PHOENIX — Nearly one out of every seven adult males in the state is not a U.S. citizen.
New figures today from the U.S. Census Bureau also show that more than 18 percent of Arizona adults — those 18 and over — were born in another country. And two out of every three foreign-born residents of all ages came from Mexico.
The data reveal a host of other current information about Arizona and the people who live here. Among the data:
Six percent of Arizona households consist of unmarried couples;
There are more than three widows for every widower;
The average family size is 3.3 people;
Working women in Arizona, on average, earn only about 81 cents for every dollar earned by men;
About one in three births last year were to women who are not married;
Nearly 7 percent of Arizonans spend an hour or more getting to work each day.
The data is all part of the American Community Survey, an effort by the Census Bureau to look at more than just raw population numbers between the actual population count at the end of each decade.
The report also provides some fresh data on immigration, legal and otherwise.
Census Bureau workers only ask things like place of birth and citizenship status but do not inquire about whether anyone in a household is in this country legally. But the statistics do show some patterns.
For example, more than 15 percent of those living in Arizona — and 18.2 percent of adults — were born in another country, and not to U.S. parents. Two thirds of them came from Mexico.
Of that total, nearly a third arrived in Arizona since the beginning of the decade. And virtually all of those in this group are not U.S. citizens.
Another nearly 219,000 came in the prior decade, with only about 12 percent of these having become citizens. It is not until the Census Bureau examines those who have been here since before 1980 — about 89,000 Arizonans — that there are more naturalized citizens than those who are not.
The numbers also show there is not only a "gender gap" in wages but also an ethnic gap.
The median earnings of an Anglo working full time is $31,769; for Hispanics the figure is $21,119. But the gender gap is more pronounced for Anglos — women make 76 cents compared to each dollar for men — versus the 88 cents on each dollar for Hispanic women versus their male counterparts.
More than 29 percent of Arizonans list themselves as Hispanics. But of those age 5 and up, fewer than 25 percent of Arizonans say they speak Spanish.
Among those who are foreign born, however, about 85 percent speak Spanish. And of those, only about 157,000 say they also speak English very well.
Northern California Congressman Dan Lungren is backing a controversial bill that could have a dramatic impact on U.S. citizenship laws. The Folsom Republican says he wants to block automatic citizenship for babies born to illegal immigrant mothers on U.S. soil.
"If citizenship is to have true meaning, someone with no allegiance to the United States should not be able to lay claim to it on behalf of their offspring," Lungren said in a written statement.
Lungren is one of 90 Republicans who've signed on to http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery... color="#0000ff">HR 1940, legislation that seeks to end automatic citizenship for newborns of illegal immigrants.
He says it's a debate worth having, considering an estimated 400,000 babies are born in the United States every year to illegal immigrant parents. Those babies receive automatic U.S. citizenship rights.
But the plan is not expected to get very far in the Democrat-controlled Congress. Democrats across the country oppose the idea.
"It's absurd and it's embarrassing," said California State Senate President pro Tempore Don Perata. "I'd like to say I'm shocked but nothing in politics shocks me anymore."
I am from AZ. It's pretty bad here. The illegal is not the same as in the 50's. Too many want to give back to Mexico a lot of the US. That's why Mexifornia is a nick name for a once great State.
I under stand that illegals have killed more US citizens than have died in Iraq. So where is the real war being fought? Bush lets them get away with this invasion.

Yes - American citizens are being knocked off at a rate of 25 a day over 9,000 a year die at the hand of illegals aliens. Funny I missed that on Brian Williams Nightly News report? ummm?
When you go year by year it is actually more than the Vietnam War if you can believe that!
Elvira is at it again! Immigration acctivistsl stormed Congressional offices today, two people arrested! It seems her son was at the center of the demonstration! This is on Fox News now! She is quoted saying her son will start school in TJ next month. They are demonstrating in TJ too. Their complaint is separation of family! Now let me get this right, they are complaining about being deported and seperated from their families here. Didn't they leave families in Mexico? Nobody is complaining about that.
If the federal government would stop giving these illegals all the freebees and the businesses would stop hiring them, then there would be not reason for them to even be here. We need to keep contacting our officials in Washington and remind them of this. Let them know that the existing immigration laws need to be enforced and start protecting the citizens of this country like they are supposed to.
AK-Man - Welcome to Fire Society!!!! YES!!!! we need to be the itchy poision ivy that does not go away. They need to remember it is American citizens who they work for. It is our country too and they just can't decide one day to give it away!
If you don't belong to Numbers USA - you should join there too! They will alert you so you can call and fax your Congressmen and Senator's when ever there are immigration issues that we need to let our voices heard!
Thanks for the info CJBL. I'm always looking for more ways to voice my concerns and believe me there are a lot of things that concern me out there. We as citizens need to take a stand and not let our great nation be taken away from us. Thanks again.
Seems like we here the same message and statistics all over this country! American citizens NO LONGER want to be ignored regarding illegal immigration and the effects it's having on our cities, states and the nation! Rep. Tom Tancredo makes illegal immigratioin his number one priority! For detailed information on his platform visit teamtancredo.com and check On the Issues. You can also find some great info. on Tom's Blog at that site. He wants to enforce the existing laws! In addition, he vows to build the fence across the ENTIRE southern border, stop anchor baby citizenship, cut off fed. funds for sanctuary cities and states, end benefits handed out to illegal immigrants and DEPORT those that will not leave the country on their own. additional sites: immigrationwatchdog.com fairus alipac MAIA saveourstate LetFreedomRingAmerica (lframerica.com) statesman.com/blogs JudicialWatch.org
This is our country, take it back! (Thank you Tom Tancredo!) Press 1 for English; Press 2 to deport all illegal immigrants!
Thank you Tanc4prez. Yes, Tom T. has all of his ducks in a row, and is willing to take on the "powers that be" to overcome the terrible problems we are having right now with illegal immigration and its unbelievable ramifications in our country, including everything that you mentioned in your posting. This man will do what he says he is going to do.
Please go to Tom's site and read his blogs there, and contribute if you can. We can't have an all volunteer Army for Tom if we don't have the volunteers!
I like Tom Tancredo. But I like Ron Paul better. Ron hits on more issues than the others. He covers a LOT of ground when he says go back to the Constitution & Founder's advice and return States the rights the Fed gov has ursurped.
Ron would be tough on illegal immigration but on many other issues just as critical.
Ron is the only one I have heard say to chuck the "FED", IRS & get back to Constitutional money.
I'll go to Tom's blog though & check him out. I would be thrilled to see him & Ron team up. Now there is a team!!

I read Tom T's issues section. He does say chuck the IRS. But he doesn't say anything about chucking the private banker's "Fed". Or going back to Constitutional currancy.
He is good on other issues. Did not see anything about foreign policy. Ron Paul I like better on these issues, "FED, IRS, repealing the UN-ratified income tax amendment. To me Tom does not go far enough. Though he goes further than all the other, Ron excepted.
Has he said anything about going back to the Constitution as the supreme law of the land? I noticed he didn't have a foreign policy staement. Ron says the US should go back to the Constitution & the Fonder's advice on our relationships with other nations.
I think Ron has a grand idea when he says we should go back to basing decesions on our great document.
You can get a better idea of where I come from by reading my posts on the "Fred Thompson gains..." thread.
Both are good on illegal immigration.

We really need to start applying pressure to the presidential canidates, whether they are republican or democrat--any of them FOR amnesty for illegals, special benefits for illegals, need to be in our "must call, fax, email' weekly box! We need to ramp up our protests to these so called "leaders" like we did on that amnesty bill--we were so rabid that several changed their votes/minds, and we need to let these canidates KNOW how we feel on a daily/weekly basis! We also need to keep reminding the canidates that the illegals don't (or should not be) voting, and WE do vote!! Many elections have been won/lost by a few hundred votes.
If you have to hyphenate your race--you are NOT an American!! This from a French-German-English-Irish-AMERICAN! See how silly this can become?
This possible draft needs to include these illegals, they are here so we should consider them wards of the state and ship their butts off to the war for troop rotation, they want to use us they should be used also not just
knocking up the home front while our boys are fighting. That sucks, you leave to fight for your country and when you come back you have no job to come back to add to that you have a limited number of the opposite sex to start a family with because the majority have been " rode hard and put up wet" as we call it . It's a continual struggle for the persons comming back who have been putting their selves in harms way for many years now. Not only did we get sucker punched on 9/11 we have been gettting the shaft too, it's time to consider our own priority over the rest of the world.
If the border states would have controled this matter many years ago things would be much diffrent, like a disease it infiltrates and then it spreads throughout and without treatment it can kill you.
Sadester, you are right. My state, AZ, has had 'do nothing real' Govs. Now we have Janet Reno err, Napalitono pretending to be tougher on illegals. She had too. She had to respond to Len Munsil who ran against her in the last election. Len would have made a much better gov but the AZ Repukelik, er, Republic "news" paper (what a misnomer!!!) did not give Len fair coverage. Or as much as they gave JN.

Eric - - most every one I talked to - - private - church - everywhere - - did NOT vote for Janet the traitor - - yet she is in office. It's just like McCain. We can't seem to get rid of either no matter how we vote - - or how many of us vote against them.

You are so right Patriot'sPixie. Do you remember the hatchet job done to Ev Meecham some years back after he surprised every one & won as Gov.?
Ev's campaign platform was very good. Anti establisment & a bit similar to Ron Pauls as I remember. Some one seems to have invisible power in this State. Some homosexual guy was helping to lead the recall movement that was based on distortions & exagerations.
I figured if the homosex dude did not like Ev, Ev can't be all bad.

McCain had it under such tight control last election that no one was even listed as running against him. Our write in votes were, of course, too scattered to amount to credibility. He is such a scoundrel! After his debacle in the coal industry, I just plain do not understand how he can have enough clout to be able to run for any office at all - - - just plain crooked iswhat it's called.

ANYONE WHO LIVES IN ARIZONA NEEDS TO READ THIS!!!!!!
JIM CLICK AUTO DEALERSHIPS
Jim Click (pictured at left)
10-17-07 Jim Click is a car dealer in Southern Arizona and a native of Oklahoma. He is trying to overturn a state law that would penalize employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. Click has expressed what we consider some very flimsy rationale in his attempts to overturn a law that is supported by the vast majority of Arizonans. His group also played the "race card" right up front, apparently thinking that anybody who is "Latino" or "Hispanic" supports unregulated illegal immigration. Consider that the leader of Click's group made the following statement, as reported in the Arizona Daily Star "When brown people lose their jobs, white people will lose their jobs." What a stupid statement. Race doesn't fit into their arguments. Race isn't an issue here. The law is. This isn't about "brown", "white", "purple", or "neon green", it's about controlling massive illegal immigration. Click and some of his fellow businessmen have apparently decided they don't want to be held accountable for obeying the law, so they will spend untold thousands trying to undermine the law. Jeff Moorad, a Newport Beach, California resident and the general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team, also supports overturning the law, as well as a number of other Phoenix-based business owners, including Danny Hendon, the owner of Danny's Family Car Washes.
We find it amusing that Click, Moorad and company started a campaign called "Wake Up Arizona!" to promote their cause. They are a little late with that motto. Arizona did "wake up". They are tired of being overrun with massive illegal immigration. That's why this law was passed. It is interesting to note that many ultra-wealthy people with influence have an insatiable hunger for exploitable, ultra-cheap labor. Being saddled with the huge burden of taking a couple of minutes to check a database to make sure prospective new employees are legally entitled to work here is apparently too much to ask.
Please consider this information when spending your hard-earned dollars on automobiles and entertainment in the future. We already have a huge problem trying to deal with illegal immigration in this state. Click, Moorad and company have a right to express their views, and you have a right to not spend money at their places of business.
