because they champion the cause of the lawless, and they seek to provide the tools for these criminals to circumvent justice. HERE COMES THE ACLU...

Bill for protest raising eyebrows

Simi mayor defends decision to charge church

Video: Simi press conference

Watch Simi Valley Mayor Paul Miller read a statement regarding the city's decision to make a church pay for a protest that happened in front of it this weekend.
Watch now »
Do you think the Simi Valley church should pay for police costs incurred at the protest?

Yes

No

See the results without voting ».

An attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union said Simi Valley is opening itself up to a lawsuit with its decision to bill a church for the cost of policing an immigration protest.

"Paying for the cost of a political demonstration like this is paying for protection of freedom of expression, which is the price of living in a democracy," ACLU attorney Peter Bibring said Wednesday. "If people had to pay, no one would ever demonstrate."

He said what the city is doing is a suppression of protected speech and simply illegal.

But on Wednesday, Mayor Paul Miller stood by the city's decision to charge the United Church of Christ $39,306 for police presence at Sunday's protest against the church's sheltering of an illegal immigrant. About 125 anti-illegal immigration activists and counterprotesters were at the rally.

"The issue is that they (the church) set up this confrontation," Miller said during a news conference.

He said if the church had not announced it was sheltering an illegal immigrant there would not have been a protest and "we would not have had this problem and this $40,000 could have been spent on something else."

As for the legality of the city's decision, Miller said city officials are cutting new ground.

"And whenever you do something unique it brings out all sorts of questions, so we don't know all the answers."

As to whether the city is, by default, enforcing immigration laws — the jurisdiction of the federal government — Miller said, "we'll let the lawyers figure that out."

The United Church of Christ in Simi Valley is sheltering Liliana and her infant son. The Oxnard woman, an illegal immigrant wanted for deportation, is part of a national New Sanctuary Movement aimed at keeping families of illegal immigrants together.

Church responsible, mayor says

The protest was organized by an anti-illegal immigration group called Save Our State, which hoped to make a citizen's arrest of Liliana.

Joseph Turner, founder of Save Our State, said he couldn't be happier about the city's decision to bill the church.

"We want to put pressure on these churches that are breaking the law," he said. "I don't think they can pay a $40,000 bill every weekend for housing an illegal alien."

Miller said that by publicly announcing its decision to shelter Liliana, the 80-member church provoked the protesters, creating a public safety disturbance police had to prepare for.

The organization behind the sanctuary movement, Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, has argued that going public about who is being sheltered is what makes these efforts legal and proves the church is not "harboring" anyone.

"The city is essentially punishing the church for what is their spiritual decision," said Alexia Salvatierra, executive director of CLUE. She thinks the city's action goes beyond the sanctuary movement.

"We feel like there are serious church and state issues involved," she said. "It's a real crossing of the line."

The Simi Valley City Council thinks the church is harboring an illegal immigrant, a violation of the law.

On Friday, Miller sent a letter to U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Simi Valley, requesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials take custody of Liliana. While no attempt was made to arrest her, two agents were at the protest Sunday, Gallegly said. He said the city has a right to ask to recoup money spent on police services.

"Clearly the city is in the right to go in and take whatever is necessary," Gallegly said.

Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for ICE, said harboring illegal immigrants is an illegal act and it is often used in conjunction with other charges such as human smuggling or taking down criminal organizations.

"Those who willfully violate U.S. immigration laws face the consequences of their actions," Kice said in a prepared statement. "We carry out enforcement actions at appropriate times and places."

Church had no control'

One law professor thinks the city is on shaky ground.

"I don't think I've ever heard of anything like this," said Eugene Volokh, a UCLA School of Law professor.

"In this case, the church had no control over the protests," he said.

Even if the church did break the law, it didn't start the protest, he said. He added the city is getting involved in a debate about federal law.

"They are complaining about a violation that isn't their law and they are talking about an expense that is an indirect consequence of their illegal conduct," he said. "On balance, their argument is so very weak, they are likely to lose."

City Attorney David Hirsch said he was in the process of researching the issue of billing the church and was not in the position to comment now.

Miller said he is pleading with the church to no longer house Liliana. But he added if the federal government is not interested in having her arrested, neither is he. He doesn't want to deal with this issue again.

"I don't want to every Sunday get 50 or 60 policemen out there to maintain order," he said.

Miller said he's asked the city attorney to draw up an ordinance that would allow the city to recover costs if similar situations occur in the future.

City Councilwoman Barbra Williamson believes the church's actions might violate rules of tax exemption for religious institutions.

"I still think this woman is breaking the law, quite frankly, and is making the church look bad," Williamson said. "Is there no church in Oxnard that will take her in?"

She noted that by midafternoon Wednesday, the council had received about 50 e-mails, many from cities congratulating them for taking a strong stance on the issue.

The Rev. Betty Stapleford of the Conejo Valley Unitarian Fellowship Church in Thousand Oaks said her 200-member congregation is supportive of the Simi Valley church housing Liliana. Stapleford said church members take turns spending time with Liliana.

"We're standing firm," Stapleford said. "We had a service on Sunday on immigration and the need for hospitality and to stand up to a broken law that needs to be fixed."

WHEN is the aclu going to run out of attnys?  they are involved in every illegal alien's arrest all over the country, and I can't even find a smart lawyer to sue aetna for me for my long term disability claims they have not paid for the past 5 years!!!!!!!!!  Bet if I was illegal and aetna refused to pay, I would have attnys lining up trying to sue on my behalf!

Hooray for Mayor Miller!!!!  Finally someone has the guts to stand up for the American people!  I am tired of the illegals walking all over us.  Isn't it funny that when they can't deny the truth they pull out that "race" card.

http://www.simivalleyacorn.com/news/.... Mayor to pastor: This one's on your tab Miller wants church to pay $39,306 for police costs By Darleen Principe darleen@theacorn.com Mayor Paul Miller Mayor Paul Miller wants the city to hold Simi's United Church of Christ financially liable for law enforcement costs related to maintaining the peace during Sunday's three-hour protest outside the church- a bill in upwards of $39,000. "Because the church willfully decided to harbor an illegal alien and made a public announcement of that fact, it was responsible for provoking the demonstration that occurred at their location this past Sunday," Miller said during Monday's City Council meeting. "As a result I believe that Rev. (June C.) Goudey and the members of her congregation are responsible for bearing the entire cost of the law enforcement response necessary to deal with the situation." Police Chief Mike Lewis told the Simi Valley Acorn that Simi police expended an estimated 500 staff hours to provide security for the rally, causing the city to spend about $35,000 of unbudgeted money. At any given time, between four and 15 officers were on hand to secure the church, with an additional four tactical teams positioned in nearby areas in case the event escalated, he said. Miller suggested the council consider enacting an ordinance enabling the city to recover costs from any group who attempts to "protect those in violation of the law." Nearly 100 protesters from antiillegal immigration organizations gathered in front of UCC on Sunday to speak out against the church's recent action to provide sanctuary to a 29yearold undocumented former Oxnard resident known only as Liliana. The protest, organized by Save Our State, also attracted counterprotests from other groups, such as the International Socialist Organization. Lewis said the police department had about five days to prepare for the rally after a spokesperson from Save Our State notified the city and the watch commander that they would be coming to Simi to protest. An intelligence officer determined that the protest was originally scheduled to occur in front of Liliana's former sanctuary- an Episcopal Church in Long Beach, where at least two other protests had occured- but was shifted when she moved to the Simi Valley. To get a feel for what to expect at the rally, Simi police contacted Long Beach police as a starting point for their planning, Lewis said. "We assume that if Liliana stays there, using what we've heard from (LBPD), in four to six weeks we can expect Save Our State to come out again," he said. "We have already begun the preliminary planning for a second rally." Simi PD requested aid from public works, the transit department and the county sheriff's department to secure the area on Sunday, Lewis said. The grand total spent by the city, excluding the planning and post-rally debriefing, was $39,306. Miller said that he and Councilmember Michelle Foster met with the church's pastor on Aug. 23 to advise her not to bring Liliana into the city. But on Aug. 28, the church publicly announced Liliana's arrival. "I firmly believe that June Goudey and her congregation at the (UCC) have acted irresponsibly by harboring an illegal alien and making a public announcement calling attention to themselves by those groups who oppose their point of view," Miller said. The church's decision to be public about the matter is a requirement it must follow as a member congregation of the New Sanctuary Movement. UCC in Simi is currently the only church in Ventura County to volunteer sanctuary. The mayor sent a letter to U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Thousand Oaks) on Sept. 4 requesting his intervention. Though Gallegly did intervene, Immigration and Customs Enforcement "made it clear that they were not going to take this person as long as she was on church property," Miller said. "It's a known fact that (ICE) puts low priority on aliens whose only crime is being here illegally." After further discussion, all council members said they were in support of the mayor's stance. Foster, who witnessed the rally, said the city was fortunate that the protest didn't escalate to a higher level. Still, she said, providing security is a "huge tax on our resources." As of Wednesday evening, Goudey told the Acorn, she had not received an invoice from the city. "We have a cordial relationship with the mayor and hope that continues," she said. "I understood the help we received from the police on Sunday was part of their routine public service efforts to keep the peace. Nothing in my contact with them led me to believe otherwise." At the end of council comments, the City Council asked City Attorney David Hirsch and his staff to explore the option of drafting the cost-recovery ordinance and come back with information as soon as possible. The city attorney also said he would look into the church's taxexempt status. "This city is not going to become known as a sanctuary city," Miller said. "Period."

This Save our State bunch rocks.  I can't wait until they organize a full blown boycott and picket line of Home Depot.  Perhaps they can get all the Americans who have lost their jobs or seen their wages hacked to join them.  There has got to be some Union folks around that remember standing up for the working man.

Best of luck to the best....
