Members of IBEW Local 1109 at Goshen Indiana’s Johnson Controls plant will lose their jobs over the next several months as their employer moves operations to Reynosa, Mexico.
The workers, who produce parts for thermostats and building control systems, will see their jobs swept away by an outsourcing wave that has contributed to the loss of over 63,000 manufacturing jobs in Indiana since 2001.

Jeff Carter, International Representative for the Sixth District, praises Local 1109’s leaders for helping to negotiate a severance package that includes liberalized eligibility rules for pension benefits and retiree healthcare. Carter, however, says, "It is unfortunate that U.S. laws don’t protect workers whose companies relocate to other

Besides cheap labor companies aren't faced with all the rules and regulations businesses face here because of "well-meaning" government interference and the costs of implementing them.

You know, it wasn't so many years ago that people took jobs as they were available and were happy, even if not fully content, for a day's wages in exchange for a day's pay. There was an understanding that if my job moves then I move with it. We became a transient peoples. We no longer were born at home, grew up there, remained in the town in which we were born, took a job at the mill or whatever, built or bought a house down the street from the one in which we were reared, married, had a family, and worked until we died.

When we became more and more socially mobile our horizons expanded. Men and ladies went off to war and returned with a different perspective of other peoples and countries and a thirst for spreading freedom to those peoples they had met and began to care for. They began to correspond with them and sometimes visited them or had them visit here. They began to appreciate their cultures and actually began wanting to share what it is we have.

Eventually, jets began to take us across the world for business and pleasure. Many of us took on a more global view of the world. We invested our money in other parts of the world and understood it made good common sense to want to both assert our interests and rights granted by those who invited our dollars. We also began to understand that America has interests around the world. And part of her interests were to live up to her proclaiming that all people are created equal by their Creator and that He ordained that they are to enjoy certain inalienable rights. We began to take on the responsibility of living that truth as well as giving it mere lip-service.

Hitler and Stalin presented America with great challenges to prove up or shut up. And prove up we have. Have we made an error in judgment from time to time? Doubtlessly, we have. But we've also exterminated deadly diseases throughout the world. We have fed untold numbers. We have created a thirst and a hunger for freedom and human rights. In my book, that's a pretty fair showing for a mutt of a peoples. We're proud, or at least at one time we were, to be a melting pot of all nations' peoples. A beacon to the world. A light shining into the darkest of caves and jungles. A hope for those yearning for freedom, liberty, and a government acknowlegment of rights and a bonus of a Constitutional guarantee to protect them.

Somehow, someway, somewhere there was a fog which descended upon our minds which caused us to believe that those whose creativity in starting and pampering like a newborn and growing a company owed its employees something much more than a day's pay for a day's work. I think that is truly sad. My parents didn't believe that. My grandparents didn't believe that. My greatgrandparents not only didn't believe it they never could have imangined it. And if they had they would have scoffed at it as just pure nonsense.

If every company in America were to suddenly move out of America what would really happen? Truthfully? We'll some would follow their jobs. Some would start up their own companies. Some would find a way to make a living they never ever before considered. Some might go back to the land and farm. Some might become craftsmen or artisans or even artists. From cottage industries around the nation would grow new businesses and companies. And perhaps those new business owners wouldn't look to government for contracts and handouts and protections against competition and all the other benefits companies demand. Also, perhaps those new owners would be wary of the government and its broken promises and regulations and make certain they never became victims of it as did those who picked up and moved elsewhere to escape it.

Would that be so very bad? I think not. Others will disagree. But the point remains that in the real world for every action there is a reaction.

I just thought one or more readers might appreciate my saying so. Thanks.

I can remember those days, bw.  People were content with what they had.   It is not that way anymore.

There used to be a JC plant here where I live.  They moved to Mexico about 8 years ago.  480 families in a town of about 7K at the time without an income.  But the town has grown to nearly double and I hardly recognize it anymore.

I attended a meeting not long ago where the movers and shakers were trying to convince whoever had to be convinced that we needed to have a 4-lane highway coming in here from every direction to attract industry.  Well, industry attracts people, and how long would it be before we double again in size.  Why do people move into a quiet God-fearing community and then try to change it into something like what they moved away from?

My comment at the meeting was "I would be content if we still came into town on a dirt road in a horse drawn buggy"

Since I'm very familiar with the manufacturing environment, the only good thing I find about OSHA is that it prevents some companies from putting their workers in harm's way out of indifference or caring more for the bottom line than they do safety.  I can remember when factories didn't care if their employees were working in extremely unsafe conditions.  Along comes OSHA and now we're at the other extreme.  They make it so costly for factories to operate and fine them such enormous fines that it's difficult to stay in business.  That's one of the reasons that so many factories leave.  People in factories of years ago had to learn to be safe because nobody was taking care of them.  Now, I see people do the dumbest things you can imagine.  Machines have been guarded and idiot proofed so much that they are nearly impossible to work around.  People have a false sense of security.  It looks like there could be a compromise so that workers would be safe without a place like OSHA leaching all the profits.

The good thing about my areas is that jobs are plentiful.  There are more jobs (good jobs) than there are people to do them.  Most of the businesses send their employees to school to learn new technology so that they can be competitive in the work force.  My company pays 100% of the tuition and fees for any class we take that benefits us in our work.  They have paid for three years of college for me.  I haven't paid a penny.  If one employer does leave it's no problem finding another good job.  I would love to figure out why it is that way in my area and not in others.  I think one reason is because we have very few union jobs.   Our cost of living is lower than in most states so we don't require as much to start with.  For example, I have a four bedroom house on 43 acres of land and a 20X30 metal equipment shed.  My property taxes are only $600 a YEAR.  We have no state income tax.

NAFTA should be rescinded. YellI guess the only way to rid the country of it is to sign petitions. "Slick Willy" Clinton got us into that one and even though the trade deficit is over 80 BILLION DOLLARS it continues to exist.Money mouth Ammo up. If all legal means fail We may have to literally "fight for our country."Frown  CFTA has a trade deficit of over ONE TRILLION DOLLARS. "Willy Jeff" got us into that one and China is now going to have control of a port in Texas and is pumping millions into making it ready for it's exports that MEXICAN TRUCKERS will deliver deep into America via the NFTA  Superhighway.Yell When are forefathers were disgusted with their government they faught  for what they believed to be right.Surprised Does history, once again, repeat itself? I'd venture to say "Not only will it repeat itself, it may scream out loudly."Cry If not, get ready for the New World Order and The North American Union. Pizza for pesos? What's next, franks for francs?Money mouth Better learn Spanish and French. Amsterdam, Ireland and Costa Rica are looking better and better each day.

Melinda in TN

I have tried to get my husband to move there forever.  He works for a trucking company out of Nashville.  Star Transportation.

We live in Indiana and our property taxes are going through the roof.

People are protesting like crazy.  We live in a 3 bdrm house on 10 acres on a gravel road and we pay $1500 a year.  They actually tax people on property for what the value would be if the home  was remodeled.  If that is not crazy I do not know what is.   Who says it will ever be remodedled???

We have Lugar and Bayh for leaders need I say more.  Our Governor Mitch pushed the NAFTA highway.  We are in big trouble here.  They call downtown Indianapolis, Little Mexico.  Glad we dont live there anymore.

Several years ago I heard a statistic that over 50% of all employment in this country is now governmental in some form such as municipal, state, or federal. I would bet that those statistics are even higher now. Mom and pop shops have disappeared, start ups are fewer and fewer, and even agriculture has given way to massive conglomerates and gentleman farmers are a thing of the past. So, you are either indpendently wealthy already, are at risk of being outsourced, or you work for a government agency. I seem to remember Ross Perot's prediction of a giant sucking sound when NAFTA came into being. Oh well, we are becoming a global community.

The OSHA crap and Environmental regulations are so far out of control that it is ridiculous.  Add to that the wonderful trade agreements our idiot government has negotiated wherein American goods are tariffed all over the world but foreign goods coming in to this country are not, and it is a wonder that we have any businesses left at all. Over grown beaurocracies write illegal rules at will and the corrupt courts enforce them.

Let's face it folks, our government has totally gone over to the dark side. They have been working toward reducing the standard of living in America while improving it elsewhere for a good twenty years.  We are presently living and eating on faith in a worthless fiat currency that can be brought down at the whim of the international community.  We are importing more and more of our food while paying our farmers not to raise crops.  This idiocy of using corn for fuel (it pollutes more than gasoline) will drive the price of American grown beef, pork, chicken and dairy products out of sight as the price of livestock feed triples or quadruples.

I love this great land and I see my country, my heritage, my future and the future of the children being stolen by politicians who are corrupt, lazy or just plain stupid, by paid beaurocrats who are completely out of control and by a lying, corrupt news media who can report on some sleezy singer getting her hair colored but cannot see fit to mention the SPP! If the Republicans win the next election, this will continue.  If the Democrats win the next election, this will continue faster.  We do not have much time to awaken our friends and neighbors and their friends and neighbors if we want to save this country.  There are a handful of candidates who might make a difference, if we can just get one of them elected.

Sub-Sonic, I live between Chattanooga and Knoxville, closer to Chattanooga, and the county where I work goes out of their way to attract manufacturing businesses.  Our sales tax is high because our silly former Republican governor had a hissy fit because we wouldn't allow an income tax.  I voted for Bredesen and that is the first time I've voted Democrat in a very long time.  So far he's done a good job.  Now if he will just crack down on illegals......

No.  It has nothing whatsoever to do with government regulations here and everything to do with wages there.  They could have regulations out the wazoo and they'd still get our factories if all they have to pay per hour is 50cents.

Apparently you are not well versed in the operations of OSHA and the federal government controlling every aspect of you processes, maybe you should go pick up a copy of the osha regulations and by the way it covers everything from how to operate a crank pencil sharpener to a nuclear reactor. Oh by the way take a big truck with you when you go as it will take it to haul all the books back.

One thing I wish would happen that I know wont because our leaders are sooooo greedy, is when a company moves out of the country to get cheeper labor, they are either charged much more to bring goods back here or barred completely from bringing goods back here. We need to stop rewarding people for being globalist and anti american.
