Lets Counter La Raza's Action Alert with some of our own. Any suggestions?
From NCLR Action Alert: Comments by House Democrat suggest the House Democratic Leadership does not intend to move forward on immigration reform for 6 years Please Respond NOW ! Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) recently told the director of an NCLR Affiliate in Illinois that the Democratic Leadership expects the Latino community to wait until the second term of a Democratic President before immigration reform can move forward. According to the Washington Times in a July 25 article:
“The congressman's statement was reported by a Hispanic activist and confirmed by Mr. Emanuel. ‘Congressman Rahm Emanuel said to me two weeks ago, there is no way this legislation is happening in the Democratic House, in the Democratic Senate, in the Democratic presidency, in the first term,’ Juan Salgado, board chairman of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, told the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) at its annual convention last weekend.”
Please contact Rep. Emanuel and the Democratic Leadership in the House to make it clear that the Latino community expects a much deeper commitment to immigration reform from the leadership in the Congress. Our community cannot wait for six years; we insist on leadership now!
Call the Democratic Leadership NOW and demand that Rep. Emanuel and the Democratic Party take a stand for immigrant communities. Rep. Rahm Emanuel: 202-225-4061 Speaker Nancy Pelosi: 202-225-4965 Majority Leader Steny Hoyer: 202-225-4131 If your Representative is a Democrat, call them and demand that they carry the message directly to Speaker Pelosi and Rep. Emanuel themselves. Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.
You can write your own message or use the sample letter below. Please send to Rep. Emanuel at rahm.emanuel@mail.house.gov.
Dear Rep. Emanuel:
We are outraged that you would tell a Latino leader that our community should expect to wait for six years before the Democratic leadership in the Congress will move on immigration reform to fix our country’s broken immigration system.
The situation in immigrant and Latino communities is dire; hundreds, if not thousands, of U.S. citizen children have been forcibly separated from their parents by our nation’s immigration authorities. Millions in our communities suffer exploitation in the workplace and fear in their neighborhoods. Millions of U.S. families wait in unacceptably long backlogs to reunite with loved ones, and the death rate at the U.S.-Mexico border continues to increase. The failure to address this issue in this Congress has extreme consequences on the entire Latino community; more than 60% of Latinos in several recent polls say that the immigration debate has had profound negative effects on their families.
We expect better than this from our leaders in the Congress. We urge you to conduct yourselves like leaders and give the country the immigration reform it needs and deserves; you must begin this critical work immediately.
I just tried to e-mail Rep Emanuel through the government web site and it was kicked back because I do not live in his district...so I e-mailed him using the link above and ask why NCLR was provided a direct link to him and told him I would be contacting every talk radio show I can find along with Lou Dobbs & Glen Beck....maybe he can explain to them why he is discriminating against anyone that is not a member of NCLR or hispanic ( since you have to be hispanic to join)
