TANCREDO ON THE WAR ON TERROR

Before he became a candidate for president, Tom Tancredo was telling Americans that the U.S. should threaten to bomb Mecca if Islamic terrorists successfully detonate a nuclear device in America.

In July of 2005, he said on Fox News, "If this [terror attack] happens, and if, in fact, we can prove that it was perpetrated by some fundamentalist Islamic - 'Islamo-fascist' is really I think what we should call them - then you might think about this as a threat, the retaliation on their holy sites.

"We are talking about a situation where our very lives are at stake, not just the life of the United States, but of Western civilization," he insisted.

A week later, Tancredo told WFLA Florida radio host Pat Campbell:

"You know, there are things that you could threaten to do before [a terror attack] happens ..."

The Colorado Republican then explained: "What if you said something like: If this happens in the United States and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims - you know, you could take out their holy sites."

Asked if he was talking about bombing Mecca, Tancredo replied: "Yeah."

And the congressman and presdential candidate is not backing down from these comments. He told an audience in Iowa today, almost exactly two years later, that as president he would advocate the very same position.

"If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina," the GOP presidential candidate said, according to IowaPolitics.com. "That is the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they would otherwise do.

"If I am wrong fine, tell me, and I would be happy to do something else. But you had better find a deterrent or you will find an attack. There is no other way around it. There have to be negative consequences for the actions they take. That's the most negative I can think of."

He fiurther warned: "The president and this country better figure out exactly what it can do to deter, I underline deter, the next attack.

"Deter, not just respond, deter, or else I assure you we are going to suffer. The extent of which of course I do not know. I know what they are planning and I know what they want. I do not know if they are going to be capable of doing this tomorrow, the next day or a month from now. I know right now at this moment there is nothing that deters them."

Better to deter attacks than to declare war.  But one way or another Tancredo has got it right Western Civilization is going to have to do something other than pull a tail-tuck like the the Spainish have done.

Tancredo to save American lives is how the Headline should read,

I agree, SM.  A message has to be sent.  It is kinda like keeping an attack dog in your yard.  The alternative is to re-act after the damage is done.

I do not know much about Steve King, but I trust Tom and they have worked together nearly every day for years.  If that is Tom's pick, then it is mine.

He is a FairTax advocate and staunch ally of Rep Tancredo on the illegal immigration issue.

The Congressman was asked about the State Department criticism of his remarks about how to deter terrorism in the debate this morning.  He responded:

When the State Department stops complaining about my comments I will begin to worry. Anyone who does not make efforts to deter attacks is not fit to be President.

Twenty minutes into the debate this morning, 4 of the candidates had been called on twice to answer a question, and Tom had not been called on at all.  The discussion was on the war in Iraq, and George was about to change topics.  Tom interruped and said.  " We are in a war with Islam.  We can win on the ground, but we are more concerned about the rules of engagement.  Our troops have one arm tied behind their back.  Iraq must take responsibility about a political and economic solution."

There are times that I really wish Rep Tancredo were a better speaker during these debates.  He does so well in the one-on-one interviews and other typical situations. 

But no matter how polished some of the others are they just cannot beat his message overall. 

So, people need to decide if they want their shoes shined or their country to be safe and free. 

I think he has done the best he can do to this point.  There is no doubt that he has influenced the debate substantially. 

While I hate that he doesn't get more air-time during these debates and isn't always able to give an answer that fully explains his position I am nonetheless hopeful that he will do well enough in the Straw Poll to get a little boost and then gain more momentum. 

The more that voters find out about the other candidates the less excited they get.  The more they find out about Rep Tancredo the more they want to know.

To be succinct, the FAIRTAX lets people decide how much taxes they pay based on how much money they choose to spend.  They will learn there are many ways they can save.  Betcha there won't be many more of those 'made in china' trinkets on the impulse racks at the check out stands. 

I am hoping they will open accounts for retirement and emergency medical care with the Social Security and Medicare insurance that is now being held out of their paychecks, and they will still have the Federal Withholding portion for other things.

I agree.  I preach the same WAKE UP AMERICA message.

I read one newspaper article from some town in Iowa where someone at the gathering Tom was addressing asked if he would chose Steve for VP.  Tom replied that Steve would be a good choice.  "We think alike, we vote alike, we even look alike.  You would not believe how often we are mistaken for one another".

Newspapers today say other candidates are criticizing Tom for his thoughts on how to deter a terror attack on the US but none have offered a plan of their own.

President Bush has been criticized for his 'wiretapping' efforts to detect suspected terrorists.  The American people do not want a National ID card.

Tom is outspoken.  He says what he means and he means what he says.  i.e. He has said at every opportunity   "I WILL instruct the Justice Department  to crack down on those who are hiring illegal aliens" "I WILL get that fence built"  All of the other candidates  take a softer approach "Well, we need to remove the incentive for people to enter our country illegally and that means stopping the employers from hiring them, and we need to improve our border security"

I asked this question before on another thread but no one answered it and the thread is now buried, I cannot find it.

Congressman Tancredo also said he would like to know what alternatives there are to deterring a terror attack, and now I ask again

I don't think you can prevent one, just reduce the probability.  It requires constant vigilance, like neighborhood watch.  Professionals in the law enforcement business have trained resources and good tools, but there are limits to what they can do.  Idiots like the ACLU further handcuff them with excessive restrictions on what they can do before the fact.  But there is a trade-off, because we don't want the police to become the gestapo.  This is where everyone of us can be eyes and ears for the police and report suspicious people and activities.  We can multiply the effectiveness of law enforcement. 

The other thing we can do is learn to use a gun and get the permits to carry one.  Everybody doesn't have to do this, but if many or most of us do, then it will have a deterrent effect on those who aren't suicidal maniacs and may limit the impact that the suicidal maniacs can have. 

After 9-11, I would have put the onus on the airlines and airports to do the screening, rather than creating the monolithic TSA.  I think if the airlines wanted to stay in business, they would have the most motivation to do what it takes to prevent another 9-11.  They would also have the most motivation for monitoring the ultimate performance of their programs and to look for how to increase the effectiveness with technology and where to lower costs without compromising security.  Instead, they have washed their hands of the matter and if something happens, it will be the government's fault.  The have no accountability or motivation to make their airline as secure as it should be.
