Sanctuary Cities

Posted on August 13th, 2007
By Fred in Commentaries, Immigration

If you listen to folks who oppose immigration and border enforcement, you get the feeling they think we put locks on our doors to keep everybody out. The truth is we have locks so we can choose who comes in.

An example of what happens when we don’t make the choice took place August 4th when three Newark, New Jersey, college students with great promise were executed, gangland style. The killers’ ringleader was apparently an illegal alien indicted twice in 2007 for felonies, including the rape of a kindergarten-aged girl.

Why would such a person be set free instead of being handed over to authorities for deportation? The answer is that Newark is a “sanctuary city” which bans cooperation between local officials and federal immigration officials. More than 60 sanctuary zones, including 30 of America’s largest cities, provide a national networked haven for foreign and organized criminals who recruit and operate outside those areas as well. These sanctuaries include Cambridge, Massachusetts; Los Angeles, California; Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Austin and Houston, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and New York City.

The consequences of “sanctuary cities” may be most obvious in the city that became the first in 1979 — Los Angeles. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, a confidential California Department of Justice study from the mid-1990’s showed then that at least 60 percent of the members of L.A.’s most violent gangs, with membership in the tens of thousands, were illegal aliens. Of all outstanding murder warrants in Los Angeles, 95 percent are for illegal aliens. Frustrated police say they are powerless to pick up even well-known, previously deported felons.

The costs of policies that offer shelter to criminals are borne not just by the citizens of Newark, Cambridge, and other sanctuaries though. According to the investigative arm of Congress, the Government Accountability Office, illegal aliens made up 27 percent of the federal prison population in 2005, totaling 49,000 and costing federal taxpayers $1.2 billion. There were also more than 220,000 illegals in state and local prisons and jails. Now, I am not suggesting that all illegal aliens are violent criminals. They are not. Most are peaceful folks just trying to get by like the rest of us. But we would be far better off if we checked on people as they come into the country rather than find out who the bad ones are after they victimize people here.

We have the right to keep criminal predators out of our home. Those who want to immigrate into America need to knock, identify themselves, and ask permission first. They will not do so though if we can’t even ask who they are, which is prevented in sanctuary cities. Now I am a strong federalist, but immigration is a responsibility of the federal government, and the failures of local officials to enforce our national laws have a direct impact on communities around the country. So federal law must be enforced, or our neighborhoods will continue to be the scene of chilling and lurid crimes committed by those who broke the law in the first place to come to America.

Says the man that hired a former senator that lost his seat because he was gung ho on open borders, to run his presidential campaign. Thompson is a CFR affiliate and will give us the same illegal alien crap that Clinton and the Texas Twit gave us.                                                                                                      When  the present  Dem and Rep leaders get the nomination, don't bother voting, just stay home and start learning Spanish.

Tells you how much this Thompson fellow can be trusted.  I know for a fact that Houston is a sancturary city.  It's frightening to see all the foreingers here who don't speak a word of English but you look in their eyes and their message comes across loud and clear.  There here to harm us.  Am I talking about Mexicans only?  No I am not!  I am talking about some very scary people from Arab countries and Russia too.  They are thugs just waiting to be provoked.  Truthfully, I am not all that sure they are waiting to be provoked they may just be laying in wait for orders from their leaders abroad.

I am not usually the paranoid type.  But I am worried about these people, very worried.  They need to go back to wherever it was they came from.  No, I do not think most of them are here legally.

Fred Thompson wouldn't name Houston if he were wanting to be politically correct and cost himself votes.  This is a big city.  Very big with lots of voters.

The animal that raped the kindergarten aged girl should have been deported via cannon across the border. Cut all funding to Newark until they follow the laws of this land. No federal dollars ought to go to any sanctuary cities.

Agree and yes Avery, I agree about what you said. I pulled my money out of the bank last Monday and put it into a Credit Union...See where I am going here. Reason? Identity theft and that just doesn't come from any race in particular. Now, I am even thinking about pullin it out of the Credit Union..Reason? Just because of what you and Melinda stated. Not paranoid, it will be with me, my family and my guns. Get my point? These Sanctuary Cities are crazy and to let the Federal Government continue to appease them is whacko. I'm not the brightest star in the Galaxy by any means, however, I do know how to survive. Even with the best.

As far as I know there are not any sanctuary cities near me, thank goodness.  I keep a real close eye on our checking account online but it wouldn't be feasible for us to pull our money out.  His SS check and my paycheck are both electronically deposited but it's easy to monitor the account online.  As far as guns go, we have a house full.  We've had to take pot shots at illegals trying to break into our outbuildings at night and that has deterred them so far, that and the security system.  We'll do what we have to do.  The illegal invasion is not a conspiracy theory.  It is a fact.  They are here and we have to deal with it.  That doesn't mean I support vigilantism because I don't.  I will only defend myself, my family and my property.  Everybody needs to do the same.

I am sorry to hear that Melinda. You see, we all have some problem. You have already gone through the experience of the poor job market there, and we are now getting hit with it. I haven't had a problem with illegals coming to my door or even getting close to my house, although I am sure it too is on the way as I live, well, you know where I live. They are here for sure though. More and more. Tampa is considered a Sanctuary City. That's 32 miles east of me...right across the confoundant bridge....lol...Led Zep.

yeah Jason, that's really got me peod. How can they let him go though? He committed a Crime way beyond, well, let's just say as bad as The Jessica Lumsford Case. We can't deport this guy and that's the problem. He should be shackled and tied to a friggin tree, but that isn't our justice system. Hmmm....You can't send him back to Mexico, they won't do anything to the BA**RD! Man, what to do?

Then there is the soemthing it seems everywhere now. Rape, Murder, Nazi style killings, etc. These people make me puke. Ya know, GWB used to be all for Firing it up when it came to death row. Now, the Law has to go through the course as it did back then, but man, he sure did sign those death warrants left and right if my memory serves me correctly.

Deerhunter, our job market has always been good but we have numerous farms that hire illegals.  That is where our problem is at this time.  Our local businesses are cracking down on illegals but there is nobody to crack down on the farmers.  I'm torn about legal farm workers.  If they are here legally, I don't have much problem with it.  The problem happens because some of the smaller farmers can't afford the cost of hiring legal migrants so they bring in the illegals.  If it can't be controlled I would rather see them all gone.  The farmers will just have to find another way.  Anyway, most of the farms here grow tobacco and tobacco farms can all go out of business as far as I'm concerned.  I work in a booming industrial town and jobs are plentiful and good paying.  The locals have really been pressuring businesses to obey the immigration laws and so far they are doing pretty good.  If the illegals don't work on the farms, they don't work.

The illegals here work the tobacco fields all day and steal all night.  I have three dogs outside that keep them at bay but the dogs aren't mean so they can bark but they won't bite.  I have a Bluetick Hound in a large fenced lot behind the house that can alert the whole neighborhood when she's riled and a Jack Russell Terrorist in the house. LOL

I'm originally from South Florida (Pompano Beach) so I feel your pain.  There were illegals down there when I was a kid.  We moved here when I was a teenager and I thought we were away from them. Undecided

Hahaha...I lived in Pompano Beach and graduated from Deerfield Beach High...Small world sometimes huh? LOL@ the Jack Russel Terrorist...Now that's good. My sister owns a Kennel up in Archer, Fl. and she has 3 Jack Russel's and a Doberman. Guess who rules who? You guessed it, the Jack Russel's. It's too funny.

I have a Shephard Akita mix. Nice dog and very aware. Not too agressive, but has been known to be when put in a situation. He doesn't take well to kids although and I never understood that. Grant was young when we got him. I never did understand why. He's a really good watch dog though.

We had an Akita once and he was good with kids.  Sometimes Shepherd's can be ill with kids and some mixes can be worse.  We had two Rottweiler/Catahoula Leopard mixes for many years and they were a terror.  No illegal problems with them around.  One weighed 205lbs and the other weighed 130lbs.  After they died of old age we got the Bluetick because more people moved into the area and we occasionally see kids on bikes that we never saw before.  I don't want an aggressive dog around now that we have some neighbors on bicycles.  I had to pull one of the Rotty/Catahoula's off a Mexican on a bike once in front of the house and I'd hate to have one get a kid.  We're more responsible than that.  Never saw the Mexican again though. LOL  He was trolling past the house on the bike checking things out when the dog got him.  He never came back.

You are right though.  Jack Russells rule!

this is why we need better border security...  but sanctuary cities are very important to keep, they're not the enemy.  After all, Fred works in one of these sanctuary cities, and they offer him a lot of tax advantages.

What the local authorities need to do is hand over illegals to the feds for deportation when they catch them, instead of letting them go.  Try running someone over with your car in mexico, you won't get released, regardless if your foreign.

But giving the feds jurisdiction over everything is not the answer.  Fred is in affect asking us to get rid of the seperation of powers - between federal and state levels.  This is a constitutional principle, and must be upheld.

All that needs to happen is local authorities need to deport illegals.  its simple.

I live in the LA area and we not only have cities here that give sanctuary to illegals, but some are actually run by them and the drug cartels.  Scary?  Yeah.

Right on, Fred!

In rural areas like where I live in Oklahoma, illegals have been  detained.  ICE called and our sheriff was told they could not come to pick up less than 30.  If they had not committed any crime, turn them loose.  Local authorities anywhere cannot deport.  I think it would take a constitutional amendment to change that.

Fred gets points with me for this although ganted it is a virtually no risk unanimous position.

I agree with those who say that anytime a candidate puts in writing his position in the press he is taking a step of accountabilty  That is where we come in, to make sure the message is consistent and acted upon. That is all we can expect of our politicians.  I look forward to more information on Fred's positions...  Thanks Melinda...

Some pols need screamed at and voted out  and some need support and encouragement.

Truth, I don't understand.  He has taken a strong position against illegals and sanctuary cities.  What scares you about that?  He's clearly stating his position on them and it's obvious he's against them.  Not picking on you, just curious.  Immigration is a Federal problem.  States are supposed to follow the immigration laws set down by the Federal government and should be doing so according to Federal law.  That is what he is saying.

Seraph, Fred is not asking anything. Fred is a Federalist and is for limited control by the government but in this case, immigration is already a Federal law and the states should enforce it locally and they are not.  The Federal law on immigration has been around for a very long time and is one of the laws that should be at the Federal level IMO since it ties directly to our national security.  You can't leave this one up to the states because then you would have people sneaking in and filling up certain states legally and restricted from others.  That would be impossible to control.  That would mean border checks at every state.  It would be a ridiculous idea to leave immigration entirely up to the states.  He didn't make the  Federal law, he's for enforcing an already existing law.  That is what we have been trying to tell the government forever.  Enforce the d### laws!

Msbobbie, if the Feds won't pick up illegals when they are caught by the local governments then the law does need to be changed at the Federal level.  That is one of the things we must change if anything is to get done.

Seraph, no, sanctuary cities are not a good thing if they protect criminals.  Fred is very much against them.

This is an interesting article coming from onenewsnow.com. This is not a smart move for Fred's campaign.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?  An Arab Christian and staunch critic of Islam says she cannot support Fred Thompson if the former Tennessee senator enters the presidential race. Recently Thompson's communication director announced that former Michigan senator and U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham has joined Thompson's team in a major role that would be considered campaign manager. Brigitte Gabriel is founder and president of the American Congress for Truth. She says as a senator, Abraham was a water-carrier for extremist Islamic groups. She says Abraham opposed profiling of Arabs and the use of secret evidence against Muslims, and he attempted to repeal the Clinton counter-terrorism package. “He refused to fund computer tracking of students and other foreign aliens, giving millions in our tax money right to Hezbollah. And he is the one who put the Council on American-Islamic Relations on the map on Capitol Hill," says Gabriel. Gabriel says this is not someone Fred Thompson should pick to run his campaign. "How can we support a guy like Fred Thompson who picked this man to head up his team?” she asks. “Either Thompson is clueless about Abraham, which should immediately disqualify him for the White House and frighten all of us about how he makes decisions -- or he knows about Abraham and went with him anyway." Thompson, who has not yet officially entered the race, reportedly might make a formal announcement around Labor Day.

That story was not entirely true.  Abraham is an advisor only and does not run or head up anything according to the Thompson campaign.  He has chosen Lacy for his campaign manager.  I have the statement from the Fred camp and will post it as soon as I find it.  Mostly it was a hit piece intended to derail his campaign and it did hurt him until an explanation was given.
