Iraqi terrorists caught
along Mexico border
American intelligence chief confirms
'people are alive' as a result of capture

President Bush's top intelligence aide has confirmed that Iraqi terrorists have been captured coming into the United States from Mexico.

The confirmation comes from National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell, who talked about the situation in an interview with the El Paso Times recently.

"Coming up through the Mexican border is a path," McConnell said. "Now, are they doing it in great numbers? No, because we're finding them and we're identifying them and we've got watch lists and we're keeping them at bay."

But, he said, "There are numerous situations where people are alive today because we caught them (terrorists)."

Intelligence officials say the numbers and details of such situations are classified, but McConnell pointed as an example to Mahmoud Youssef Kourani, who entered the United States through Tijuana, Mexico, in 2001, and later pleaded guilty to helping raise money for Hezbollah, which has been designated by the U.S. government as a terrorist organization.

The goal, McConnell said, is for terrorists to gain admittance to the United States, and then produce "mass casualties."

"You've got committed leadership. You've got a place to train. They've got trainers, and they've got recruits," McConnell told the newspaper. "The key now is getting recruits in. So if your key is getting recruits in, how would you do that?"

McConnell's office did reveal some numbers, during fiscal 2006, there were 14 Iraqi nationals caught trying to enter the U.S. illegally, while so far in 2007, that number is 16.

"Now some we caught, some we didn't," McConnell told the newspaper. "The ones that get in – what are they going to do? They're going to write home. So it's not rocket science; word will move around."

Also revealed was that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted 60 Iraqis crossing the nation's southwestern border in 2006 who were seeking asylum in the U.S., while that number so far in 2007 is 178.

The Times report said a U.S. intelligence analyst said there's been evidence that human smugglers, or coyotes, are telling Iraqis to ask for amnesty if they are caught.

The typical scenario is this: Forged documents are used to get an Iraqi into a country in South or Central America. Since travel from country to country is allowed without vises in many locations there, they work their way north to the U.S. border.

McConnell told the newspaper the numbers are classified, but there have been a relatively small number of people with known links to terrorist groups who have been caught at that point.

Kourani, for example, apparently paid a Mexican Consulate official in Lebanon $3,000 for a Mexican visa and then was smuggled into the United States in the trunk of a car.

He was sentenced to more than four years in prison after admitting he helped raise funds for Hezbollah.

When the newspaper asked U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas, of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee, about the situation, he said, "It's not something we would talk about."

"We have had intelligence about al-Qaida identifying Latin America as a potential or prospective area where they could come through, but frankly, I'm surprised that the director would make definitive statements like that because, even if it were true, you wouldn't want to publicize that," Reyes told the Times.

McConnell was senior vice president with Booz Allen Hamilton, focusing on intelligence and national security, before being appointed to his current post by Bush in February.

He previously was the director of the National Security Agency and served as a member of the Director of Central Intelligence senior leadership team before then.

This is no surprise to me. God only knows how many middle easterners have entered this country illegally via Mexico. And now they are keeping quiet, organizing, and bideing their time before they strike. My question is: When the FU*^ will they put military on the border? When it's too late and 10's of thousands are slaughtered???

John,

I already live ocean front but it is not because I believe the G-men are getting all the bad guys along our open borders.  And of course if they make it across they are home free, literally.  We will pay them with social benefits so they will comfortable until they want to commence with havoc and destruction.

There was an exterminator ad on television a few years ago that said "If you see one rat, you probably have 20 in your home"

I feel the same way about our enemies that are caught strolling into our country through the unsecure borders.  For every one they catch there are 20 more dug in waiting for their orders.

This is old news, here in Arizona we have been finding discarded Quran's and prayer rugs for quite some time now.  For the government to announce this now is like the Surgeon General announcing that they just discovered that cigarette smoking is bad for your health.

Illegals from terrorist nations are crossing the border into Arizona.

I know they want the Illegal Aliens, but they are getting more than fruit & Vegetable pickers. They are getting Illegals worldwide.

Drug Cartels and all of Americas enemies know their way into Mexico, and how to walk across a border.

If our government cared to stop them, they know how to do it.

They want to keep pouring money into their war, and into Mexico to fight their Drug Lords. When do they worry about America?

Will Mexico use that money to build up their army? If they do we are funding their Drug Cartel. They are with the Mexican Army.

JUST BUILD THE DANG FENCE!

GUARD THE BORDER!

QUIT SUPPLYING AND FUNDING OUR ENEMIES!

ENFORCE THE LAWS!!!

I am sorry, if you thought I don't support the troops, I just support taking care of our borders also. And Not supporting our enemies.

I have a very dear friend of my son's that is in Baghdad now. He spent his last year of high school living in my home. He even called me Mom. He is in danger every day.

What I don't like is them giving money to certain factions that turn out to be the enemies. That is what I was thinking, when I blowed my cool and maybe misstated what I meant.

I would love to see them all home safe & soon, but I do support them doing what they are sent to do.

For sure, Mr. T.  Did you read my letter to John McCain:

"Our boys and girls are not dying every day on foreign soil so you and Kennedy and Graham and Bush can give our country away to the neighbors"

I understand Sir.    I was responding to the " hope we find them" statement.  I know we can do better.  This thread was about terrorists coming in over the southern border.    You can go through every post I have ever made on this forum and you will not find any demeaning our valiant troops.   One of my best buddies who just turned forty was in Desert Storm in a Tank and  reupped in the guard a few years back and went back over to Iraq in August of 06.  He was blown sky high in March by an ied in a Hummer and fractured two of his lower vertebrae and His gunner got the worst end with some schrapnel.  Both sent home in April and glad to have him back home in decent shape.

Consider it a given that I support our troops who go where asked under whatever conditions thay are asked.  What you will find in my posts is a constant reference to an absolutely ridiculous policy of fighting for support for a war on terror without including a sound border policy to go with it.  Either we are at war and we are at risk or we are not.  No way you can have one without the other.   I quarrel not with what is being done, but rather what is NOT being done.   I am 100% in your company with support of our troops.  I want them to have the best training, equipment and leadership that is possible so their efforts and sacrifices do not go in vain.  That would be the tragedy.   To gain a future for people in Iraq and lose our heritage and freedoms here at the same time.   I would LOVE to see a poll of our troops as to their feelings about our immigration policy.     They know why they fight and Firesociety members have our work to do here at home to hold up our end for them.    My Father was in the Airborne and I am proud of him and all others who have served in any branch.

Also, the president has decided to decrease the amount of troops on the border by 1/2.  Do you agree that that makes sense for national security given what we know about terrorists entering the country undocumted ?

We all support the troops here. We all have our differences on this site, but you can't deny that we all love our country. That is one reason why we are all here.

msbobbie: Where is the letter you wrote to John McCain? I have not had a chance to read it.

The fighting men and women of this nation are not the problem it is the leadership which command them that is the problem, particularly the Commander in Chief.  He is not commited to securing the border.

The troops won the Iraq War in less than a month.   The President and Congress have failed miserably to accomplish whatever it is they want politically for over 4 years.

I posted this article to demonstrate the fact that the administration is finally getting around to discussing the reality of terrorists indeed using the southern border as a significant point of entry.  It was not too long ago that they resisted the notion that this was the case because they did not want it to encourage the American people's desire for a secure border.

Sorry to take so long to reply, Mr.T.  It had gotten buried on the Election 2008 forum.  A thread titled A LETTER IN THE MAIN FROM JOHN MCCAIN.   I just bumped it up so it would be easier for you to find.
