Fred Thompson said he has lymphoma tonight on Hannity and Colmes. He said he did not hide it, but is a private person. He said it is a non issue and that his doctor said he can live for years and yeas with it. He did not say whether it is Hodgkins or non Hodgkins lymphoma.

He may not die of lymphoma, but acute leukemia or another deadlier cancer often follows within about five years in my personal experience.

According to wikipedia (as if it's correct??) - it says he has the "non" type.  I wonder with the stresses of being President - if this would get kicked into high gear?  And if it does, would we want a Prez that needs to be on constant chemo?

If it is not an issue why do the physical examination of presidents get media attention? Why did FDR go to great lengths to hide his disability from public eyes and knowledge? Why did President Kennedy hide his Addison's disease? We do not need our adversaries attempting to gain advantage or gaining some psychological incentive from a perceived or real health problem of the president. Just look at the speculation we have heard and seen about the health problems of Osama Bin Laden. I do feel sympathy for anyone fighting cancer; there except by the grace of God, go I.

He is in remission and with most other cancers that can change at the drop of a dime.  I make this statement from observation of many cancer patients over fourty some years experience as a R.N.

Stress such as that encountered by a president can be detrimental to any individual and to their immune system.l

Other posts have noted Fred's weight loss, exercise program etc.  They state he continues to be in a state of remission and is in good health at this time.

Well I would say that it would be REAL important to find out who he would choose as a VP then!!  I would expect to hear him state who he would choose before he got the nomination just based on this lymphoma thing.  If he isn't willing to concede that info, then he doesn't deserve the nomination.

I don't want him for president, but I do hope they can keep it under control.  Having lost my father and my brother to cancer and having several friends down with it, I can only hope and pray that the man is able to survive this and stay healthy.  Cancer is nothing to play politics with with.

Cancer isn't the reason I don't want him. He lost any support I might give when I found out so many members of the Bush administration had signed on to support Thompson, as well as so many of the neocons, especially the Kristols.  This guy could be George W. Bush version 2.1

Don't get your hopes up.  He announced this months ago.  It's a treatable form of lymphoma and he has been in total remission since they discovered it.  His doctor says he will die from old age before the cancer gets him.

You are the most evil hateful people I think I have ever been around in my life.   No, I don't want Rudy or Ron Paul as President but no way I would ever gloat over one of them being sick.  That was the only purpose for any of you to post this, especially since it was announced back in April.

Former Senator Fred Thompson in Remission for Lymphoma

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

WASHINGTON —

Former Tennessee Republican Sen. Fred Thompson, who has been mulling a run for the White House, told FOX News on Wednesday he's in remission from indolent lymphoma.

“As you know, I’m thinking about running for president. There are certain things that you have to check off, in my mind, in order to do that,” Thompson said.

The "Law & Order" star said he was diagnosed with the disease in 2004 after a routine physical. He said the cancer is "fortunately a good kind if you can ever call something like that a good kind" and treatable.

"I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affected. I am in remission, and it is very treatable with drugs if treatment is needed in the future — and with no debilitating side effects," Thompson said in a personal commentary following the interview.

According to the American Cancer Society, this year doctors will diagnose about 63,000 new cases of indolent lymphoma, a slow-growing type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, the part of the body that helps regulate the immune system.

Thompson has a favorable prognosis, said Dr. Bruce Cheson of Georgetown University Hospital. Thompson had been on a cancer therapy called Rituxan, but is not currently in treatment.

"Some lymphomas are very aggressive, but people with slow-growing types, like Senator Thompson's, often (die) from natural causes associated with old age, rather than from the disease," Cheson said.

The illness also appears to have no impact on Thompson's personal consideration of a White House bid.

"I wouldn't be doing this if I wasn't satisfied in my own mind as to the nature of it and the fact that not only will I have an average life span, but in the meantime, I will not be affected in any way by it," Thompson said. "Of course nobody knows the future but that has been in the history for almost three years now in terms of no symptoms and no sickness."

After much coaxing in conservative circles, Thompson, 64, told FOX News last month that he was contemplating a bid for president. The character actor who plays district attorney Arthur Branch on the long-running NBC drama said he began pondering a run after former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker and other Tennessee Republicans began drumming up support for his possible Republican candidacy, citing his conservative credentials.

A former minority counsel in the Watergate hearings and a close friend of Arizona Sen. John McCain, another 2008 GOP White House hopeful, Thompson said releasing information about his health is necessary before announcing any campaign plans.

"The American people have a right to know this. And they have a right to voice their opinions whether they think it's a big deal or not. And I know it's not a big deal as far as my health is concerned, as much as a person can know things like that. But other people have a right to look at it and weigh in and I have a need to factor that into my decision in terms of the reaction I get of that," he said.

What "hopes"? Are you implying that participants in this thread are hoping Thompson has his cancer recur or worse? Where do you see that? Nobody has so much as implied it. Some have questioned whether the issue of his health brings his candidacy into question.  That is absolutely a just and fair question.  Remember Paul Tsongas?  Tsongas claimed he was free from cancer--and probably was-- when he ran for president in 1992, but the disease returned and Tsongas died of cancer in 1997.

His supporters are called Republicans.  And, yes Republicans generally support Republicans.

Well, Republicans are barely 30 percent of the electorate. Probably around 30 percent are Democrats. And another 40 percent or so identify themselves as Independents.  As is readily apparent, NOBODY is going to get elected to ANYTHING by just appealing to Republicans. Without Independents and Democratic crossovers, in a general election, Fred Thompson crashes and burns.  And that looks exactly like what is about to happen.  Even screaming Hillary or Obama in burning building won't help. Thompson is pretty clearly just a machine candidate. Business as usual. THAT, and not cancer, is the issue for most people.

That Fred is one of the machine candidates of big money is the issue for me.

Fred Thompson is a well-oiled Republican machine that can beat Hillary, Obama, or whatever democrat you want to scream about.

I find that statement you made Nancy very interesting. My wife came home as I told her Fred was going to make his announcement on Jay Leno that he had Lymphomia. I told her it wasn't the bad one. She told me regardless, it will wear on him and hit him like a rock if he is going to be under that sort of pressure as a President. She is a nurse also of 30 years. Now she specializes in Gastroenterology becoming a Doctor. Now you know where my son falls into that category as he wants to go into Nuclear Medicine. But, I worry about Fred as a person and not as a President.

There is enough disease that one could only hope not to get. The Media has been eating this up ever since he announced that he was even thinking about entering the race for President. We haven't seen anything yet. Politics are really dirty and they don't care what disease you may have. They Will capitalize on it. Mark my words.

I have Hep C. I went through treatment 3 times to get rid of that. It was from getting shot, as I was in a Motorcycle Gang at the time, and a blood transfusion I had back in 80...Never even knew I had it. When I went on treatment for it, I thought I was going to friggin die. It took for 2 years and then it reared it's ugly head again. Talk about money...$1,400.00 per every 2 weeks. Then I went back on the new and improved Peg Intron A...That was even worse, but hell, I hung in there. Now, everything is still normal after 3 years. Talk about trials and tribulations. This will be the only time you will hear this out of me because it does not pertain to this topic. I thank The Good Lord Jesus Christ for getting me through that. I will never preach. It was God and Family that got me throught that.

I hope Fred Thompson stays in remission.

I hope fred stays in remission too. Nancy and my dear Deerhunter...my lecture in Cancer Biology today was jaw dropping.....Cancer is essentially a disease of the genes....one mutation in your genome can lead to loss of "cell cycle arrest" which is necessary to repair damaged DNA. Also, genetically.....parents can pass on "damaged" or "recessive" genes that code for an ESSENTIAL PROTEIN....P53....if P53 is lost.....no cell cycle arrest.....no apoptosis- Cancer is mitosis out of control......and it will continue to replicate "damaged" DNA.  Fred's lymphoma is cancer of his white blood cells....the main fighters in your immune system. He looks pretty good to me and I think he is very courageous to  put himself under further stress.  You are so right about stress affecting his health....normal people under stress often compromise their immune system and leave themselves open to disease too. Our immune system has NK cells or "Natural Killers" as we call them...they are the WBC's that search out and destroy cancer cells in ALL people....some of you may have had cancer cells at one time- but may be blessed with powerful and efficient "Natural Killers"....you may never know if you might have developed full blown tumors had your immune system not intervened....and hopefully...the allelles your parents passed on to you are properly coding for P53...and at the right levels!

I will keep Fred in my prayers. I have not decided WHO I am backing just yet....but have lost so many dear friends to cancer this past year that I just have to wish him well. We have 10 million NEW CASES of Cancer WORLDWIDE per YEAR.....by 2020....experts estimate the numbers will double!

Even if you do not support Fred, at least say a prayer for him!

Nancy.....have to choose a "cancer" and propose one of the "newer" treatments for a paper I have to write next month.....any suggestions?

I am really into RNA interference and the new Biotech method of using Herpes Simplex Virus (It eats cancer!) to destroy the cancer stem cells. Downside to treatment....you may be infected with Herpes...but would you rather have that or be dead?

BTB--How about multiple myeloma.  That disease has had a miserable outcome for years.  I understand that the Mayo Clinic is doing work to develop drugs to target genes that will be effective in most cases.  This sounds like it may be of interest to you.

Cancer is weird, virus can be the cause and the cure.

I'm intrigued by the impact of obesity on cancer--it seems it may be the cause of many cancers,  The treatment is simple--diet.  I've read also that much of the food we eat my have additives that make us want to eat more.

About Fred, this is not the first time he has mentioned his disease.  I believe he announced this in the spring and at that time he had had the condition for five years.  I, too, wish him the best and can't quite understand why he would risk his health.
