Texas Straw Poll Results
Texas straw poll took place today. But this was not your typical straw poll...there were some restrictions on who could vote.
Delegates to the Straw Poll - Must have been a Delegate or Alternate Delegate to at least one of the last 4 Republican State Conventions (2000, 2002, 2004 or 2006) or one of the last 2 Republican National Conventions (2000 or 2004)As usual this didn't stop Ron Paul supporters coming out to support him outside of convention. There were hundreds of them, maybe even thousands. The doors to the convention closed at 10:00 am, which was bad news for Ron Paul and his supporters, because a bus load of delegates(people who were allowed to vote, couldn't get in, because their bus arrived at 10:02 am. Bad? Yes, thats 40-50 votes that Ron Paul didn't get.
But the harsh requirements did not stop Ron Paul's support, inside the convention Ron Paul still had plenty of supporters.
The results of the straw poll are as follows:
41.1% Duncan Hunter (534 votes)
20.5% Fred Thompson (266 votes)
16.17% Ron Paul (217 votes) + ~50 votes on the bus=267 <--fyi: not verified 6.4% Mike Huckabee (83 votes) 6% Rudy Giuliani (78 votes) 4.7% Mitt Romney (61 votes) 2.2% Ray McKinney (28 votes) .77% John Cox (10 votes) .62% John McCain (8 votes) .46% Sam Brownback (6 votes) .46% Tom Tancredo (6 votes) .23% Hugh Cort (3 votes) The amount of votes shows you how bad the GOP is right now. They expected 10,000 votes, but only got 1,300. side note: some have questioned the 10,000 expectation #, here is the article that confirms that they indeed expected 10,000 people when they organized the straw poll.
Overall a good showing for Ron Paul, since he was able to get 3rd place regardless of the fact that only party republicans were allowed to vote. In fact the straw poll was setup in order to completely shut out Ron Paul with 0 votes, so a 3rd place finish is very good.
Additionally Texas turned out to be the biggest fund raiser for Ron Paul, it was his biggest fund raising event ever. He was able to raise $102,000 from one event. Just shows that the straw poll is really not that indicative of his support.
And if anyone is counting, Iowa: 5th place, Illinois: 3rd place, Texas: 3rd place. Slowly growing
